Cooking

Géraldine Laurent

Jazz - Released October 18, 2019 | Gazebo

Hi-Res
New bottle, same old wine! With Cooking, Géraldine Laurent serves up another delicacy along with the entire team from her brilliant 2015 album At Work: the amazing Paul Lay on piano, Yoni Zelnik on double bass, Donald Kontomanou on drums and the pianist Laurent de Wilde on production. The years spent in each other’s company have clearly strengthened their intuitiveness and they reveal here a record that feels even more powerful than its predecessor. Those who follow Géraldine Laurent will recognise the saxophonist’s warmth and musical force. She truly makes her instrument sing, without ever being excessive. Between the four of them, both the individual conversations and the collective playing reach new heights of cohesion. Nobody poses any metaphysical questions on the state of jazz in 2019, no. They’re there to conjure up strong emotions and call on ghosts such as Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Paul Desmond and Eric Dolphy. In some ways, the title Cooking speaks volumes. Laurent de Wilde comments "Géraldine wanted to call it that because in music, like in the kitchen, it is a team effort to measure out each ingredient so as to reach a perfect final result. Because an album is cooked up like a meal and it is in fact possible to have taste buds in your ears. Because the pleasure of music is organised, weighed and tasted. And because we always like to hear a passing musician feeling that same pleasure when they push open the venue door and exclaim, amazed: wow... what’s cooking?!". Ultimately, while At Work featured themes by the greats (Monk, Mingus, Jobim), Cooking is above all the work of Géraldine Laurent, who signs ten of the eleven themes. Here too, her beautiful pieces contain nods towards her elders, but above all they are vast soundscapes - perfect for improvisations. This is pure jazz (no added colourings or conservatives) and you come out from the intense 47 minutes feeling thoroughly reinvigorated. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Just Jazz (feat. Henri Texier, Géraldine Laurent & Mauro Negri)

Aldo Romano

Jazz - Released May 19, 2008 | Dreyfus Jazz

Aldo Romano has long proven himself an innovative leader and the 2007 sessions that make up Just Jazz are no exception. Romano is not one to take a lot of solos himself, preferring to showcase his bandmates while adding color behind them. His pianoless quartet consists of clarinetist Mauro Negri, who played on Romano's earlier Dreyfus CD État de Fait, old friend Henri Texier on bass, and the much younger Géraldine Laurent, a gifted French saxophonist whose star is rising. Most of the release focuses on Romano's captivating originals, highlighted by the emotional "Cité-Soleil" (French for "Sun City"), named for the wretched shanty town in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. "Township" is an infectious African-flavored chant, with Laurent's vocal-like alto recalling Eric Dolphy, and Negri's electronically altered clarinet adding seasoning. "Chick Webb," named for the famous swing drummer, has a fun twist in that the bassist is the featured soloist. Romano's love for Ornette Coleman's work is well known, so it shouldn't be surprising to hear the dissonance within the drummer's "Libero!!" ("Free!!")." His powerful interpretation of Fats Waller's maudlin "Black and Blue" and lighthearted take of Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag" round out this diverse, rewarding CD.© Ken Dryden /TiVo

Time Out Trio

Géraldine Laurent

Pop - Released October 8, 2007 | Dreyfus Jazz

For her debut recording, modern mainstream jazz alto saxophonist Géraldine Laurent uses a rhythm section with just bass and drums, which keeps her personal playing firmly in focus for the listener, but may also expose drawbacks. As such, those inherent shortcomings seem obvious, but the positives of her sound are also clear. She possesses a strong sense of self and identity, emphasizing elements of dexterity and at times whimsy. At the forefront of her influences admittedly is tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins, but you would also surmise she's heard her share of Phil Woods and Lee Konitz. Charles Mingus is another icon on her plate, as evidenced by her strong interpretation of the Latin-flavored "Tijuana Gift Shop" and funky, changing-the-changes take on "Fables of Faubus." She tends to play a lot of notes on "Autumn Nocturne," and rarely slows to smell the roses on traditional ballads like the midtempo "Skylark" or "I Fall in Love Too Easily." There's a palpable anxiety during "Skylark," the super-fast Ornette Coleman piece "Rejoicing," and her original "A Quiet," which suggests she's trying too hard to get all of her expressionism out in the moment. Listen to her sped-up and slowed-down take of Wayne Shorter's "Lester Left Town" and you really hear her impatience. Then again, an overtly long intro to "Faubus" would suggest that her need to improvise might be misplaced at times. It's clear that Laurent is making an attempt to deconstruct certain themes she loves and craft them her into own style, but at times it smacks of gimmickry. This is not to say on any level that there's only minimal talent brimming from this player -- you can hear much potential present. Perhaps on her next outing she'll be more relaxed and able to translate this energy, which is likely more attainable in her live performances, into a studio setting.© Michael G. Nastos /TiVo
