Eclipse

Amadou & Mariam

World - Released December 9, 2022 | Because Music

Hi-Res
Eclipse is the experimental new album by Amadou & Mariam, the power couple of West African music. This album comprises a series of concerts, launched ten years ago and recorded in total darkness. This wasn’t done to save electricity but rather to share the performers’ experience of blindness. The spectators no longer focused on what they saw on the stage, just on what they could hear and feel; their ears wide open, sensitive to the atmosphere and the nuance of the music and the stories it tells. This very personal project is also conceived as an autobiographical tale, with a narrator who introduces the songs by recounting the important stages of Amadou & Mariam’s story. They met in 1975, at the Institute for Young Blind People in Bamako. They soon released their first songs in Mali but would eventually reach international fame and begin collaborating with rock stars. French rapper Oxmo Puccino has the honour of recounting Amadou & Mariam’s story in a sonic atmosphere which encapsulates the streets of Bamako. The songs performed by Amadou & Mariam follow the same chronology: from the acoustic modesty of the early days to their more recent danceable hits. The show itself featured admirable performances from producers, musicians and technicians who were obviously not accustomed to working in the dark. For the audience, both of that time and today, it’s a whole new sensory experience, immersed in the love and passions of Amadou & Mariam. Definitely worth listening to this one with your eyes closed, too. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz

Cello 360

Christian-Pierre La Marca

Classical - Released November 27, 2020 | naïve classique

Hi-Res Booklet
This new concept album confirms an already well-established trend, that of a new generation of young classical musicians who feel stifled by their repertoires and want to open the doors to freedom, or to what they see as freedom. In Cello 360, Christian-Pierre La Marca created a work for solo cello without any accompaniment, totally cross-genre, which pays no heed to temporal or stylistic boundaries. It runs from Marin Marais to Dutilleux, from Purcell to Ligeti, from Thierry Escaich to Charlie Chaplin and The Beatles with disarming ease and a technical mastery which lets him give free rein to his artistic expression. Having only one (beautiful) instrument at his disposal, he plays with different bows, which prove so important for the production of sound, attack, power and rhythmic subtlety. He also selects different acoustics and sound recording techniques to match his chosen works.  His album, which doesn't belong in any one realm, defies classification. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Spontini: Olimpie

Flemish Radio Choir

Classical - Released March 22, 2019 | Bru Zane

Hi-Res Booklet
Olimpie was described by Hector Berlioz as a “sublime work” and Spontini himself viewed it as his best composition. When it was premiered in Paris, however, it gathered no interest. The work is based on a lesser-known play by Voltaire and was considered out of fashion before it even reached the stage in 1819. In Berlin two years later, in a translated and happier version modified by E.T.A. Hoffmann, Olimpie was more of a success. Back in Parisian venues in 1826, the piece was rarely played, which Berlioz regretted. It occasionally made it to Germany, but was eventually forgotten until its rediscovery in the 1950’s as an Italian version performed by La Tebaldi in Florence. Olimpie is not often included in operas’ repertoires, but nevertheless, with its visuals and refined language, it features many magnificent moments and offers a plethora of staging opportunities. The original 1819 musical score has disappeared. Jérémie Rohrer is presenting instead the 1826 version of the score prepared by Federico Agostinelli with various printed sources as well as an autographed manuscript. The album follows this version with the exception of two cuts during Acts I and III. The recording is meticulous and benefits from the splendid acoustic of the Philharmonie de Paris. Recorded before the concert given at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, it features a set of excellent soloists led by Jérémie Rohrer’s imagination and energy. A perfect resurrection and a gift from the indispensable Bru Zane Foundation in Venice. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Le Monde de Sainte-Colombe

Voix Humaines, Les

Classical - Released June 21, 2019 | ATMA Classique

Booklet
Once again, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe’s music works its magic. Fearing neither expression nor a wide vibrato (which is never too methodical or simply there for decoration), Susie Napper and Margaret Little offer a selection of pieces taken from the complete recording of Concerts à deux violes esgales, recorded in Quebec City in 2003 and 2004. Le changé, Le tendre, L'attentif, Le Tombeau des regrets and L'estourdy are all like insights into the soul.Found post-mortem in the papers of pianist Alfred Cortot, the manuscript of these sixty-seven concerts is a balanced dialogue between the two instruments, almost like a conversation between cultured friends philosophising about existentialism. The fascinating music ranges from deep introspection to dance, all the while retaining a certain spontaneity. This psychological musical portrait, like an equivalent to a painter’s portrait, is perceptible throughout and perfectly illustrates the personality traits - and probably the physical traits too - of the characters illustrated here. © François Hudry/Qobuz
