Dvořák: Symphony 9, Smetana: The Moldau, Liszt: Préludes

Ferenc Fricsay

Classical - Released March 1, 1988 | Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Hi-Res Distinctions The Qobuz Ideal Discography
Only a chosen few can captivate listeners with a work that has been brought out over and over again hundreds of times. But that is what is achieved here with a Symphony "From the New World" byAntonin Dvořák which doesn't seem to have aged a bit. Recorded in 1959 in Berlin in excellent stereo, this feverish performance also shows the miracle that an invited leader can create. In a few short recording sessions, Ferenc Fricsay was able to bring forth from the Berlin Philharmonic a sound that was the polar opposite to Karajan's softness. Everything here, with the exception of an irresistibly dreamy Largo is sharp as a knife and whip-smart, in the the style of the Czech Philharmonic. It is the magic of an orchestra that can instantly adapt itself to the personality of a leader who knows how to convince. Recorded in 1960, but with Fricsay's Berlin RIAS (Radio in the American Sector) Orchestra, the symphonic poem by Franz Liszt, Les Préludes, is cut across by an epic gale, reinforced by a slow and majestic tempo. As for The Moldau (Vlatva) by Bedřich Smetana, so close to Czech hearts, Fricsay recorded it several times, most notably in 1960, with the Südfunk Orchester, the film of a rehearsal of which is one of the few visual records of the great Hungarian conductor. It was over the course of that same year that he made this recording, at the head of the Berlin Philharmonic. In 1948, Ferenc Fricsay had signed an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, becoming one of the few artists never to record for another label. On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the conductor's birth in 2014, the yellow label published an impressive box set (available on Qobuz) which brings together all of his recordings. It is a treasure trove for music lovers, because among the records which remain famous to this day, we find a whole series of forgotten works. The recordings were mainly de in the Titania-Palast in Steglitz in Berlin, which was the only concert hall which was spared the Allies’ bombs. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Consolations

Saskia Giorgini

Solo Piano - Released June 9, 2023 | PentaTone

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or
Pianist Saskia Giorgini found both critical and commercial success with her 2022 recording of Liszt's Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, and this 2023 release, which immediately climbed onto classical best-seller charts, follows directly on the earlier album, with the same Bösendorfer piano and the same recording location, the Lisztzentrum in Raiding, Austria. Listeners will not be disappointed, for Consolations has all the virtues of her first Liszt album and adds a few more. The wonderfully controlled lyricism of the Harmonies poétiques et religieuses recurs in the heavily programmatic title work, where Giorgini's playing hints at the presence of all kinds of stories. She plainly excels in the religious, late Liszt, and there are two wonderful examples here, the Deux Legends, portraits of St. Francis of Assisi praying to the birds, and of St. François de Paule. These are difficult works that combine mysticism with Lisztian virtuosity; annotator Mark Berry is right to stress that Liszt did not fully renounce the virtuosity in his later years, but that is not all. Giorgini is just as good in the flashy Three Caprices-Valses and the reflective Liebesträume, the best-known music on the album. In the Valse-Impromptu, she has an uncanny way of suggesting the feeling of spontaneity that seems to have marked Liszt's own playing. Will Giorgini go on with Liszt? She certainly has the technical and emotional wherewithal to do so and to take on more famous works than these.© James Manheim /TiVo

Ančerl Gold Edition 42. Liszt: Les Preludes - Bárta: Viola Concerto - Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No. 1

Jaroslav Karlovský, Miloš Sádlo, Karel Ančerl, Czech Philharmonic

Classical - Released February 7, 2005 | Supraphon a.s.

This is the last disc in Supraphon's outstanding Karel Ancerl Gold Edition, digital remasterings of the entire catalog of recordings by the great Czech conductor with the Czech Philharmonic. While some volumes in the series have been as close to definitive as any recordings have ever come -- Ancerl's Martinu, Janácek, and even Shostakovich are all superlative -- and some volumes have been merely as good as the best performances ever recorded -- Ancerl's Smetana, Dvorák, and Mahler are all superb -- some of the volumes have simply been discs to fill out the edition -- Ancerl's Kabelác, Hanus, and Vycpálek are just this side of endurable. While this disc is far from the worst in the series -- Hanus' Salt Is Better Than Gold ballet holds that dubious distinction -- it is still far from the best. Ancerl's 1964 recording of Liszt's Les Preludes is a standard-issue bathetic and bombastic performance; his 1961 recording of Lubor Barta's Viola Concerto with soloist Jaroslav Karlovský is dedicated but not particularly convincing; but his 1968 recording of Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto with Milos Sadlo is warm, strong, soulful, and completely convincing. Listeners looking to try a recording from the Ancerl edition are advised to try his gut-wrenching recording of Martinu's Memorial to Lidice (Volume 34) or his heaven-storming recording of Janácek's Glagolitic Mass (Volume 7) or his nerve-wracking recording of Shostakovich's Seventh (Volume 23). This volume is only for listeners looking to fill out their collection of Ancerl recordings. Supraphon's digital remastering is a bit dull and a tad drab. © TiVo

Alkan: 25 Préludes dans les tons majeurs et mineurs, Op. 31

Mark Viner

Classical - Released August 30, 2019 | Piano Classics

Booklet
A major addition to the library of Alkan on record from a leading young exponent of lesser-known Romantic piano repertoire. First published in 1847, these preludes form a highly original set of pieces, effectively Alkan’s first foray into the genre of cyclic shorter pieces. The set stands aside from so many in its consistently reflective and introspective approach to a genre recently redefined by Chopin. The key sequence guides us through all the major and minor keys, but instead of settling for all 24 major and minor tonalities, Alkan comes full circle for a twenty-fifth and final C major prelude to complete the set. Alkan had in mind that the Preludes might equally effectively be played on piano or organ – that they might even serve liturgical functions as chorale preludes or instrumental antiphons. However, they have always been regarded as piano music first and foremost, albeit possessed of an often tranquil and reflective temperament, anticipating the mystical works of Liszt such as the Harmonies poétiques et réligieuses (it will be remembered that Liszt regarded Alkan alone as a serious rival to his pianistic prowess). Mark Viner has made his name playing Alkan’s music, and he is widely regarded as among the composer’s most persuasive advocates on record. ‘His playing is never showy,’ remarked the Guardian when reviewing a previous Piano Classics album of the Op.35 Etudes: ‘he emphasises that these are profound explorations of early romantic sensibility first and extreme technical challenges second, and that is a totally convincing way of dealing with some of the most remarkable piano music of its time.’ Viner was praised by The Sunday Times for ‘turning Alkan’s forbidding torrents of notes into real music’. This much-anticipated new album is enhanced by Viner’s own, authoritative booklet essay giving full context both to the Preludes and their reception. The second instalment of a unique and colossal project: the recording of the complete piano works by Alkan by British pianist Mark Viner! © Piano Classics
