The Fellini Album - The Film Music of Nino Rota

Riccardo Chailly

Cinema Music - Released June 7, 2019 | Decca Music Group Ltd.

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or
What a pleasure it is to return to Riccardo Chailly, at the head of the Filarmonica della Scala, with a collection on Rota (1911-1979) and more particularly his songs written for the great films of Fellini such as Amarcord, Huit et Demi, and La Dolce Vita! Before him, another Riccardo, Muti, had dedicated, in the 1990s, two albums with Sony Classical to the film scores of the Italian composer – with one collection on his non-cinematographic corpus. Whether Rota’s music was for cinema or the concert hall was of little importance as he rolled out, to the likes of Bernard Herrmann in the United States, a style that was true to himself where one feels his genius and prowess for evoking ambiance mixed with an incredible dexterity for the most diverse genres, as can be heard in Suite taken here from La Dolce Vita. The beginning (O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia) of the following Il Casanova di Federico Fellini, in which the chiming of the pendulum evokes the tragic destiny of the character and the harmonization of somber colors creates a sea-like atmosphere, remains without a doubt one of the most striking tracks on the album. This ambiance returns in the final part, this time all the more mind-blowing (The Dancing Doll). Often influences from the East, of Chostakovitch and Khachaturian (Il Duca di Württenberg), can be heard along with more meridian styles inherited from Italian symphonists from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. A passionate album not to be missed. © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz

Good Night !

Bertrand Chamayou

Classical - Released October 9, 2020 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or
Pianist Bertrand Chamayou's Good Night! takes its title from one of the numbers of Leoš Janáček's From an Overgrown Path, which opens the program. It's appropriate, for the entire program consists of works capturing the moment when sleep comes. They go by the names of lullaby, berceuse, wiegenlied, and more, but they have are consistent in tone, and listeners in search of an album with which to unwind and even to fall asleep to will be satisfied here. The program is very artfully constructed so as to deepen the mood with each piece. (That is, until Helmut Lachenmann's Wiegenmusik, a modernist work that may wake one right up again.) There are some familiar examples of the genre from Liszt, Brahms (the "Brahms Lullaby," in an arrangement by Max Reger), and Chopin, but also lesser-known works by Sergei Lyapunov, the worth-knowing female composer Mel Bonis, and Bryce Dessner, whose entrancing Song for Octave confirms that he has moved definitively beyond being included on programs simply to draw in rock music fans. However, it's Chamayou's playing that ties the whole thing together; he keeps the music at a low but constant intensity and has remarkable control throughout. This is an ideal gift for those with a new baby, or really for anyone else.© TiVo

Bizet : Roma & Other Orchestral Works (HD 24/96.00)

Jean-Luc Tingaud

Classical - Released March 3, 2015 | Naxos

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason
Apart from the opera Carmen, the Symphony in C major, and the suites of incidental music for the play L'Arlésienne, the music of Georges Bizet tends toward the obscure, despite its great tunefulness and obvious technical competence. For this CD, Jean-Luc Tingaud and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra present two of the more significant minor works, the Roma Symphony and the Petite Suite, along with several shorter pieces that are infrequently played. The Overture in A major and the Marche funèbre in B minor are neglected because they are early works, though they are no worse than many French orchestral pieces of the time, and Bizet's knack for writing memorable melodies lifts them above mediocrity. The jaunty Patrie Overture has had a better track record with modern audiences and is often encountered as filler on recordings and on pops concerts. An orchestral version of five piano pieces from the collection Jeux d'enfants, the Petite Suite is usually paired on recordings with the Symphony in C major because of its similar lightheartedness. In the end, Roma is the most substantial work offered here, and Bizet's flair for dramatic scene painting and dark passions is on full display, anticipating the volatile atmosphere of Carmen. The performances of all the selections are first-rate, and this album is recommended for anyone who is curious about Bizet's less familiar music.© TiVo

Serge Gainsbourg

French Music - Released November 16, 1973 | Universal Music Division Mercury Records

Hi-Res
Serge Gainsbourg's fascination with the noisier bodily functions has been well-documented, both by his biographers and by his own records. Who else, after all, would commission Sly & Robbie to lay down their earthiest, dubbiest reggae rhythm, then punctuate it with nonstop farting noises ("Evguenie Sokolov" from 1981's Mauvaises Nouvelles des Etoiles album)? Who else would write a novel about a gas-stricken painter who turns his body-burps to his artistic advantage? And whose else could conceive an album dedicated in its near-entirety to...well, the song titles tell that story: "La Poupee Qui Fait" translates as "The Doll That Goes to the Toilet," the title track documents the messier consequences of anal sex, and "Des Vents, des Pets, des Boums" means, simply, "Wind, Farts, Booms." "Titicaca" is, of course, smuttily self-explanatory. So, it's dirty, filthy, scatological fun, but it's all wrapped so smoothly, so sweetly, and so irresistibly seductively that even the backing musicians -- a team of crack English musicians led by Alan Hawkshaw -- were not aware what he was singing about. The melodies are as lush as any, the performances as immaculate, and the soundscapes as varied. Vu de l'Exterieur ranges from gentle rock to mild funk, from dreamy ballads to heart-stopping tunefulness, and it's all delivered so romantically straight-faced that one cannot help but shudder for all those suave non-French-speaking lotharios who woo their ladies with low lights and Gainsbourg. "Sensuelle et Sans Suite" might feel like a beautiful Beatlesque ballad, but that's where the resemblance ends. Lyrically, it laments -- you guessed it -- the barrage of flatulence that bedeviled a one-night stand. It is a joyful album and one of Gainsbourg's best, edging the critically acclaimed (but possibly overrated) Melody Nelson and possibly nudging Aux Armes Etcaetera. And higher praise than that would be difficult to find.© Dave Thompson /TiVo

Love Me Please Love Me

Michel Polnareff

Pop - Released January 1, 1966 | Universal Music Division Barclay

Distinctions The Qobuz Ideal Discography
This early work by French performer Polnareff is a varied and not too impressive grouping of ten songs, all of which he wrote or co-wrote, usually singing in French (though occasionally in English). Various hues of circa-1966 pop/rock, folk-rock, and French sentimental pop are explored and combined by the singer/songwriter, whose vocal range is wide but not to everyone's liking. Sometimes he sings gentle, pleasantly (though not memorably) melodic folk-rock ("Sous Quelle Etoile Suis Je Ne?"); at others, period British-influenced mod pop ("Time Will Tell"); at others, in a more Continental crooning style ("Ballade Pour Toi"). At times he leaps into an almost yodeling falsetto that is a little annoying; on "Time Will Tell," he sounds a bit as if he's trying to leap into Lou Christie territory, though he ends up closer to Bobby Vinton's ear-piercing high parts from "Mr. Lonely." The title track, "Love Me, Please Love Me," is a low point with its groveling romanticism and extensive repetitions of that semi-yodeling falsetto, though "Ballade Pour un Puceau" manages to do even worse with its nasal-megaphone, "Winchester Cathedral"-like vaudevillianisms. On the other hand, "You'll Be on My Mind" is almost punky Bo Diddley-styled rock, and "La Poupee Qui Fait Non" might be the most familiar tune to British Invasion collectors, as it was covered by the Birds in the U.K. (though not issued until 1999). Procol Harum fans might want to seek this out for two obscure songs on here that Polnareff penned with Procol Harum lyricist Keith Reid, the aforementioned "Time Will Tell" and "You'll Be on My Mind."© Richie Unterberger /TiVo
