Bach: 6 Flute Sonatas

Andrea Oliva

Classical - Released January 27, 2013 | Hyperion

Hi-Res Booklet
While Angela Hewitt is renowned for her exquisite recordings of the solo keyboard music of JS Bach, her playing with flutist Andrea Oliva on this 2013 Hyperion release must be judged as a collaborative act. Oliva and Hewitt play Bach's flute sonatas (the three genuine sonatas and three attributions) on modern instruments, so there's no room for quibbling about the authenticity of the instrumentation. Indeed, both musicians display a fine sense of Bach's aesthetics and understanding of what sounds right, so only a grudging purist would resist their naturally appealing musicianship in favor of a clinical performance on Baroque instruments. The interpretations are straightforward and tasteful, allowing for some freedom in ornamentation but never to the point of fussiness, and the openness of expression fits well with the bright and even robust sound of the flute and the piano. This recording demonstrates the importance of putting musicality and expressive depth over the dry mechanics or historicity of playing Bach, and there is considerable pleasure to be derived from these highly artistic readings. Hyperion's sound is clear and spacious, yet close enough to give Oliva and Hewitt presence.© TiVo

The Essential Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal

Reggae - Released May 19, 2003 | Columbia - Legacy

The Essential Taj Mahal pulls together the bluesman's Columbia, Warner, Gramavision Private Music, and Hannibal labels' recordings, making it the first truly cross-licensed compilation of his work. Given the depth and breadth of this set (it covers four decades), the listener gets not only a cross-sectional view of the artist, but also his innovative and idiosyncratic journey through the blues: Mahal has not only kept the tradition alive, he's expanded it and deepened it, tracing its roots and developments through the course of American, Caribbean, and African cultures. While there is no unreleased material here, there doesn't need to be. The sheer adventure in these recordings reveals the wealth of the contribution Mahal has made not only to the blues, but to popular culture both present and past. This is a comp to own, to be moved by, and to ultimately enjoy. Columbia issued a three-CD set earlier, but there were things there that needed to be trimmed. This leaner and meaner version is superior.© Thom Jurek /TiVo

Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques make a foray into the Romantic repertoire with this tribute to Pauline Viardot, who was not only the most influential singer of the nineteenth century, but also a pedagogue and composer, whose gifts, personality and incomparable aura made her one of the leading figures of French Romanticism. Handel: Rodelinda

The English Concert

Classical - Released May 14, 2021 | Linn Records

Hi-Res Booklet
Handel's Rodelinda, regina de' Longobardi, HWV 19, was a hit at its first performance in 1725 and has dropped out of the repertory only during periods when all of Handel's operas did. It is absolutely loaded with great Handelian tunes and also has a more-than-coherent plot involving an imprisoned queen in a conquered Milan, the intrigue that swirls around her among her lustful conquerors, and her disguised husband, Bertarido, who attempts to rescue her. The lead role has drawn star sopranos from Joan Sutherland on down, but many listeners will be drawn to the singing here of Lucy Crowe, who really inhabits the role. She sang it with the Dutch National Opera, and here, she returns with convincing delivery that will keep listeners' heads out of the libretto. She is aided by the clean playing of the English Concert under Harry Bicket, who leads from the harpsichord, and a strong supporting cast, including the ideal Iestyn Davies as Bertarido. This performance was planned for the English Concert's annual live concert at Carnegie Hall in New York; that was canceled due to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, but Bicket and the group decided to record the opera instead, inaugurating a new series of Handel operas. The socially distanced playing and singing at St. John's Smith Square is a little rusty in spots, and the venue is somewhat airy for the music, but all in all, this is a Handel opera performance that makes one anxious for more of the same for the performers.© TiVo

Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt

John Frusciante

Pop - Released March 8, 1994 | American Recordings Catalog P&D

Upon leaving the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1992, guitarist John Frusciante delved into home recording, eventually completing a 12-track album titled Niandra Lades that bore the influence of '60s oddballs like Syd Barrett and Captain Beefheart. Niandra Lades languished on the shelf for a while until it was paired with another 12-track collection of Frusciante's home-taping efforts; this one, titled Usually Just a T-Shirt, concentrated on pleasant psychedelic instrumentals with plenty of backward-guitar effects. While some might find the jump from bizarre vocal numbers to atmospheric instrumentals (and the resultant shift in mood) a bit jarring, the two halves do share certain characteristics. Frusciante's singing voice has a fragile, wispy quality that sits well next to the often delicate second half, and the sparse arrangements of the first half help set the stage for the gossamer guitar work later on. Because the whole project has a definite stream-of-consciousness feel, it does fall prey to underdeveloped ideas at times, but overall, Niandra Lades and Usually Just a T-Shirt is an intriguing and unexpected departure from Frusciante's work with the Chili Peppers.© Steve Huey /TiVo

J.S. Bach: Complete sonatas for obbligato harpsichord and violin

Violaine Cochard

Classical - Released May 15, 2020 | NoMadMusic

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or
As soon as they met at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris, Stéphanie-Marie Degand and Violaine Cochard developed a musical complicity: J.S. Bach's Six Sonatas for Obbligato Harpsichord and Violin quickly became their preferred repertoire. These works (with the exception of the 6th) are of Corellian inspiration - on the model of the "sonata da chiesa": alternation of four movements slow-fast-slow-fast. Bach mixes the rigour of North German counterpoint with Italian cantabile alternating with fast movements, almost all of which are fugal. A recording that celebrates thirty years of friendship and shared passion for music. © Nomadmusic
