Noël: Les plus beaux chants traditionnels français

Chours d'Enfants Da Capo

Classical - Released January 1, 2002 | Pavane Records

As lovely as much of the music is, it's hard to recommend Noël: Chants traditionnels français, sung by Choeurs d'Enfants Da Capo, without reservation. The primary problem is with the acoustic; on most of the tracks there's a very low hum that's frequently loud enough to be a serious distraction and it's an aural relief when it goes away in the brief pauses between tracks. Another consideration is whether or not the listener finds the instrumentation of the accompaniment -- organ, flute, and accordion -- charmingly quirky or in dubious taste. The songs chosen are among the best-known French carols, including a few international favorites like Silent Night (Douce Nuit). The young singers are talented amateurs, but this is not a children's choir of the first rank; this especially apparent in the solos. Again, this fact may or may not be a deterrent to listeners; it's easy to be charmed by the innocence and artlessness of the performers, but fans of absolutely pure tone and impeccable intonation may not find this CD to their liking. Apart from the issue of sound quality, the artistic considerations of the performance will determine whether or not a particular listener will be pleased with this collection. © TiVo

Berlioz: L'enfance du Christ, Op. 25

Sir Andrew Davis

Sacred Oratorios - Released March 1, 2019 | Chandos

Hi-Res Booklet
Berlioz wrote his own text for L’Enfance du Christ, which he composed in 1853 and 1854. It was first performed at the Salle Herz, Paris on 10 December 1854, with Berlioz conducting. He described the work as a "Trilogie sacrée". The first of its three sections depicts King Herod ordering the massacre of all newborn children in Judaea; the second shows Mary, Joseph, and Jesus setting out for Egypt to avoid the slaughter, having been warned by angels; and the final section portrays their arrival in the Egyptian town of Saïs where they are given refuge by a family of Ishmaelites. Berlioz was not religious as an adult but remained all his life susceptible to the beauty of the religious music that had enraptured him as a child. © Chandos

Luigi Cherubini: Les Abencérages

Orfeo Orchestra

Classical - Released November 11, 2022 | Bru Zane

Hi-Res Booklet
Cherubini's Les Abencérages, premiered in 1813, heralds the spectacle and extravagance of Romantic grand opera. From the Alhambra gardens to the battlefield, the action skillfully intertwines political conspiracies with a love story. Underpinned by the energy and timbres of period instruments, this recording demonstrates the work's modernity and it's musical qualities. Anaïs Constans valiantly tackles the demanding role of Noraïme, while Edgaras Montvidas displays his lyric tenor voice in a series of sublime airs whose beauty was already hinted at by none other than Roberto Alagna in a recital disc released in 2003. Around this couple, a plethoric cast of soloists (Dolié, Sargsyan, Williams, Martin, Lavoie, etc.) achieves the same high standards of French diction and style. The Hungarian conductor György Vashegyi, flanked by the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra, reveals here another key milestone of French Romantic opera. © Bru Zane

Des visages des figures

Noir Désir

Rock - Released January 1, 2001 | Universal Music Division Barclay

Des Visages des Figures, the sixth studio album by French bad-boy guitar band Noir Désir, turned out to be their last. It was released in 2001 and featured a considerably quieter and more stripped-down version of Noir Désir's brand of fiery and angular guitar rock. The album went to number one in France, was certified double platinum, and brought the band two French Victoires de la Musique awards for best rock album and best video. The latter was awarded to their collaboration with Manu Chao entitled "Le Vent Nous Portera."© Sergey Mesenov /TiVo
