From A Room: Volume 2

Chris Stapleton

Country - Released December 1, 2017 | Mercury Nashville

Hi-Res
His album Traveller was one of the best country discs of 2015. Over the years, Chris Stapleton has written for the the whole of Nashville (but not only Nashville!), signing hit after hit for Kenny Chesney, George Strait, Adele, Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw and Brad Paisley, and co-writing with Vince Gill, Peter Frampton and Sheryl Crow. The native of Kentucky no longer has much to prove in terms of his songwriting ability… However, getting behind the mic was a different matter: his first solo album which he has record at the age of 37 had to be up to scratch. And it was. Sure, between 2008 and 2010 Stapleton had been at the helm of the SteelDrivers, a decent bluegrass group, but this time it was time for him to write his own record - under his name and no one else's… Traveller proved that Chris Stapleton possessed a truly gifted voice. From the ballads to the considerably more up-tempo tracks, he suited his songs from head to toe, sometimes even adding a touch of southern soul… Two years down the line, the songwriter is back with a superb follow-up: a contemporary country work that preserves tradition while remaining firmly in the present. After a flawless first volume in May 2017 (From A Room: Volume 1), the second volume has been released this December (From A Room: Volume 2)! Recorded in the lair of the famous RCA Studio A in Nashville where Elvis, Waylon Jennings and other legends hung out last century, this record brings out a more rootsy side from its author. Stapleton still sings divinely well, bawling like a wounded wolf when necessary, playing the southern soul lover if needs be, and rolling out small touches of sticky blues. In short, the bearded-man from Lexington slaloms perfectly between the very personal and the more commercial, and at the end of his winding road he has arrived at a record that is every bit as good as volume 1. © MD/Qobuz

Live from Madison Square Garden

Eric Clapton

Rock - Released May 19, 2009 | Bushbranch - Surfdog Records

Eric Clapton's new millennium has largely been defined by collaborations with friends, beginning with a duet album with B.B. King following through with a Cream reunion and closing with tours with his former Blind Faith running mate, Steve Winwood. Clapton and Winwood did three concerts together at Madison Square Garden in February 2008 and the results were fruitful enough to spawn this double-disc album -- along with its accompanying DVD set -- and a moderately scaled 2009 tour. Live from Madison Square Garden culls 21 highlights from those three nights and spreads them over two discs, sequencing the songs so Traffic numbers alternate with selections from Blind Faith, Derek & the Dominos, blues standards, a handful of Clapton's hits, and a heavy dose of Hendrix, who has no less than three songs here. That extended salute to Jimi is a good indication of the vibe here -- this is a genuine shared co-billing with Clapton and Winwood trading vocals and solos almost equally. There's not much ego here and not much hunger, either, with the two stars sliding into a relaxed groove that yields plenty of rewards. There's a comfortable touch to their playing that's greatly appealing, and the straightforward setting places the spotlight directly on their interplay. Clapton and Winwood might roll easy but they can still create some sparks, sometimes in unexpected places, such as the somewhat forgotten '80s hits "Forever Man" and "Split Decision," both which are highlights here. Ultimately, this isn't an album of moments, but rather a sustained whole that finds Clapton and Winwood egging each other on to produce a wholly satisfying, if not quite surprising, reunion.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

The Papas & The Mamas

The Mamas & The Papas

Pop - Released January 1, 1968 | Geffen

An often misunderstood album, this album (aside from the 1971 "reunion" album) was the final record by the Mamas & the Papas. It has held up incredibly well over time, and sounds better today than when it was released in mid-1968. The centerpiece of the album is "Dream a Little Dream," which very well may be the finest cover version that the group ever recorded, and in the end, was a very nice way to end the group's short but incredible career. The album also contains some excellent John Phillips material such as "12:30" (a minor hit), "Rooms," and "Too Late." These three tracks form a mini-medley in the middle of the second side, and add a lot of dimension to the record. Cut at the Phillips' home studio, the album has a simple sound, but when the vocal majesty cuts through on such tracks as "Mansions" (one of the band's lost masterpieces), it's faultless. © Matthew Greenwald /TiVo

Don Ray - Garden Of Love

Cerrone

Disco - Released October 27, 2014 | Malligator Préférence

Hi-Res
This one-off disco outing was recorded by Don Ray, an arranger who is best known for his work with disco maestros like Alec Costandinos and Cerrone (who produced this outing and also co-wrote many of the songs). It is a slick, ornate slab of Eurodisco that infuses its ornate orchestrations and pulsating rhythms with a layer of Kraftwerk-style programmed synthesizers. Garden Of Love is best known for the two club classics it produced: "Got To Have Loving" is a relentless dance track that alternates pounding rhythms with staccato bursts of horns and tribal drum breaks straight off a glam rock record while "Standing In The Rain" is a hypnotic midtempo track that pushes the programmed synthesizers to the forefront and effectively contrasts a horn-laden chorus with ethereal synthesizer-dominated instrumental breaks. Both songs got extensive exposure in discos at the time and remain cult favorites among disco fans today. Beyond those tracks, Garden Of Love is a mixed bag: everything is suitably slick and well-performed but the songs lack memorable melodies and hooks. For instance, "Midnight Madness" takes a chant and runs it into the ground for nearly six minutes. Other songs just feel like the loose-limbed jams with overdubbed solos from the session musicians ("Body And Soul" and the title track). The record's nadir is the finale "My Desire," an overlong torch song with a self-conscious "lounge lizard" vocal that is too campy to be taken seriously. The professionalism of Garden Of Love may satisfy Eurodisco completists but casual dance music fans will be better off picking up this album's classics on a disco compilation.© Donald A. Lukas Geniušas

Classical - Released September 24, 2021 | Mirare

Hi-Res Booklet
A Russian rural scene narrated by a bard, characters from traditional Hungarian songs, folk tunes from Bucovina with enigmatic titles and melodies - this summarizes the musical journey proposed here by Russian-Lithuanian pianist Lukas Geniušas. These scores are inspired by Central and Eastern European folklore and embody the junction of two musical art forms that have been in constant dialogue over the centuries. Tchaikovsky’s Dumka (inspired by traditional Ukrainian or Polish ballads with a mournful tone) is encapsulating the album’s character. © Mirare

Midnight in the Garden

Lily Kershaw

Pop - Released September 24, 2013 | Nettwerk Music Group

Midnight in the Garden is the debut album by folk-pop singer/songwriter and Los Angeles native Lily Kershaw. Produced by pop veteran John Fields (Jonas Brothers, P!nk, Andrew W.K.) and released in late 2013 on Nettwerk Records, Midnight dials in on Kershaw's smooth, sultry vocals and quietly fingerpicked guitar. Warm, moody, and introspective, the 13-song set features the single "As It Seems," which garnered the singer some attention when it appeared on CBS's hit show Criminal Minds.© Timothy Monger /TiVo
