Mendelssohn: Songs without Words Vol.1 (Lieder ohne Worte)

Peter Donohoe

Classical - Released January 7, 2022 | Chandos

Hi-Res Booklet
Peter Donohoe CBE is acclaimed as one of the foremost pianists of our time, for his musicianship, stylistic versatility, and commanding technique. On this first volume of Mendelssohn’s Songs without Words, he writes: "When I first became conscious of my desire to be a musician, Mendelssohn meant more to me, personally, than almost any other composer – he certainly ranked alongside Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. My choice of programme for the present recording is based around a large selection from the Lieder ohne Worte, which I preface with the Rondo capriccioso, Op. 14 and the three wonderful Fantaisies ou Caprices. The Rondo capriccioso and Trois Fantaisies ou Caprices are exquisite examples of the extraordinary facility of Mendelssohn (implicitly as a pianist, but also as a composer), of his originality and inspiration, at an age that allows us, in my view, to place him in the same group of wonderfully natural and prodigious composers as Haydn and Mozart. It is always a pleasure to play these works, and they go to the heart of why I became a musician in the first place". © Chandos

Le Concert des Oiseaux. Vincent Bouchot: Le Carnaval des animaux en péril

La Rêveuse

Classical - Released February 10, 2023 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
Several famous pieces of music based on birdsong appeared in the 19th and 20th centuries; those by Saint-Saëns, Britten, and Ravel are here, although Messiaen is not. However, the affinity between music and birdsong had been explored for centuries before that, and the early music group La Rêveuse here provides some delightful examples. The always pictorial François Couperin is represented, as is Rameau, but other composers are less familiar but no less charming. Sample the works by Theodor Schwartzkopff, Michel Blavet, and especially Michel Pignolet de Montéclair (1667-1737), whose "Les Ramages" ("The Songs") names a group of birds and then illustrates their songs. Then there are historical-instrument versions of Saint-Saëns, Britten, and Ravel. One may accept this idea or not, but even in the latter case, they don't do much to dent the charm of the whole. The program ends with a work by contemporary composer Vincent Bouchot, Le Carnaval des animaux en péril, a kind of a take-off on Saint-Saëns for the Anthropocene era that also calls forth a striking variety of instruments from La Rêveuse. Another questionable idea is that, in keeping with the practices of this group, recorded birdsong is heard between some of the tracks. Whatever aspects of this release might be doubtful, it rarely fails to bring a smile. © James Manheim /TiVo

Fauré: Intégrale de l'œuvre pour piano, Vol. 1 (Ballade, Mazurka op.62, Quatre Valses-Caprices, Préludes Op.103

Jean-Claude Pennetier

Classical - Released May 12, 2009 | Mirare

Booklet
Though Fauré was assuredly his own man as a composer, in these performances of his piano music by Jean-Claude Pennetier, he is also surely the rightful heir of Chopin. The formal matter here is clearly Chopin's -- a ballade, a mazurka, four waltzes, and nine preludes -- and the stylistic manner is Chopin's as well -- the filigree and melody in the right hand and the left hand divided between counter-melody, chordal accompaniment and bass. This is meant as no slight to either Fauré or Pennetier. This is luscious music with toothsome melodies, succulent sonorities, and mouthwatering forms, and if these can be faulted for being too beautiful, it's a fault they should bear proudly. The performances are likewise exquisite. Pennetier has a fluent technique, a pearly tone, and an elegant way of phrasing a melody and shaping a form. But more than that, Pennetier has a real sympathy for Fauré's music and his interpretations are honest and heartfelt. Though the classic performances of these works are certainly worthy of admiration and love, Pennetier's are no less admirable and loveable and any listener interested in the composer or the period is urged to try this disc. Mirare's digital sound is clear, deep, and immediate. © TiVo
