Glass: Cocteau Trilogy

Katia Labèque

Classical - Released February 23, 2024 | Universal Music Division Decca Records France

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Qobuz Album of the Week
Philip Glass' three operas based on films by Jean Cocteau, inspired by the composer's youthful experiences in Paris, are among his most variegated works and perhaps among the ones most likely to win over those unpersuaded by the composer. This release took shape as Katia and Marielle Labèque performed concerts devoted to two-piano arrangements of numbers from these operas in 2020 and 2023; the arrangements are by Glass colleague Michael Riesman. Many recordings of Glass have come from his own orbit, but this one, released by the Deutsche Grammophon label and a presence on classical best-seller charts in early 2024, shows the value in opening up the field. The Labèques bring a fluent but lively quality to the music that illuminates the material out of which the operas are woven. Sample the ragtime-like opening, "Le café," from Act I at the beginning. Elsewhere, one hears echoes of Gluck, Bach, and more, all superimposed on Glass' characteristic repeating patterns. The durable popularity of Katia and Marielle Labèque, still at the top of the duo piano heap, is remarkable, and it has occurred in part because the sisters are unafraid to take on new repertory. Here, they have done a spectacular job.© James Manheim /TiVo

Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring & The Firebird

Orchestre de Paris

Classical - Released March 24, 2023 | Decca Music Group Ltd.

Hi-Res Booklet
One year after winning a Qobuzissime for his first Sibelius monograph, Klaus Mäkelä is back with the Orchestre de Paris for a programme devoted to Stravinsky's two stage masterpieces: The Rite of Spring and The Firebird. The Rite of Spring is perhaps best remembered for its chaotic premiere in May 1913, Paris, where it famously provoked a riot amongst the audience. Over time, this event has left its mark on history as one of the most notorious artistic scandals of the 20th century. It’s impossible to overlook this vital work today, and yet its canonisation has arguably caused its monstrous and archaic character to fade out of our collective memory.Somehow, Mäkelä manages to completely restore the cathartic dimension of the piece. From the meticulous choice of tempos to the contrasts between the different orchestral sections, every measure of the score is rich and invigorating. This young Finn is a true master, revealing himself as a conductor of rare sensitivity and incisive vision that commands with confidence. On the flipside, The Firebird is inspired by a Russian folk tale in which Ivan Tsarevich battles the demigod Kashchei. Under Mäkelä, it becomes a grandiose festival of light and sound; a ballet imbued with a visceral sense of urgency that keeps the listener captivated throughout. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz

La planète sauvage

Alain Goraguer

Film Soundtracks - Released January 1, 1973 | Universal Music Division Decca Records France

Hi-Res
In 2000, the European label DC Recordings reissued on CD the soundtrack from the cult sci-fi animated film La Planète Sauvage (released in English as The Fantastic Planet). The René Laloux film, which won a Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1973, was supported by a soundtrack by Alain Goraguer, mostly known for his work as Serge Gainsbourg's arranger. Goraguer's music consists of 25 short vignettes. Each is a contextualized adaptation of one of three main musical themes. The main theme is very reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Atom Heart Mother Suite" (same half-time tempo, mellotron, harpsichord, and wah-wah guitar), and the other two are a ballad and a circus-like waltz. The music is very '70s-clichéd and will appeal to fans of French and Italian '70s soundtrack stylings. Although repetitive, the album itself creates an interesting marijuana-induced sci-fi floating mood, blending psychedelia, jazz, and funk (the album has been sampled by a few hip-hop artists). The 16-page booklet includes stills from the film, a description of the plot, and biographical notes on the composer, the director, and the illustrator, all in English -- but, alas, no musicians' credits. DC Recordings reissued the album on both CD and LP, the latter version also including a poster.© François Couture /TiVo

La mamma

Charles Aznavour

French Music - Released January 1, 1963 | Universal Music Division Barclay

Hi-Res
Charles Aznavour's La Mamma appeared in 1963, ten years after his first real chart hit, "Jezebel." Gone are the Maurice Chevalier cribs and the Louis Prima stylistics. In their place is a sense of poetic French drama; a command of his own gravelly voice even Aznavour thought impossible, and a pop singer so theatrical in his delivery he has been caricatured more than any other French vocalist. But is the guy ever great here! From the minor swing-pop tunes like "Je t'Attends" to the smash "Sylvie," with its Latin arrangement and electric guitar backdrop framing the horns and bongos. "Sylvie," with its tragic narrative, can accurately be called Aznavour's first attempt at rock. It's not that, but it prefigures the style Serge Gainsbourg would make his shortly thereafter. There are also a couple of Bobby Vee-styled knockoffs that are dynamite: "Et Poutant" and "Les Adventuriers." In addition, one of Aznavour's classics is redone: "Poker" from Jezebel. Of the 18 tracks collected here -- the original album and singles and B-sides; and aside from the title track and "Sylvie" -- the most poignant track has to be the smoother-than-smooth ballad that erupts into a fit of unrequited passion: "Si Je N'Avais Plus." With the horns and strings framing Aznavour's plea, only the skittering drums and near-feedbacked electric guitar give away the desperation in his voice. It's so ragged it's beautiful.© Thom Jurek /TiVo
