Fleur De Paris

Maurice Chevalier

Pop - Released March 5, 2010 | Parlophone (France)

Though Maurice Chevalier was better known as an actor than as a vocalist, he remains one of the most good-natured singers of the 20th century and fully earned his status as a cabaret archetype. Fleur de Paris is an album of tracks recorded by Chevalier between 1939 and 1948, and it includes some real gems -- "Appelez Ca Comme Vous Voulez," "Notre Espoir," the pleasantly jingoistic "Ca Sent Si Bon la France" -- these are period pieces that evoke an endlessly romanticized era in the history of French popular culture. Chevalier was not the most polished singer in the world, but his irrepressible good humor and dramatic, over-the-top delivery endeared him to a generation. That said, dramatic, over-the-top French pop music isn't for everyone, and those with a low Edith Piaf threshold may have trouble warming up to Chevalier. If you like the material but would prefer a more cultivated voice, try the Charles Trenet collection that was released by Angel at the same time (Anthologie, 8 31393 2).© Rick Anderson /TiVo

His 80th Birthday

Maurice Chevalier

Pop - Released December 7, 2018 | Epic - Legacy

Hi-Res
Maurice Chevalier's last studio album À 80 berges, released in 1967 on CBS, focuses on his hits, including medleys in English and French. The following year, in October 1968, Maurice Chevalier bid farewell to the stage at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, during twenty sold-out evenings entitled "80 berges". He declared at the end of the last concert: "I never got, anywhere, what the most dazzling Paris that filled the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées awarded me that evening". Maurice Chevalier lacked neither experience nor talent — few artists have had as much as he did. An international singing star during his lifetime and a recognised actor in Hollywood, always remained at the height of his popularity, he did not experience fits and starts during his career and continues, even today, to be one of the best known French singers in the world. His unique style and so recognizable voice make him a major cultural heritage artist. (Qobuz / GG)

Maurice & Marie-Madeleine Chevalier Duruflé

Maurice Duruflé

Classical - Released September 21, 1999 | Gothic

Booklet
The installation of two organs at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception provided an opportunity for Maurice Duruflé and his wife, Marie-Madeleine Duruflé-Chevalier, to present a joint recital. The works range from the Baroque to the twentieth century and display the organs' versatility in various styles. Duruflé opens his performance with Buxtehude's buoyant Fugue in C, and follows it with a subdued rendition of Bach's chorale prelude on "Herr Gott, nun schleuss den Himmel auf." Duruflé's arrangement of Handel's organ concerto in A is the centerpiece of the concert, using both the Great and the Chancel organs. Separated by a distance of 300 feet, the Duruflés coordinate their playing through headphones and successfully circumvent the time lag between instruments. Schumann's whimsical Canon concludes their portion of the program. In Tournemire's Chorale Improvisation on "Victimae Paschali," Duruflé's wife used a registration featuring the Pontifical Trumpet, a penetrating reed sound that is perhaps too strong, despite the piece's post-romantic excess. She also performs Duruflé's Prelude and Fugue on the name A.L.A.I.N., a tour de force in tribute to the couple's friend Jehan Alain. Recorded in 1967, the sound is at floor level and the basilica's resonant acoustic is fully captured. © TiVo
