Me And Mrs. Jones: The Best Of Billy Paul

Billy Paul

Soul/Funk/R&B - Released April 6, 1999 | Epic - Associated - Legacy

Too easily dismissed as little more than a one-hit wonder, Billy Paul was, in fact, one of the most gifted and affecting talents to grace the Philadelphia International stable -- the recipient of some of the Gamble & Huff team's most lush and sophisticated productions. His deeply soulful voice bridged the gap between jazz and soul, textured in equal measure by street-smart swagger and touching vulnerability. Me and Mrs. Jones: The Best of Billy Paul goes far beyond the classic title track in restoring the singer to prominence, showcasing his versatility via superb covers of pop favorites, including Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," Elton John's "Your Song," and Paul McCartney's "Let 'Em In." With the inclusion of R&B chart hits like "Thanks for Saving My Life" and "Billy's Back Home," it all adds up to a definitive portrait of Paul in his prime.© Jason Ankeny /TiVo

Keep the Village Alive (Deluxe)

Stereophonics

Alternative & Indie - Released September 11, 2015 | Ignition Records Ltd

Hi-Res
One of the chief calling-cards of the Welsh rock band Stereophonics is their ongoing fidelity to their original sound. Since the group’s inception in 1997, Kelly Jones and co have stuck to a recipe that really works, placing a strong guitar attack, pop melodies and Jones’s gravelly voice at the heart of their music. Their ninth album, Keep The Village Alive, is no exception to this rule, and the songs the quartet deliver here are all hallmarks of the sound that has made Stereophonics one of the most popular rock bands of recent times. The new album was recorded in a small house in West London, where the Welsh band holed up for a few months to concentrate on songcraft, and to give free rein to the creativity of chief songwriter Kelly Jones. The bandleader co-produced the disc, alongside his sidekick Jim Lowe, and each of the tracks on the record betrays the energy and enthusiasm that we have come, by now, to associate with Stereophonics. Keep The Village Alive is an ideal weapon to conquer the charts with.

360 Degrees of Billy Paul (Expanded Edition)

Billy Paul

R&B - Released October 25, 1972 | Epic - Legacy

Paul's first album for Philadelphia International was straight club jazz; sales were slow. This time, Gamble & Huff gave Paul material strong enough to make his sophomore release a viable commercial entity. "Brown Baby's" speaks of people of color making their parents and others proud. "I'm Just a Prisoner" is real, but would have been better served without the string section. It's a stark depiction about a man who has served five years and is contemplating his future. It is about the unsettling fact that he's just a prisoner. Its chilling chorus tells it all -- "The cell is cold as hell, you'll never get use to the smell, my bed is hard as wood, I got to fight to keep my manhood," the riveting saga doesn't just end, the fade is lengthy, and features a dejected Paul woefully mourning the conditions, the situation, and the turmoil of prison life. He sounds believable and frustrated belting out "Me & Mrs. Jones," a classic that many relate to, and those who don't have no problem being down with the passionate singing and clawing lyrics describing the unapologetic infidelity. His "It's Too Late" is a fine rendition of Carole King's classic. You might not recognize "Let's Stay Together," popularized by Al Green. Paul does it it MOR/Jazz style, with a lot of improvising before crooning the original lyrics. It shows versatility, but it's unlikely that people who bought Green's "Jones" appreciated it. A version of Elton John's "Your Song" introduced the Brit to fans of soul music. Vince Montana's magical vibes punctuate the rhythm, which turns into a lightweight gospel revival. "Am I Black Enough for You" fit in with the times of overt black consciousness, a social message moved along by a perky bongo and clavinet-dominated beat, and well-spaced, brassy horn hits. A too staid "I'm Gonna Make It This Time," co-written by Bunny Sigler, marked Paul's second adventure in urban club jazz on 360 Degrees; this one has bite, and Billy sings it with fire.© Andrew Hamilton /TiVo

Our Kind of Soul

Hall & Oates

Pop - Released February 14, 2021 | BMG Rights Management (UK) Ltd

Hi-Res
Considering that soul has been at the foundation of Hall & Oates' sound throughout their career -- even their early folk-rock records had soulful underpinnings -- it only made sense for the duo to eventually cut their own soul tribute album. As the title suggests, that's exactly what 2004's Our Kind of Soul is: Hall & Oates' spin on their favorite soul sounds. This includes, of course, heavy doses of Philly soul and Motown, along with other smooth soul of the '70s. Most of the album is devoted to covers -- usually familiar tunes like "Standing in the Shadows of Love," "I'll Be Around," and "Used to Be My Girl" -- yet there are a couple of more obscure entries and a heavily rewritten "I Can Dream About You" (in his excellent track-by-track liner notes, Daryl Hall reveals that Dan Hartman wrote the song with the duo in mind), but there is a handful of originals that fit into the vibe quite well, such as the lush "Soul Violins" and "Let Love Take Control." All the songs, whether they're covers or originals, are given a clean yet warm production similar to the pair's successful 2003 comeback effort, Do It for Love, but this is a little more laid-back and unassuming. Consequently, it doesn't make as big of an impression, but it's a friendly, mellow affair that finds Hall & Oates in good form. It's not quite as strong as Do It for Love, and its tasteful, relaxed vibe may strike some fans of their '80s hits as being a little sleepy, but for longtime fans who like the folky Atlantic material as much as their blue-eyed soul, this is a nice, enjoyable listen.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden

Michael Bublé

Pop - Released June 12, 2009 | 143 - Reprise

Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden finds Canadian crooner Bublé making a highly anticipated appearance at the storied New York City concert venue. Often seen as a symbolic moment for a performer having achieved a high level of populist success, Madison Square Garden performances have led to a few well-known live albums, including one from Bublé's own most notable influence, Frank Sinatra. Interestingly, while Sinatra's 1974 album The Main Event came toward the latter half of his career, Bublé's appeared right as some critics and even his contemporaries like smooth jazz trumpeter Chris Botti were proclaiming his ascension to Sinatra's throne as the best traditional pop vocalist of his generation. Setting such grandiose summations aside, Bublé is at the very least an incredibly talented vocalist who grew from a nice kid singer in the early part of the decade to a truly swinging interpreter of the Great American Songbook canon by the end of the decade. Furthermore, Bublé found the right modern pop/soul songs -- often co-written by himself ("Lost," "Home") -- which has worked to fully contemporize his likable and swaggering stage persona, all of which is readily apparent on Meets Madison Square Garden. Backed here by his de rigueur big band, Bublé has a joyful and abundantly devilish rapport with the audience and is clearly as in love with them as they are with him. Not surprisingly, there was some buzz surrounding Bublé's Madison Square Garden concert, which marked not only his first appearance at the Garden, but also his return visit to the famous Blue Note jazz club where he made his original N.Y.C. debut. Included with the CD of Michael Bublé Meets Madison Square Garden is a DVD documentary detailing this return visit as well as the behind-the-scenes buildup and performance of his Madison Square Garden concert.© Matt Collar /TiVo

Me And Mrs. Jones

The Dramatics

R&B - Released January 1, 1987 | Geffen

MCA Special Products' Me & Mrs. Jones is a haphazard sampling of singles and album tracks from the Dramatics' recordings for ABC. There are a few hits here -- the live version of the title track, "Be My Girl," "Shake It Well," "You're Fooling You," "(I'm Going By) the Stars in Your Eyes" -- but they're balanced by album tracks. Ultimately, the collection is a little uneven, but it is entertaining and may be worth the time and money of budget-minded casual fans.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo
