Franz Liszt: Schubert & Wagner Transcriptions

Jean-Nicolas Diatkine

Classical - Released May 27, 2022 | Solo Musica

Hi-Res Booklet
Some of Jean-Nicolas Diatkine's singer friends have ended their careers, but their magic is irreplaceable in his eyes, or rather in his ears. He misses them, just as he misses the Schubert, Schumann and Brahms songs they sang. Well, there is only one person who can compensate for this loss, and his name is Franz Liszt. The main aim of transcriptions was to make orchestral works known to a wider audience, at a time when there were far fewer orchestras, and public access to symphony concerts was very limited. But Liszt gives transcriptions a new meaning: he puts the orchestra into the piano, since his style is particularly suited to outsized extravagance. Thus he opens up unprecedented pianistic possibilities, where virtuosity is no longer mere exhibitionism but rather transformed into the art of illusion. His arrangements of Wagner are so convincing that they become his own personal creations. Laurent Bessières, piano tuner at the Paris Philharmonic, suggested for this recording a Schiedmayer piano of 1916 made in Stuttgart, which he had completely rebuilt in collaboration with Antoine Letessier-Salmon, director of the French National Centre for Scientific Research, and Stephen Paulello, piano maker and inventor of the strings that bear his name. This instrument has almost never been used in concert, however excellent work by Laurent Bessières convinced us to try it out in this very special repertoire. © solo musica

Liszt: Harmonies du Soir

Nelson Freire

Classical - Released January 1, 2011 | Decca Music Group Ltd.

Distinctions Gramophone Editor's Choice
Just as the 2010 celebration of the bicentennial of Frédéric Chopin's birth inspired a large number of releases devoted to his piano music, 2011 marked the 200th anniversary of Franz Liszt's birth, and similarly yields a bumper crop of recordings. Nelson Freire's 2010 album of Chopin's Nocturnes was a highlight of that year, so Liszt: Harmonies du Soir is a similar tribute that significantly adds to the pianist's comparatively small number of digital recordings for Decca. This collection of pieces in lyrical, literary, or characteristic veins gives a somewhat broader portrait of Liszt than the Nocturnes offered of Chopin, and Freire's abilities and sensibilities are revealed to a greater extent in this varied program. The refinement and lyricism that permeated the Nocturnes and their performances are replaced with a more passionate and changeable music, for here the styles, techniques, and expressions are more volatile, and the composer's extroverted tendencies stand in contrast to Chopin's reserved emotions. Freire has chosen pieces that are generally reflective and gentle in mood, though the shimmering filigree in the writing frequently erupts in dazzling displays of virtuosity, which a showman like Liszt couldn't restrain for long and which give this program its vibrant colors and interest. Decca's sound is clear and enjoyable for its pleasant ambience.© TiVo

Widmung

Nino Gvetadze

Classical - Released June 27, 2011 | Orchid Classics

Winner of the 2008 International Franz Liszt Competition in Utrecht, pianist Nino Gvetadze has played the music of Liszt in many recitals, and released this 2011 album in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth. The most significant work of this program is the mammoth Sonata in B minor, which occupies the last half of the disc and exudes the most imposing presence, though the Ballade No. 2 in B minor is almost as impressive and can be regarded as something of a counterweight for the first half. The Hungarian Rhapsody No. 10 in E minor, and Liszt's transcriptions of Robert Schumann's Liebeslied (Widmung) and Franz Schubert's Gretchen am Spinnrade provide extra-musical links to the sonata, though listeners may enjoy them simply as examples of Liszt's highly varied and colorful output. Gvetadze plays with a fine balance of delicacy and bravado, and her interpretations are perfectly tailored to the needs of each piece. The variety of Liszt's expressions are matched by her subtle use of color and accentuation, and her touch is remarkably consistent and even, for changing easily from the softest dynamics to the loudest with little apparent effort. While this is a fine album, it is short, and some might wish Gvetadze had included a few more pieces for better value. But this is a worthy contribution to the Liszt celebrations, and Gvetadze's artistic performances deserve serious attention. © TiVo
