Le Concert des Oiseaux. Vincent Bouchot: Le Carnaval des animaux en péril

La Rêveuse

Classical - Released February 10, 2023 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
Several famous pieces of music based on birdsong appeared in the 19th and 20th centuries; those by Saint-Saëns, Britten, and Ravel are here, although Messiaen is not. However, the affinity between music and birdsong had been explored for centuries before that, and the early music group La Rêveuse here provides some delightful examples. The always pictorial François Couperin is represented, as is Rameau, but other composers are less familiar but no less charming. Sample the works by Theodor Schwartzkopff, Michel Blavet, and especially Michel Pignolet de Montéclair (1667-1737), whose "Les Ramages" ("The Songs") names a group of birds and then illustrates their songs. Then there are historical-instrument versions of Saint-Saëns, Britten, and Ravel. One may accept this idea or not, but even in the latter case, they don't do much to dent the charm of the whole. The program ends with a work by contemporary composer Vincent Bouchot, Le Carnaval des animaux en péril, a kind of a take-off on Saint-Saëns for the Anthropocene era that also calls forth a striking variety of instruments from La Rêveuse. Another questionable idea is that, in keeping with the practices of this group, recorded birdsong is heard between some of the tracks. Whatever aspects of this release might be doubtful, it rarely fails to bring a smile. © James Manheim /TiVo

Mythes

James Ehnes

Chamber Music - Released May 26, 2023 | Onyx Classics

Hi-Res
Although this album was released in 2023, the music was all recorded in 2015 and 2016 in multiple locations (both sonically sharp), and there are even separate annotators for each piece or group of pieces. There is an unusually long list of encores at the end. The project has the flavor of cleaning out items from the storeroom, and at 50 minutes plus, it is a bit skimpy. This said, Ehnes is a marvelous violinist; there is never a weak spot in his playing, and individual numbers here are worth the listener's time. Primary among them is the title work by Karol Szymanowski, as Impressionist as the composer ever got, but no Debussy knock-off; both Prokofiev and Bartók admired this work, and it is a bit neglected. Each of its three tone poems depicts a Greek myth. It is filled with technical challenges, including quarter tones in the third movement, which Ehnes dispatches with his usual aplomb. The encores are quite a mixed bag, ranging from Tchaikovsky to a James Newton Howard piece composed for an all-encores project by Hilary Hahn; Ehnes' Flight of the Bumblebee is as crisply done as it has ever been, and there are some slightly disused works that will bring a smile, including the Sicilienne once attributed to Maria Theresia von Paradis and performed at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Nothing here is essential, with the possible exception of the title work, but Ehnes fans will find him in excellent form.© James Manheim /TiVo

Haydn : L'Impatiente

Julien Chauvin

Classical - Released October 4, 2019 | Aparté

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason
The Haydn series continues with the Paris Symphony No. 87. Julien Chauvin and his orchestra keep shaking us up with historical instruments listening to Haydn’s works and several other forgotten scores from the same period. All of them were commissioned for the Concert de la Loge Olympique - ancestor and model for Julien Chauvin and his musicians – and all of them sank into oblivion during the 19th century, except for Haydn’s symphonies. The record offers an opportunity to experience some rare works of Grétry, Lemoyne and Ragué, and to revive the success that they once knew. © Aparté
