Lully: Acis et Galatée

Les Talens Lyriques

Opera - Released October 14, 2022 | Aparté

Hi-Res Booklet
Composed on 1686 as part of the festivities organised by the Duc de Vendôme in honour of the Grand Dauphin, during the latter’s visit to his estate at the Château d’Anet in September of that year, Acis et Galatée is Lully’s last complete opera. His faithful librettist Quinault having retired from writing for the stage, he collaborated this time with the poet Campistron on a work that tells the story of the love between the sea-nymph Galatea and the shepherd Acis – a love threatened by the violence of the jealous cyclops Polyphemus. This opera, an undoubted dramatic success, gives the orchestra an important part, expressively evoking, for example, the giant’s cries of anger, the terror of the chorus, and the lovers’ hasty flight in Act III. It includes some magnificent pieces, including the final Passacaille, as well as inventive treasures, such as duet for hautes-contre (high tenors) “Ah! je succombe au tourment qui m'accable”, or the burlesque march that accompanies the entry of Polyphemus and his fellow cyclopes, conveying their uncouthness. But the loveliest pieces in the score are for Galatea: “Enfin, j’ai dissipé la crainte”, for instance, or “Que ne puis-je expirer après ce coup funeste?”. Lully died in March 1687, a few months after the première, leaving Achille et Polyxène unfinished. © Aparté

Véronique Gens

Classical - Released April 3, 2020 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
As the symbiosis between the art of the poet and that of the composer, the French mélodie became the jewel of the salons of the ‘Belle Époque’. By placing a string quartet and a piano around the singer, Chausson’s Chanson perpétuelle, Lekeu’s Nocturne and Fauré’s La Bonne Chanson oscillate between chamber musical intimacy and orchestral ambition. Alongside these famous pioneering pieces, this programme devised by the Palazzetto Bru Zane champions a return to the art of transcription, so popular in the nineteenth century, with the aim of expanding the repertory for voice, strings and piano in order to unearth some forgotten treasures. Hence Hahn, Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Massenet, La Tombelle, Ropartz, Louiguy and Messager all appear in a programme whose guiding thread is the emotions of nocturnal abandonment: the charms of twilight, the trajectory of dreams, the terror of nightmare or the exhilaration of festive occasions. Alexandre Dratwicki has made these arrangements in the style of the nineteenth century. Appropriately enough, the programme ends with La Vie en rose, for this music offers a kaleidoscope of all the colours of human feeling. The texture of solo strings and piano sets Véronique Gens’s incomparable storytelling artistry in a new ligh. © Alpha Classics

Sans attendre

Céline Dion

French Music - Released November 2, 2012 | Columbia

Hi-Res Distinctions The Qobuz Ideal Discography
For her first album in five years, Céline Dion returns to her native French, cutting a moody collection called Sans Attendre. Perhaps it is the relatively diminished commercial expectations of a French-only album but there's an appealing small-scale aspect to Sans Attendre; certainly it is melodramatic but it is not garishly bombastic. The production is relatively restrained and, in turn, it gives plenty of space for Dion to grandstand on these tales of heartbreak, aging, and death. These aren't songs of love; they're songs of loss, and while there is certainly an affectation to Dion's performance, there's also genuine pathos and the small scale of Sans Attendre makes for one of her better albums of recent memory.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Rameau: Les fêtes d'Hébé, RCT 41

Orfeo Orchestra

Opera - Released May 20, 2022 | Glossa

Hi-Res Booklet
This album offers a fresh take on the fruitful collaboration between Hungarian conductor György Vashegyi and the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles (CMBV). Recorded in Budapest after a series of concerts in Europe (under the artistic supervision of Benoît Dratwicki, conductor of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles), this new version of Jean-Phillipe Rameau’s Les Fêtes d’Hébé (ou Les talents lyriques) doesn’t only offer the opera-ballet in its entirety, but also includes the original two versions of the Deuxième entrée.Little is known about how this work was created or the circumstances it was created in, but it was an immediate and lasting success. It was performed a total of 341 times, a substantial number for its time. However, the piece was plagued by a rather poor libretto, which led to the opera-ballet being reworked several times with changes being made to both the music and the lyrics. Despite being a little inconsistent, the work still contains some very moving arias and heroic music that’s full of energy and vigour (particularly in Deuxième Entrée, revised by Rameau). Here, György Vashegyi, the Orfeo Orchestra and the Purcell Choir (alongside an incredible cast featuring Chantal Santon-Jeffery, Marie Perbost and Reinoud Van Mechelen to name but a few) offer us an unpublished version of this rare work. This new recording benefits from the latest musicological research and a new edition of the work provided by the Société Jean-Philippe Rameau, a partner of CMBV. This is just one more advancement in our understanding of French baroque music. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Bien que l'amour… Airs sérieux et à boire

William Christie

Classical - Released April 1, 2016 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or - Choc de Classica
With this anthology of airs sérieux and airs à boire of the Grand Siècle, Les Arts Florissants launches a new series on harmonia mundi. We may listen to the tracks on this disc as contemporaries turned the pages of successful collections of songs alternating between invocations to Bacchus and invitations to love. Around William Christie at the harpsichord and his musicians, five singers offer multiple combinations of close-knit voices. From the intimacy of the salons to the liveliness of court banquets, these airs, models of refined skill, make light of the paradoxes of our hearts – for as an air by Lambert tells us: ‘Though Love creates all my grief, / I wish to love and to die loving.’ (Editor's Note)

Bizet, Saint-Saëns, Massenet, Gounod, Verdi...

Anita Rachvelishvili

Opera Extracts - Released March 2, 2018 | Sony Classical

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 Sterne Fono Forum Jazz
It's one of those fairy stories that the world of lyrical music likes to keep secret. Still an unknown and barely emerged from the La Scala Lyrical Academy, Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili was given the title role in Carmen by Baremboim, alongside Jonas Kaufman: an international career seemed to beckon for the young singer. And so here we will hear some of opera's great tunes, including, of course, the hits from Carmen, but also the two great arias from Samson et Dalila by Saint-Saëns, a pair from Verdi, a touch of Mascagni, some Rimski – less-frequently performed, it is true – and a rarity from his compatriot Dimitri Arakishvili (1873-1953) whose style is solidly anchored in the Russia of his day, with several, probably regional, twists. Since 2009, she has sung Carmen's role around three hundred times, and we can only hope that she never gets bogged down in it - and takes on Santuzza, Eboli, Dalil: in other words, the great characters of the dramatic mezzo repertoire. © SM/Qobuz
