Mozart: Concerto pour clarinette et orchestre, K. 622 - Quintette pour clarinette et cordes, K.581

Patrick Messina

Classical - Released October 26, 2012 | Classique Radio France

French clarinetist Patrick Messina, principal clarinetist of the Orchestre National de France, has been heavily talked up by Yehudi Menuhin and others, and this 2012 release of Mozart's clarinet evergreens should thus find a large audience of listeners eager to sample his work. The results are mixed, but they show that the hype is at least potentially justified. The less successful of the two works on the program is, oddly, the one with another marquee name. Conductor Riccardo Muti leads Messina and the Orchestre National in the Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622. Muti is not really a Mozartian, and here he's rather uncomfortable; leaving aside the needlessly puffed-up orchestral tutti in the finale, he doesn't coordinate well with Messina, and the two seem unable to agree on just how hard to push their unusually fast tempos. There's nothing to make you pick this recording from among the dozens of other versions of this concerto out there, but the situation changes with the Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581, where Messina is joined by the Philharmonia Quartet of Berlin. This is an altogether tighter performance, and here you can see what the fuss is about with Messina: his uncanny quiet in the theme of the slow movement, for instance, will linger in the mind long after the performance is finished. Radio France's live sound is impressively clear, and in general, although imperfect, this album announces the arrival of a major clarinet talent. © TiVo

Mozart: Quintette avec clarinette K 581 & Quatuors K 380 & K 378

Florent Héau

Classical - Released August 12, 2007 | Alpha Classics

Booklet
The quality of Mozart's contributions to the clarinet literature (in the clarinet quintet and concerto) has been equaled by few and perhaps surpassed by none. This is surprising given the relative obscurity and technical immaturity of the instrument in Mozart's time. This album of the Quatuor Manfred with clarinetist Florent Heau opens with the K. 581 Clarinet Quintet. Their approach to Mozart has a decidedly Romantic leaning, although it is never overdone or distasteful. Articulation is typically quite legato, particularly in the first movement where just a little separation and lift from the string might be welcome. Heau's sound is quite pleasing throughout, with a very cantabile, elegant tone and complete control over the instrument's dynamic range. The album continues with two transcriptions of the Violin Sonatas, K. 378, and K. 380 for clarinet, violin, viola, and cello. While historically the authorship of these transcriptions is unknown, it is abundantly clear that it was not Mozart himself. The division of the piano part amongst the string players is sometimes quite sloppy and awkward and results in several balance problems. The ensemble makes a valiant effort in its performance of these two transcriptions, but does not come close to the elegance and balanced harmony heard in the K. 581 Quintet.© TiVo

Mozart : Concerto pour clarinette K. 622 & Quintette pour Clarinette K. 581

Andrew Marriner

Chamber Music - Released November 1, 2004 | PentaTone

Hi-Res Booklet
The pairing here of Mozart's inspired Clarinet Concerto, K. 622, and his sublime Clarinet Quintet, K. 581, is not surprising, nor is the collaboration of conductor Sir Neville Marriner and his son, clarinetist Andrew Marriner, unusual, since both musicians have a natural affinity for this composer. The 2004 release of this album on the occasion of their birthdays -- the father's 80th, the son's 50th -- is attention-getting and perhaps charming, but their celebrations hardly provide a reason to choose this disc over others of comparable musical value. The refined playing of Marriner fils and the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields is consistent and satisfactory, and fully meets expectations; this is what counts most. Ultimately, though, the benefits of DSD recording and 5.0 multichannel playback are this package's most obvious attractions, and audiophiles who already appreciate these masterpieces and the performers will enjoy this recording for its remarkably clean and spacious sound. In short, there is nothing objectionable about this hybrid SACD, except for PentaTone's claim that it is playable on standard CD equipment. It may work on some models -- in stereo only -- but older players may reject it because of its large store of data. So, with that one caveat, listeners may place their confidence in this solid recording.© TiVo

Mozart: Clarinet Concerto, K.622 & Clarinet Quintet, K.581

Sharon Kam

Classical - Released September 13, 2011 | Berlin Classics

Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or
Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622, and Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581, are masterpieces of the period at the end of his life, and they've been recorded hundreds if not thousands of times. To come up with a standout recording at this point, and indeed without doing anything radical, is quite an accomplishment, but that's what Israeli-German violinist Sharon Kam does here. These performances can be classified with those that use modern instruments but show a distinct influence from historical performance practices; the Austrian-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonic is a small group designed for the dimensions of Haydn's work spaces at Esterházy castle, and Kam uses a basset clarinet (a modern one), with the somewhat extended range of the instrument for which Mozart wrote the two works. The result is an unusually agile accompaniment in the concerto, where Kam as both director and clarinetist can coordinate small details in cadences with surprising precision. But the real star is Kam herself, a truly extraordinary Mozart player. The slow movements seem to soar with a sustained energy that very few players of the modern era have matched, and the outer movements are lively in a way that comes only from total mastery to which something personal is added. Kam's control over the overall structure is equally accurate in the concerto and in the quintet, very different performance situations, and there's just not a moment when the music isn't precisely in place. Yet it's alive throughout. The album's design concept, with Kam dressed up in 18th-century finery, would seem pretentious were it not for the fact that her playing is so beautiful she seems to have stepped right out of Mozart's world. The recording was made in two sessions in different locations; the acoustic of the Beethovensaal at the Hannover Congress Centrum, where the Clarinet Quintet was recorded, is superior for Mozart to that of the Paterskirche in Kempen, a clear enough but somewhat dull-sounding venue.© TiVo

Mozart & Widmann: Clarinet Quintets

Jörg Widmann

Classical - Released March 17, 2023 | Myrios Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
Clarinetist Jörg Widmann has recorded Mozart's Clarinet Quintet in A major, K. 581, in the past, and in part, this 2024 release seems to have been occasioned by his completion of his own Clarinet Quintet, commissioned by the Hagen Quartett and heard here. He pondered the work for some ten years, at one point giving up because, he said, he knew he could write a work for clarinet and strings, but he couldn't write a clarinet quintet. When he returned to the work, he succeeded in creating a 38-minute single-movement work that has a genuine dialogue between the clarinet and the string quartet. Sample the opening pages, where the strings sound a variety of percussive sounds, over which the clarinet adds long arches. It is certainly a work that requires close concentration, but it will reward that. Widmann's work aside, the Mozart Clarinet Quintet in A major here receives an extraordinary performance that is perhaps stimulated by Widmann's attempt to swing for the fences with his own work. He uses little vibrato and coaxes a similar sound from the string quartet, resulting in a performance that adds some tension to the autumnal languid mood most often heard in the work. Myrios Classics' sound from a Bremen Radio studio is excellent, and this recording will be a powerful experience even for those not in the market for a 40-minute contemporary chamber work.© James Manheim /TiVo

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason
After "Waiting for Clara", which focused on the music of Brahms and Schumann, this second album on NoMadMusic from the clarinetist Julien Hervé looks back another few years, to the apex of Classical style, with Mozart’s Quintet and Concerto. After discovering the instrument later in his life, Mozart fell entirely in love with it and dedicated these sublime pieces to it. This hedonistic, luminous programme, recorded live, offers us the opportunity to discover - or rediscover - two of the greatest masterpieces in the clarinet repertoire. © NoMadmusic
