Underworld

Electronic - Released January 24, 1994 | Smith Hyde Productions

Hi-Res Distinctions The Qobuz Ideal Discography
From the beginning of the first track "Dark & Long," Underworld's focus on production is clear, with songwriting coming in a distant second. The best tracks ("MMM Skyscraper I Love You," "Cowgirl") mesh Hyde's sultry songwriting with Emerson's beat-driven production, an innovative blend of classic acid house, techno, and dub that sounds different from much that preceded it. In a decade awash with stale fusion, Underworld are truly a multi-genre group.© John Bush /TiVo

1992 - 2012

Underworld

Electronic - Released December 4, 2011 | Smith Hyde Productions

The three-disc 1992-2012 anthology replaces the two-disc 1992-2002 as a generous overview of Underworld's lengthy second act. It was issued simultaneously with A Collection, a single-disc release featuring space-saving edits of the group's lengthier highlights. Bizarrely, this lacks some of the cuts included on A Collection -- namely "Beebop Hurry," "Downpipe," "The First Note Is Silent," and "King of Snake" -- and reserves the third disc for rarities, including B-sides, Japan-only bonus tracks, and compilation contributions. The cardboard foldout package is sturdy and holds a glossy, photo-packed booklet. Track information is minimal -- there's no release information whatsoever -- yet most of the photos have dates and locations. Like a lot of career overviews, this is somewhere between an introduction and a collector's item, but it initially retailed for the price of a single disc and holds an edge over the marginally less expensive A Collection.© Andy Kellman /TiVo

God Shuffled His Feet

Crash Test Dummies

Pop/Rock - Released April 5, 1993 | Arista

Thanks to Jerry Harrison's remarkably clear and focused production, Crash Test Dummies' second album became a surprise hit. Apart from the relatively concise pop smarts of the singles "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" and "Afternoons and Coffeespoons," God Shuffled His Feet isn't all that different from the band's first album.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

The Secret

Austin Mahone

Pop - Released May 27, 2014 | BMG Rights Management (US) LLC

Austin Mahone's second EP runs eight tracks, clocking in at 27 minutes, which makes it nearly as long as a short LP, but the appropriate nomenclature for this record doesn't really matter. What matters are the songs, largely produced by RedOne -- the producer who broke into the big time via his work with Lady Gaga -- with the exception being the single "MMM Yeah," a cut produced by the Futuristics, a team who had hits with Wiz Khalifa and Flo Rida, but features Pitbull, a frequent collaborator with RedOne so it's of a piece. "MMM Yeah" and its immediate predecessor "Next to You" are the tracks here that channel EDM into pop -- the latter even contains a refrain about a bass kick -- but, like any pop record, the emphasis isn't on the production, which is all about fashion, but the songs, which are catchy and all about the hook. This mean Mahone isn't always at the forefront but he's undeniably a pop idol, cute in a Bieber fashion -- a fact he doesn't disguise and he couldn't, not when he came onto the radar after covering Bieber on YouTube -- but there's a sense that Mahone still yearns for acceptance, a nicety Justin abandoned once he started to rack up hits. Mahone is ready to please, which is why the big dance tunes on Secret -- which is most of the mini-LP -- are cheerful, even candied, and why the ballad "All I Never Need" is sweet; he's eager like a puppy, which is why Secret is so ingratiating.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Let The Truth Be Told

Laura Izibor

R&B - Released April 29, 2009 | Atlantic Records

Heralded as a prodigious talent in her teens, Laura Izibor has spent the better part of the past four years being groomed for success. The official line is that it's been time well spent perfecting her long-awaited debut statement to the world, but, given that much of the music herein has been floating around in some capacity for the better part of two years, the delay seems to result from uncertainty over how to market her: as a classic soul singer in the Aretha Franklin vein, or a contemporary R&B hitmaker in the Alicia Keys mold. In truth, the conflict is never really resolved, and it leaves somewhat of a sour taste in the mouth, for Let the Truth Be Told could have been much, much more. It starts brightly, literally, with the ebullient opener, "Shine," an uplifting horn-infused number with a soaring and infectious chorus, the kind they're not supposed to make anymore. And she's equally adept at more introspective tones -- in truth, she's in her element. Izibor's songwriting prowess comes to bear on tracks like "Mmm...," which she has the confidence to arm with nothing more than a hummed chorus, and the vulnerable/confrontational "Don't Stay," during which she boasts: "Don't stay, if you don't wanna stay/Baby I'll be OK/Believe me when I say, 'I'm gonna be alright.'" This ability to change roles and switch styles is Let the Truth Be Told's most endearing feature, but it's not without its drawbacks. The comparisons with Keys are by no means unjustified: both combine vocal dexterity with instrumental (piano, in both cases) prowess, but while Keys' mix of soul and hip-hop is well studied and refined, Let the Truth Be Told often feels like an attempt to shoehorn her way into a genre she's not quite prepared for. Witness the irritating glitch vocal samples that litter the otherwise impressive "From My Heart to Yours," or the clumsy, overly simplistic beats that pepper the likes of "I Don't Want You Back" and "Perfect World." These are not chronic problems, but they do take the shine off an otherwise solid debut for a promising young singer.© Dave Donnelly /TiVo
