Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 22, K. 482 & No.23, K. 488

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet

Concertos - Released April 1, 2022 | Chandos

Hi-Res
Described by BBC Music Magazine as "Mozart music-making of altogether superior quality", Jean-Efflam Bavouzet’s acclaimed Mozart Concertos series reaches Vol. 6. Along with Concerto No. 24, K. 491, the two concertos presented here were composed in Vienna in the winter of 1785-1786, at a time when Mozart was working on Le nozze di Figaro. He was at the height of his fame as composer, virtuoso pianist, and teacher. These three concertos were all written for his own use in the concerts of that winter, and remained unpublished during his lifetime. Der Schauspieldirektor was commissioned by Emperor Joseph II for an important state visit and performed at Schönbrunn palace on 7 February 1786. The Overture highlights Mozart’s innate ability as an orchestrator, and serves as a demonstration piece for Gábor Takács-Nagy and the wonderful musicians of Manchester Camerata. © Chandos

Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 20, K. 466; Piano Sonatas, K. 281 & 332

Seong-Jin Cho

Classical - Released November 16, 2018 | Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Hi-Res Booklet
After winning the First Prize at the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition, Korean pianist Seong-Jin Cho (born in 1994) embarked on a bright global career that has already taken him absolutely everywhere! Following his first three albums, with two devoted to Chopin (obviously…), a third to Debussy (slightly more unusual), he now dives into Mozart, in particular the Concerto in D minor that has already earned him a Third Prize at the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition. In fact, the pianist explains how Mozart was his favourite as a child, and proves it with great finesse in this recording. In accompanied Yannick Nézet-Séguin – a master at accompaniment for opera and concerts – Cho has found an excellent partner. It is worth noting the pianist has opted for the cadences composed by Beethoven. His album also features two Mozart sonatas, both in major keys strongly contrasting with the dark and theatrical concerto. Once again the pianist puts emphasis on clarity and the sung line, rather than sheer virtuosity – however, virtuosity is still apparent despite Mozart’s sonatas not exactly being monsters of fingering mechanics. The album ends withFantasia No. 3 in D minor, one of his most famous pieces even though it is only a fragment of a movement (it was either unfinished or the ending was lost). The ten concluding measures were added by an editor. © SM/Qobuz

Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 22 & 24

Charles Richard-Hamelin

Classical - Released January 31, 2020 | Groupe Analekta, Inc

Hi-Res Booklet
Jonathan Cohen and Les Violons du Roy team up with Charles Richard-Hamelin for their first Mozart recording together on Analekta, delivering warm and polished performances of the Piano Concerto No. 22 in E flat, K. 482, and the Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, K. 491, both among the most popular in Mozart's catalog. One may be forgiven for thinking this is a full-on period-style performance, because of the ensemble's long connection with early music, particularly 17th and 18th century opera, though what period traits the music may reveal is subtle, primarily in the vibrato-less strings and the group's chamber forces. Yet between their rich sound and Richard-Hamelin's piano -- not a fortepiano -- the sound is as satisfying as any modern-style or historical practice fans could desire. The recording may account for this effect, making Les Violons du Roy feel twice as large as its small numbers might suggest. Richard-Hamelin's playing is bright and prominent, and a certain Chopinesque quality in his execution, especially in the slow movements, also adds to this "slightly-later" period sound. Listeners will have to decide for themselves what they think about the audio quality, but as far as interpretation goes, the album is a delight from beginning to end.© TiVo

Mozart: Piano Concerto No..18, K.456 & No.19, K.459

Mitsuko Uchida

Classical - Released January 1, 1989 | Decca Music Group Ltd.

Hi-Res Booklet
Pianist Mitsuko Uchida has long been one of the world's great Mozart specialists, and she has already recorded a complete cycle of the composer's piano concertos. Now she returns to them, with herself as conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra. This group's characteristically dry, agile string work was forged by the great George Szell and has survived down to the present day, and it fits Uchida's aims very nicely. Her world of grace, subtle phrasing, and uncannily precise trills and ornaments is not so different from what her established fans will be used to, but the intricate, lively dialogue she forges with the orchestra is something new. The Piano Concerto No. 18 in B flat major, K. 456, with all the little humorous fillips in the orchestra that seem to be forgotten only to sneak back into the piano part later, is magical. The Piano Concerto No. 19 in F major, K. 459, with its structure built up out of open fifths, is a bit less well suited to Uchida's treatment, which doesn't fully exploit the Beethovenian qualities of the opening movement. But there are many good details, and the madcap fun of the finale comes through. A must for Uchida fans, and a strong pair of Mozart concertos for everyone else.© TiVo
