Maria Mater Meretrix

Anna Prohaska

Classical - Released April 14, 2023 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
By no means should you be expecting the "typical" productions we so often associate with the violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja. Together with the soprano Anna Prohaska, she has developed a highly original programme which brings violin and vocals together. In this respect, while we were delighted to find a recording of the beautiful and all too rare Maria-Triptychon, which Frank Martin wrote in 1968 for Irmgard Seefried and her violinist husband Wolfgang Schneiderhan, we wonder whether it was really necessary to dismantle this polyptych whose three movements tell the story of the mother of Christ with perfect fluidity. It must be said that the entirety of this unusual album feels rather all over the place, very much like György Kurtág who unsurprisingly features in this curious inventory of a thousand years of music, from Hildegard von Bingen to the present day.We need to look elsewhere for the main theme and, more precisely, at the questioning of the two musicians around the subject of female emancipation and “the sensitive exploration of their common experiences as women evolving in the current music industry.” This quest for content, set to music around the figure of Mary, evokes a mixture of shimmering colours created by the Camerata de Berne orchestra, and depicts a journey through the ages and arias which incorporates so many of the contradictions of human nature. We highly recommend that you immerse yourself fully, and listen to these twenty tracks from beginning to end. This way you will be better able to appreciate this strangely fascinating patchwork, which feels like a work of art in its own right. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Verdi: Un ballo in maschera

Orchestre Philharmonique de Monté-Carlo

Opera - Released June 16, 2023 | PentaTone

Hi-Res Booklet
Studio recordings of full operas are not so common anymore, but among the few positive side effects of the COVID-19 pandemic was that it did spawn several. This one sounds a bit buttoned-up, perhaps because of the restrictions of the time; the album was made in the summer of 2021, and the contributions of the Transylvania State Choir were downloaded from afar (actually, this would be hard to tell by listening), but there is a lot that is distinctive about the performance of this Verdi opera, whose tragicomic quality has made it a special favorite in modern times. Verdi moved the action from Sweden to Boston to circumvent a censorship restriction; nowadays, the Swedish setting is generally preferred, but the curious American colonial setting somehow seems to fit the mixture of elements in the opera, loading political intrigue onto the old comic trope of the masked ball. The biggest news is the presence of tenor Freddie De Tommaso in the lead role of Riccardo. He has been bubbling under the surface of the opera scene, and with this recording, he takes a major step into the spotlight. Consider one of his big numbers, like "Forse la soglia attinse" in Act III, for an idea of why his performance is bringing to mind some of the greats who have recorded this opera. He is ably backed by a strong cast, including the rougher but powerfully dramatic Lester Lynch as Renato, making a compelling contrast with De Tommaso and Saioa Hernández as Amelia. This vocally strong Un ballo in maschera is well worth the attention of Verdi lovers.© James Manheim /TiVo

Verdi: La Traviata

Dame Joan Sutherland

Classical - Released January 1, 1980 | Decca Music Group Ltd.

Joan Sutherland was in her early fifties when she made this 1976 recording of La traviata, so her voice has a maturity that isn't ideal for Violetta. Her technique and her distinctive brightness are still fully evident, though, and her performance is sometimes vocally dazzling. Luciano Pavarotti was close to his prime at the time of the recording, and he sings with his characteristic breadth, vigor, and intensity. Matteo Manuguerra is a sturdy Germont. Richard Bonynge leads the National Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Opera Chorus in a spirited, traditional take on the score, one of the relatively few recordings of the opera that is absolutely complete. The sound is superb and clear, clean, and present.© TiVo

Forza Azzurri!

La Serenissima

Classical - Released November 11, 2022 | Signum Records

Hi-Res Booklet
Looking at the variety of Italian baroque instrumental music on offer to today’s listener, one could be forgiven for thinking that Vivaldi had faced little competition during his lifetime. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Whilst the volume of music that flowed from Vivaldi’s pen was unusually plentiful, many other composers were needed to fulfil the needs of the regional courts and churches throughout Italy. Expert early-music ensemble La Serenissima perform here some works by Lorenzo Gaetano Zavateri, Giuseppe Sammartini, Evaristo Felice Dall’Abaco and Giuseppe Antonio Brescianello alongside works by Vivaldi on this new album of Italian Baroque masterpieces. © Signum Records

Verdi

Ludovic Tezier

Classical - Released February 5, 2021 | Sony Classical

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or / Arte
It was time for Ludovic Tézier to finally provide his admirers with a recital. His performances as a Verdian baritone are impressive: Rigoletto, Simon Boccanegra, Falstaff, Giorgio Germont (La Traviata), Posa (Don Carlo), Le Conte De Luna (Il Trovatore), Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Iago (Otello). And almost all of these are reprised in this solo album. To this impressive list of stage roles, Tézier brings the welcome addition of arias from Ernani, Macbeth and Nabucco all accompanied by Frédéric Chaslin at the head of the orchestra of the Teatro Comunale in Bologna. It was in 1998 in Tel Aviv that the French baritone played his first Verdian role. He was thirty years old when he was Ford in a production of Falstaff. "There is an absolutely fascinating energy in Verdi, both for the audience and for the singers", he admits. "His roles are usually very challenging, but his music acts at the same time as a fountain of youth. Verdi is brimming with vitality, which is what allowed me to return to the stage just two days after my father's death". Now with a fully-matured voice, Ludovic Tézier is in demand all over the world for his Verdi roles. He is one of the best performers of Verdi's work, standing alongside the late Piero Cappuccilli who remains his great role model. This record offers timely confirmation of his stature. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Haydn: Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze (Vokalfassung)

Anna-Lena Elbert

Classical - Released March 21, 2006 | Carus

Hi-Res Booklet
The German choir conductor Frieder Bernius has a great number of recordings to his name. These range from Schutz’s Symphoniae Sacrae to Haydn’s Stabat Mater, as well as numerous discoveries concerning the works of Jan Dismas Zelenka. In 1984, Frieder Bernius had already recorded the rare oratorio version of Joseph Haydn's The Seven Last Words of Christ in Stuttgart. Edited in 2006 by Hänssler, the piece featured excellent soloists. Now, almost forty years after Bernius’ original recording, Hänssler is offering a new version of this famous work on his current label, Carus. It's common knowledge that Haydn was very fond of this work. It was commissioned around 1785, by a canon of Cadiz, for the purpose of being performed during a Good Friday service. Consisting of eight slow, meditative movements that culminate in a striking terremoto ("earthquake"), this singular work was originally intended to be performed by an orchestra. Haydn created an arrangement for a string quartet, which he followed with a piano transcription, leading to his penning of a final revival in the form of an oratorio—with a set of texts revised by Baron Gottfried Van Swieten. This most recent version is the least well known, undoubtedly overshadowed by masterpieces such as The Creation (Die Schopfung) and The Seasons (Die Jahrezeiten). This new version, by Frieder Bernius, was recorded in March 2021 at the Stadthalle in Sindelfingen, near Stuttgart. It inspires introspection, creating an atmosphere of both naïve and sincere faith that aligns perfectly with Haydn’s spirit. © François Hudry/Qobuz
