Offenbach : La Périchole (Live)

Marc Minkowski

Classical - Released June 14, 2019 | Bru Zane

Hi-Res Booklet
Recordings of Offenbach's 1868 operetta La Périchole, here performed in an 1873 revision, have been rather uncommon. True, it doesn't contain any of the big Offenbach hits, and its Peruvian setting, with a variety of Spanish dances and chinoiserie standing in for whatever music might have been heard in colonial Peru, seems increasingly preposterous as time goes on. However, verisimilitude has never been a requirement in operetta, and this story of the titular street singer (who was an actual historical individual) pursued by a sleazy colonial administrator hits a lot of the bases. Anglophone listeners will note that Arthur Sullivan surely knew this music inside and out, and replicated the combination of limpid songs for the heroine and quite a few sharp narrative choruses. This production, recorded live in 2018 at the Festival Radio France Occitanie in Montpellier, is nothing fancy, but that is its charm. La Périchole is nicely sung by a mezzo-soprano with the delightful name of Aude Extrémo, who resists the temptation to ham it up (sample her drunk scene, "Ah, quel diner je viens de faire") and inhabits the role well. The large cast is consistent, and conductor Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre, far from their Baroque origins, keep things moving in a lively way. One gets the sense that Offenbach would have been fully satisfied, and the recording is a must for any operetta fan.© TiVo

La Confusion

Amadou & Mariam

Africa - Released September 22, 2017 | Because Music

Hi-Res
This time round, no artists involved in the casting of Amadou & Mariam’s eighth studio album are more famous than the couple in charge. No prestigious production by Damon Albarn, Manu Chao or M. There are no flashy featuring by Santigold, Tiken Jah Fakoly or TV On The Radio. With almost two decades of success under their belt, the Malian duo can very well attract attention on their own, while staying faithful to their usual style, straddling between grooves from Bamako and European clubs. To produce La Confusion they gave his chance to Adrien Durand from ethno-futuristic combo Bon Voyage Organisation, who managed to refresh their already effective recipe without removing any of the ingredients that made it successful in the first place. Amadou’s lively guitars and the couple’s notorious vocal harmonies happily slide into arrangements that, with light touches, build sensitive connections between West-African dance music, rock, electro, reggae, funk, Afro-Latino and blues. Whether in French or Bambara, Amadou & Mariam are always mindful of the most urgent issues of their environment and of our time. The title song is about the confusion that seems to dominate our society, C’est chaud talks about exile, Massa Allah implores clergymen to ease people’s minds, and Femmes du monde serves as a eulogy to female wisdom. Their joyful and festive music emerges as the perfect antidote against discouragement and autumn gloom. © BM/Qobuz

Theory of Becoming

Evgueni GALPERINE

Classical - Released October 21, 2022 | ECM New Series

Hi-Res Booklet
Composer Evgueni Galperine has spent much of his career as a film composer, working, often with his brother Sacha, not only in Europe but with such American directors as Barry Levinson and Barry Sonnenfeld. With Theory of Becoming, he turns to abstract composition, and the results are an intriguing mix. Galperine's cinematic background is clearly audible; the album comprises short (mostly three- to six-minute) cuts that have some kind of more or less programmatic content, but it is quite a bit more economical than his film music, and it includes electronic sounds and sampling to a greater degree. Much of the music is played by Galperine himself, augmented on various tracks by a trumpet, cello, or voice, but these are not the only acoustic sounds; the sampling aspect is key. Galperine calls his method an "augmented reality of acoustic instruments, created from recordings made with real and virtual instruments. The numerous transformations the instruments undergo allow me to capture their acoustic nature while also adding techniques and colours impossible to produce in reality." Galperine's own notes point the listener toward what he had in mind with some of the tracks, and he remains a powerfully representational composer. He is certainly not the only film composer to write independent music, but the mixture here is unique and is highly recommended to those interested in the nexus between film music and the contemporary concert tradition. ECM provides splendid engineering at the Studio EGP in Paris. © James Manheim /TiVo

After his 2003 debut album, L’Amour Parfait, which contained the benchmark single "C'est Quand le Bonheur?," Cali became one of the brightest of France’s emerging pop stars. After a couple of live releases, this set, Menteur, his sophomore studio effort, hit the streets in the fall of 2005. Some editions include the bonus track “La Lettre.”© Steve Leggett /TiVo
