Complete Captured Live

Peter Tosh

Reggae - Released January 1, 1984 | Parlophone UK

Captured Live is a good, but unremarkable, latter-day live concert from Peter Tosh that finds the reggae superstar running through many of his most familiar songs. For hardcore fans, it's worth a listen, but most others will be satisfied with the better live records and collections already on the market.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

The Healing Game (Deluxe Edition)

Van Morrison

Rock - Released March 4, 1997 | Legacy Recordings

22 years after it was first released, The Healing Game is back in all its glory. This Deluxe 3CD Edition was released in March 2019 and features the original album as well as some thirty new releases from 1995/1997, ranging from alternate takes and duets to live performances. The first disc includes ten original songs and five bonus tracks. The second is devoted to sessions and collaborations, including early versions of The Healing Game and Fire in the Belly, five tracks with Carl Perkins and two with John Lee Hooker. Finally, the third CD is a concert recorded at the Montreux Festival in Switzerland on July 17, 1997. When The Healing Game was released in March 1997, Van Morrison was 52 years old and had about twenty solo albums to his name. Some of them, such as Astral Weeks (1968), Moondance (1970) and Veedon Fleece (1974) are considered to be among the best masterpieces in the history of rock music. Although this album doesn’t quite compare to these marvels, it is still a reminder that the Irish bard is a unique singer and songwriter. The two decades between the release of the original opus and this re-release will give people a chance to reappraise his soul-stirring music – that unmistakable mix of folk and jazz that never gets old and those lyrics spoken directly from the heart. © Max Dembo/Qobuz

There aren't a lot of greatest-hits albums with seven new songs, which is exactly what All the Way: A Decade of Song is. There are just nine hits on this hits collection, and of those, only a handful -- "If You Asked Me To," "Beauty and the Beast," "The Power of Love," "Because You Loved Me," "It's All Coming Back to Me Now," and "My Heart Will Go On" -- were huge hits in the U.S. Her first American hit, "Where Does My Heart Beat Now," isn't here, nor is her duet with Barbra Streisand, "Tell Him." Naturally, this means it's not a definitive collection, but rather an unsatisfying album that feels suspiciously like a piece of product. The best of the hits, like the Meat Loaf-ian epic "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" and "My Heart Will Go On," are certainly among the best adult contemporary songs of the decade, and the new stuff would pale in comparison, even if it was very good -- which, by and large, it is not. Two numbers, the danceable "That's the Way it Is" and the pretty ballad "If Walls Could Talk," work, but the cover of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" falls flat and "All the Way," complete with old vocals from Sinatra, is a disaster. The remaining three aren't bad, but they're not particularly memorable, especially compared to the hits. And that's the problem with All the Way -- if it had been a straight hits collection, with "That's the Way it Is" and "If Walls Could Talk" added to the end, it would have been fine, but padding it with nearly a full album worth of new material hurts it.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

This second album from the young New York rapper is the successor to his 2017 debut The Bigger Artist. Over a year in the making, it sees him continuing to refine his dark-yet-laid-back trap style and features guest spots from a plethora of other artists including Young Thug, Juice WRLD, Offset, and 6ix9ine.© John D. Queen of Da Souf

Latto

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released August 20, 2020 | Streamcut - RCA Records

Atlanta rapper Mulatto is the picture of a viral artist, coming first into national exposure as winner of the second season of Jermaine Dupri's reality show competition The Rap Game and striking out from there with a few ubiquitous singles. Debut studio album Queen of Da Souf taps into the same irrepressible swagger and irreverent charm of Mulatto's runaway hits "No Hook," and "B*tch from Da Souf" (some form of each are included among the 13-song track list) and pads out the material with plentiful features from established artists. The production is inventive, with instrumentals for tunes like "Wuwop" and "Youngest N Richest" augmenting trap drums with loops of frenetic classical orchestras and marimba sounds. "Pull Up" is a more straightforward trap beat, featuring slow-cooking bars from Mulatto and a serviceable cameo from 21 Savage. Over the course of the album, other high-profile guests include City Girls, Gucci Mane, 42 Dugg, Saweetie, and Trina, adding counterpoint to Mulatto's flows of sexual conquest and general dominance of everything in her path.© Fred Thomas /TiVo
