Personne d'autre

Françoise Hardy

French Music - Released April 6, 2018 | Parlophone (France)

Hi-Res Booklet
Françoise Hardy is a pop survivor. As she admitted herself, her 2012 album L’Amour Fou sounded the death knell of a prolific 50-year career. But after listening completely by chance to a song of Finnish band Poets of the fall, she decided to adapt it in French and that’s how this new album adventure all started. The singer of Message personnel has always dressed up her albums with patchy elements from all of sorts of collaborations (both for the music and lyrics), and this Personne d’autre is no exception to the rule. A personality seems to stand out, and that’s Erick Benzi, who composed nine songs on this album. He’s also the author behind most arrangements. In addition to Benzi, the credits feature La Grande Sophie, Thierry Stremler and… Michel Berger (for the cover of Seras-tu là?).
Unsurprisingly Personne d’autre specifically focuses on death, with which Françoise Hardy had a close encounter in the middle of the 2010s. But rather than fearing it, the singer looks at death straight in the eyes, even considering it with a form of lightness, like in the counting rhyme Trois petits tours – the only perky track on the album. But aside from this surprising song, the opus seems like a sweet purgatory, in which atonement appears to be a step more pleasant than painful. This flawless harmony comes first and foremost from the magnificent melodies that enrich each song: in the tender lullaby Dors mon ange, the melancholic Personne d’autre or the elegant waltz Quel Dommage, Françoise Hardy shows once again her attraction for beautiful and noble melodies. At times, deadly metaphors are not the most subtle, like in the lyrics of Train Spécial, but it's arrangements are deliciously 80s. Same goes for the strong echo that underlies her voice here and there, transforming her de facto into an angelic figure rising into heaven. But overall, the listener will be seduced by the gracious serenity of what − from all angles − sure seems like a farewell album. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

Dutilleux: Métaboles, L'arbre des songes & Symphony No. 2 "Le double"

Ludovic Morlot

Classical - Released August 14, 2015 | Seattle Symphony Media

Hi-Res Booklet
Ludovic Morlot and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra have focused considerable attention on modern orchestral repertoire, and this second album of important pieces by Henri Dutilleux shows their interest in innovative programming and works of high sophistication. Dutilleux's music is characterized by its economy and refinement, and the three selections on this 2015 release on the orchestra's own label are compact, cogent, and transparently scored. Métaboles is a study of continual organic changes found in nature and represented in music by evolving sections for woodwinds, strings, brass, and percussion, which culminate in a final virtuosic section for the whole orchestra. L'Arbre des songes (Tree of Dreams), Dutilleux's violin concerto, featuring violinist Augustin Hadelich, is a four-movement work connected by three interludes, and the metamorphosis of themes between the soloist and the ensemble is a prominent feature. The Symphony No. 2, "Le Double," employs a full orchestra and a chamber orchestra within it, to interact and spur on ideas, in a manner similar to the concerto grosso form. Morlot and his musicians show great respect for Dutilleux, and their performances here and on their 2014 CD of the Symphony No. 1, Tout un monde lointain, and The Shadows of Time are essential listening for all who want to know this composer better. © TiVo

Samazeuilh, Decaux, Ferroud, Aubert

Aline Piboule

Classical - Released March 11, 2021 | Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo

Hi-Res Booklet
After her first solo album at Artalinna devoted to works by Fauré and Dutilleux, pianist Aline Piboule leaves music's well-trodden path to offer us a selection of unknown and endearing French works. Aline Piboule likes, she says, "to decompartmentalise genres and eras in order to catch a glimpse of links which are often ignored, to taste the spirit of novelty, of actuality that hides behind the names of forgotten composers. That's how this exploration of repertoires fascinates me".Friend of Fauré and Ravel, close to Richard Strauss, Gustave Samazeuilh left behind a very small catalogue of finely crafted works, of very personal and subtle writing. His work as an arranger and journalist, especially as a music critic, took precedence over his career as a composer. Aline Piboule exhumed her beautiful Clair de lune au large, the second part of the collection Le chant de la mer which she sets out ahead of the four Clairs de lune written by Abel Decaux, a Norman composer who studied under Massenet. An organist at the Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre, he settled in the United States for more than ten years before succeeding Louis Vierne as organ teacher at the César-Franck School. His suite Clairs de lune heralded the atonal language of Arnold Schönberg.Lyonnais composer Pierre-Octave Ferroud remains known for having founded the Concerts du Triton in Paris, in the early 1930s. These were dedicated to chamber music with an international approach that saw the first performances of works by Stravinsky and Prokofiev. His shocking death at the age of thirty-six, in a terrible road accident in Hungary, deprived French music of one of its most promising composers.A friend of Maurice Ravel, who asked him to give the first performance of his Valses nobles et sentimentales, Louis Aubert successfully tried his hand in all genres. A brilliant orchestrator, he is credited with five ballets, orchestral pieces and chamber music. His triptych Sillages, Op. 27, considered his masterpiece, is sometimes compared to the best works of his contemporaries, Debussy and Ravel. Aline Piboule knows how to translate all the mystery and appeal of the great outdoors. © François Hudry/Qobuz
