Lully: Acis et Galatée

Les Talens Lyriques

Opera - Released October 14, 2022 | Aparté

Hi-Res Booklet
Composed on 1686 as part of the festivities organised by the Duc de Vendôme in honour of the Grand Dauphin, during the latter’s visit to his estate at the Château d’Anet in September of that year, Acis et Galatée is Lully’s last complete opera. His faithful librettist Quinault having retired from writing for the stage, he collaborated this time with the poet Campistron on a work that tells the story of the love between the sea-nymph Galatea and the shepherd Acis – a love threatened by the violence of the jealous cyclops Polyphemus. This opera, an undoubted dramatic success, gives the orchestra an important part, expressively evoking, for example, the giant’s cries of anger, the terror of the chorus, and the lovers’ hasty flight in Act III. It includes some magnificent pieces, including the final Passacaille, as well as inventive treasures, such as duet for hautes-contre (high tenors) “Ah! je succombe au tourment qui m'accable”, or the burlesque march that accompanies the entry of Polyphemus and his fellow cyclopes, conveying their uncouthness. But the loveliest pieces in the score are for Galatea: “Enfin, j’ai dissipé la crainte”, for instance, or “Que ne puis-je expirer après ce coup funeste?”. Lully died in March 1687, a few months after the première, leaving Achille et Polyxène unfinished. © Aparté

Kaleidoscope

Fatma Said

Classical - Released September 2, 2022 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
The 20 tracks on Kaléïdoscope reveal the many facets of Fatma Saïd’s vibrant personality. The soprano—whose first album, El Nour, was so well received it was awarded a Qobuzissime—takes on multiple vocal characters, each equally joyful and delivered in her signature velvety tone. She creates a rich musical landscape, bursting with beautiful pieces from the likes of Offenbach, Massenet, Weill and Gardel. When it comes to the singer’s choice of repertoire, she states: “Since I was very young, dance has accompanied me everywhere, and I’ve learnt a number of different styles. […] While researching potential repertoire for this album, I found myself drawn to songs from a number of very different countries and peoples, all with strong dance elements—sometimes in the words, but invariably in the music. It’s hard to imagine music without dance, or dance without music. For me, both are inseparable.”Fatma Saïd completely lets go in this album, and it’s a pleasure to experience the feeling of weightlessness that seems to guide each of these tracks. It’s also wonderful to hear the evolution of her operetta registers, particularly in the bolero from Massenet’s La Fiancée en loterie with its delicious Hispanic flavour. Kaléidoscope documents the singer’s craft remarkably well, as well as the acting dimension that accompanies it. Saïd’s voice adapts perfectly to every mood and style: unhurried in the Barcarolle from Contes d’Hoffmann, jubilant in I Could Have Danced All Night (an impressive track from the film My Fair Lady) and mysterious and restrained in Youkali. She even offers a stunning yet unexpected jazzy digression with Cheek to Cheek. Far from being just one more album in a vast catalogue, Kaléïdoscope is a spectacular portrayal of this Egyptian singer. And what a singer she is! © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz

Songs of Hope: The Essential Joe Hisaishi Vol. 2

Joe Hisaishi

Classical - Released August 20, 2021 | UNIVERSAL MUSIC LLC

Hi-Res
In order to fully satisfy the fans of some of the cult films with soundtracks by Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi, this XXL compilation includes extracts of soundtracks from some feature films which were already released in a 2020 volume (Dream Songs). Thus, the Kids Return theme is offered here in a live version with a larger band than in the previous outing, and the main theme of the music from Kikujiro is played here on the marimba (Summer). In addition to these two Takeshi Kitano classics, the listener is treated to the haunting melody of Miyazaki's iconic Porco Rosso cartoon—with a jazzy second half that echoes the Roaring Twenties, which form the backdrop to the film. Such a rich compilation is what is needed to really convey all the protean talent of an artist who can compose a rousing tango à la Astor Piazzolla (Tango X.T.C.), as well as minimalist music in the style of Steve Reich (DA-MA-SHI-E), and a concertante piece with a vibrant neo-romanticism (View of Silence). The present album also highlights a number of pieces from the Piano Stories project—a collection of the Maestro's records launched in 1988: the gravity of the Nocturne or the tender and mysterious Lost Sheep on the Bed. The album includes two unreleased tracks: a live version of Hana Bi and, as an opener, a new version of Kids Return (Angel Doll). © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

Jeanne Leleu, une consécration éclatante, Vol. 1: Musique de chambre et mélodies

Marie-Laure Garnier

Chamber Music - Released January 26, 2024 | La Boîte à Pépites

Hi-Res Booklet
The small label La boîte à pépites investigates the music of women composers, all of them so far from France. Introduced by appealing cover drawings, they explore a single composer in depth, often devoting more than one volume to the same figure. Here, Jeanne Leleu is featured on the first volume of what is to become a multi-volume series. The songs and chamber music here are early works, but they already reveal a distinctive voice from Leleu, who, as a child piano prodigy, gave the world premiere of Ravel's Ma mère l'oye and won the Prix de Rome in 1923 for her cantata Béatrix. There is little evidence of contemporary trends, but neither is Leleu's music derivative of anyone else's. The opening Quartet for violin, viola, cello, and piano has a lovely quiet and lyrical tone sustained over its three movements. Perhaps the highlights are the Six Sonnets de Michel-Ange ("Six Sonnets of Michelangelo"), which also exist in an orchestral version; they receive standout performances from soprano Marie-Laure Garnier, who is agile in catching the turns Leleu brings to the sonnet form. The finale En Italie piano pieces are colorful programmatic works, never obvious. Pianist Célia Oneto Bensaid and the other performers deliver clean readings, keeping in mind the label's goal of putting the composer at the center of each release. One anxiously awaits further volumes devoted to Leleu, who wrote a good deal of music in larger forms.© James Manheim /TiVo

Oh, ma belle brunette

A Nocte Temporis - Reinoud Van Mechelen

Classical - Released May 27, 2022 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
The term "brunette" refers not only to a young woman with brown hair, but also to a musical form that was highly fashionable from the late seventeenth century to the early eighteenth. The genre evolved from the air de cour, extremely popular in France since the beginning of the seventeenth century. The compositional process, however, remained very similar: to write a short, tender song, dealing with themes of love or nature, which could be sung alone or accompanied by a harmonic instrument. The late seventeenth century also saw the appearance of an instrument that soon became a favourite of composers and amateur musicians: the German flute, now called the traverso or Baroque flute. In this new programme, tenor Reinoud van Mechelen, flautist Anna Besson and A nocte temporis present an anthology of airs and brunettes ranging from the most touching song to the heartiest drinking song (air à boire). © Alpha Classics
