Le Concert des Oiseaux. Vincent Bouchot: Le Carnaval des animaux en péril

La Rêveuse

Classical - Released February 10, 2023 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
Several famous pieces of music based on birdsong appeared in the 19th and 20th centuries; those by Saint-Saëns, Britten, and Ravel are here, although Messiaen is not. However, the affinity between music and birdsong had been explored for centuries before that, and the early music group La Rêveuse here provides some delightful examples. The always pictorial François Couperin is represented, as is Rameau, but other composers are less familiar but no less charming. Sample the works by Theodor Schwartzkopff, Michel Blavet, and especially Michel Pignolet de Montéclair (1667-1737), whose "Les Ramages" ("The Songs") names a group of birds and then illustrates their songs. Then there are historical-instrument versions of Saint-Saëns, Britten, and Ravel. One may accept this idea or not, but even in the latter case, they don't do much to dent the charm of the whole. The program ends with a work by contemporary composer Vincent Bouchot, Le Carnaval des animaux en péril, a kind of a take-off on Saint-Saëns for the Anthropocene era that also calls forth a striking variety of instruments from La Rêveuse. Another questionable idea is that, in keeping with the practices of this group, recorded birdsong is heard between some of the tracks. Whatever aspects of this release might be doubtful, it rarely fails to bring a smile. © James Manheim /TiVo

Tristan

Jean-Louis Murat

French Music - Released January 1, 2008 | [PIAS] Le Label

Hi-Res
A reclusive and poetically careful songwriter, Jean-Louis Murat is the French equivalent of Leonard Cohen in many ways, and his sensitive and lyrically ambitious songs are among the best on the French rock scene and have been for many years. Always creatively restless, Murat released Tristan (on which he played all the instruments) in 2008, retelling the sad story of Tristan in love with Isolde. © Steve Leggett /TiVo

Cantique De Noël: French Music for Christmas from Berlioz To Debussy

Choir of Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge

Classical - Released October 19, 2018 | Delphian Records

Download not available
The Choir of Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, is not one of the more well-known English collegiate groups, but under director Geoffrey Webber it has carved out a niche, exploring unfamiliar repertories, often non-British. To take on the challenge of material central to the French late Romantic era, as the Choir and conductor Geoffrey Webber do here, may seem cheeky for an English group, but this makes it all the more impressive when they succeed. The program is beautifully constructed, with a mixture of organ and piano accompaniments, and the album was recorded not at Gonville & Caius but at Exeter College, Oxford, because of the ringing French-style organ there. Several of these pieces have fed into the common stock of Christmas carols, giving the album the feel of discovering what made these tunes famous (including the final Noël d'enfants, otherwise known as Angels we have heard on high, arranged by Fauré, and the Portuguese Hymn (aka Adeste fideles, in a version by Gounod). Sample the 40 Noëls Anciens, traditional songs arranged by Léon Roques: they are not such familiar melodies, at least outside France, but they're lovely. Most of all, though, it's the sheer sound of the choir that makes this work. You might think that such a thing would result from a long accretion of tradition, but Webber makes his choir into a remarkable facsimile of a Parisian church choir, with a big round sound, making room for sheer lyricism in place of English purity. He, along with Delphian's engineers, balance all the musical lines beautifully. A joyous, fresh holiday release.© TiVo
