Le Concert des Oiseaux. Vincent Bouchot: Le Carnaval des animaux en péril

La Rêveuse

Classical - Released February 10, 2023 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
Several famous pieces of music based on birdsong appeared in the 19th and 20th centuries; those by Saint-Saëns, Britten, and Ravel are here, although Messiaen is not. However, the affinity between music and birdsong had been explored for centuries before that, and the early music group La Rêveuse here provides some delightful examples. The always pictorial François Couperin is represented, as is Rameau, but other composers are less familiar but no less charming. Sample the works by Theodor Schwartzkopff, Michel Blavet, and especially Michel Pignolet de Montéclair (1667-1737), whose "Les Ramages" ("The Songs") names a group of birds and then illustrates their songs. Then there are historical-instrument versions of Saint-Saëns, Britten, and Ravel. One may accept this idea or not, but even in the latter case, they don't do much to dent the charm of the whole. The program ends with a work by contemporary composer Vincent Bouchot, Le Carnaval des animaux en péril, a kind of a take-off on Saint-Saëns for the Anthropocene era that also calls forth a striking variety of instruments from La Rêveuse. Another questionable idea is that, in keeping with the practices of this group, recorded birdsong is heard between some of the tracks. Whatever aspects of this release might be doubtful, it rarely fails to bring a smile. © James Manheim /TiVo

Vierne: Complete Piano Works, Vol. 1

Sergio Monteiro

Classical - Released October 22, 2021 | Naxos

Hi-Res Booklet
Louis Vierne is renowned as one of the most brilliant of all French organ composers. His piano works are little known despite their colourful, imaginative and inspiring treatment of the instrument. The early Deux Pièces owe their lyrical style to Mendelssohn, while the Suite bourguignonne exudes an atmosphere of joie de vivre and romantic contentment. Impressionism can be heard in the Trois Nocturnes, the third of which is considered one of Vierne’s masterpieces with its evocative use of birdsong, while the shadows of war echo in the solemn Poème des cloches funèbres. This is the first of two albums covering repertoire that deserves a place in the pantheon of French piano music. © Naxos

L'univers de l'orgue (Volume 1)

Henri-Charles Caget

Classical - Released April 13, 2010 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Distinctions Diapason d'or
Ugab, the name of a series of organ recordings on the Alpha label, is a Hebrew word from the Psalms thought to mean an instrument that was a forerunner of the organ. The aim of the series is to highlight a variety of the great organs of the world in repertoire for which they are especially well suited with an emphasis on their physical setting and to offer copious photographs of the organ and its setting to provide a visual as well as aural experience. This first installment features the organ of the church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Cintegabelle, in southern France. Judging from the recording, it's a magnificent instrument, with vast timbral variety, housed in a space with a clean but nicely reverberant acoustic. Yves Rechsteiner plays an eccentric but thoroughly engaging program: transcriptions he has made of music from the operas of Rameau, some including percussion and some requiring a third hand. The operas are appropriate material because they date from around the time the organ was built and consecrated in the mid-18th century. The brief pieces are mostly arrangements of dances from the operas, but also include airs, a chorus, and an overture. The music is largely sprightly, light-hearted, and elegant, and some of it, like the selections from the comedy Platée, is gleefully silly, but there are several contemplative airs that use the most delicate registrations. These selections don't represent the Baroque at its most profound, but they are unfailingly delightful, played with exceptional grace and style. Rechsteiner's arrangements (the theory and execution of which are discussed in great depth in the program notes) make inventive use of the array of the instrument's sonorous possibilities, and the album is notable for the colorful range of the registrations. Percussionist Henri-Charles Caget and "third hand" Vincent Bernhardt provide capable support on several tracks. The sound of Alpha's SACD, which can be played on conventional systems but was designed for optimal effect to be played in surround sound, is clear and spacious.© TiVo

Debussy: Complete Works for Piano, Vol. 1

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet

Classical - Released May 1, 2007 | Chandos

Hi-Res
Brilliantly played, charismatically interpreted, and superbly recorded, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet's disc coupling both Debussy's Books of Préludes has everything going for it. The last discovery of Georg Solti and protégé Pierre Boulez, Bavouzet has a huge technique, a variegated tone, and a commanding personality, and he plays these super virtuoso works without missing a note. Some might miss the poetry of Les sons et les parfums tournent dans l'air du soir or the sensuality of La fille aux cheveux de lin, or the mystery of Canope or the whimsy of Hommage à S. Pickwick, Esq. P.P.M.P.C., but no one could complain that Ce qu'a vu le vent d'Ouest isn't breathtaking, La cathédrale engloutie isn't awe-inspiring, Les fées sont d'exquises danseuses isn't enchanting, and Feux d'artifice isn't intoxicating. With the encore of Les soirs illuminés par l'ardeur du charbon -- an ephemeral yet effecting work Debussy wrote for the charcoal dealer who kept him warm in frigid winter of 1916-1917 that came to light only in 2001 -- Bavouzet's disc becomes a necessary addition to any Debussy collection aspiring to completeness. Recorded in 2006 by Ralph Couzens in Potton Hall in Dunwich, Suffolk, using a Steinway Model D owned by S.E. Foster, these performances sound fresh and sonorous.© TiVo
