Que ta tête fleurisse toujours

MIKA

French Music - Released November 30, 2023 | Universal Music Division Island Def Jam

Hi-Res
Given that his parents are of American and Lebanese heritage and he's spent significant parts of his life in England and Italy, Mika could be seen as a citizen of the world. However, it's not surprising that France holds a special place in his heart. It's where he spent his earliest years, where he began writing songs and learned to play the piano, and where his albums consistently place in the Top Ten of the charts. That France has been so important to his life and career makes it somewhat remarkable that Mika waited until his sixth album to release a record of songs sung entirely in French, but Que ta tête fleurisse toujours is a loving tribute to his roots in more ways than one. He named the album for a phrase his mother often said to him while growing up ("may your head always bloom"). Though she passed in 2021, the music she inspired is more uplifting than mournful, with the tenderness of "30 Secondes" and "Passager" coming through clearly even to listeners who don't speak a word of French. He complements these pensive moments with pulsing ones like "C'est la Vie" and "Touche Touche," where the pounding pianos and synths, disco rhythms, and falsetto vocals are unmistakably Mika. He rounds out the album with some skillful homages to classic French pop, such the string-laden daydream of "Moi, Andy et Paris" and the stylishly bittersweet "Jane Birkin," a much more restrained celebrity homage than his breakthrough single "Grace Kelly." By Mika's usual standards, Que ta tête fleurisse toujours may be understated, but its delicate ballads and feather-light pop make it a patisserie-worthy confection.© Heather Phares /TiVo

Unforgettable... With Love

Natalie Cole

Jazz - Released September 10, 1991 | Craft Recordings

Hi-Res
A major change of direction for Natalie Cole, Unforgettable found the singer abandoning the type of R&B/pop she'd been recording since 1975 in favor of jazz-influenced pre-rock pop along the lines of Nat King Cole's music. It was a surprising risk that paid off handsomely -- both commercially and artistically. Naysayers who thought that so radical a change would be commercial suicide were proven wrong when the outstanding Unforgettable sold a shocking five million units. Quite clearly, this was an album Cole was dying to make. Paying tribute to her late father on "Mona Lisa," "Nature Boy," "Route 66," and other gems that had been major hits for him in the 1940s and early '50s, the 41-year-old Cole sounds more inspired than she had in well over a decade. On the title song, overdubbing was used to make it sound as though she were singing a duet with her father -- dishonest perhaps, but certainly enjoyable. Thankfully, standards and pre-rock pop turned out to be a primary direction for Cole, who was a baby when the title song became a hit for her father in 1951.© Alex Henderson /TiVo

Don't Smoke In Bed

Holly Cole

Jazz - Released January 1, 1993 | Blue Note Records

Holly Cole explores a number of styles on her second album, Don't Smoke in Bed, without overreaching her grasp. Adding pop, blues, country, and a French ballad to her standard, low-key jazz, Cole demonstrates that not only does she have impeccable taste, but she has the talent to make all of the material sound convincing.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

On ne change pas (Deluxe Version)

Céline Dion

French Music - Released September 30, 2005 | Epic

No doubt a companion piece to 1999's All the Way: A Decade of Song, On Ne Change Pas is a two-disc compendium of the other, mildly overlooked phase of Celine Dion's career: her performances sung entirely in her native tongue of Québecois French. While she soared up charts all over the globe with her hits sung in English, she also amassed quite a back catalog of hits ranging from dance-pop-friendly numbers to her familiar ground of passionate, melodramatic ballads. For those unfamiliar with this portion of her career (or for those who don't speak French), getting past the roadblock of not being able to understand the subject material will lead to a greater, more holistic appreciation of the depth and prolific output of her career in such a short span. At two discs, it's also a bit much Dion for anyone to swallow in one sitting, but on the plus side there are also a few new tracks, including her duet with Il Divo, "I Believe in You."© Rob Theakston /TiVo

Music Is Life

Dave McMurray

Jazz - Released May 18, 2018 | Blue Note Records

Hi-Res
A good contact goes a long way. Don Was being the boss at Blue Note, he didn’t have to think long before signing Dave McMurray who had been his saxophonist in the band Was (Not Was)… Despite their bond and this new hierarchical link, the label’s president left his recruit completely free for this delightful Music Is Life. “I know Dave plays extremely well, Don Was explained. There’s no bullshit with him! He’s not the kind of musician who just drops his plans gratuitously to impress everyone. It’s only sincerity with him.” To construct his album’s repertoire, Dave McMurray decided to combine original compositions with a few well-chosen, at times surprising covers like George Clinton’s Atomic Dog, the White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army and even Johnny Hallyday’s Que je t’aime! With bassist Ibrahim Jones and drummers Ron Otis and Jeff Canady on his sides, he mixes frontal and percussive jazz with corrosive soul and gritty blues music. His saxophone starts from the guts, and aims right back for them! A proper chameleon (he played with B.B. King, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Hallyday, Gladys Knight, Albert King, Nancy Wilson, Bootsy Collins, Herbie Hancock, Geri Allen, Bob James and countless others), he manages to retain his own voice, no matter the partition he tackles. © Clotilde Maréchal/Qobuz

Comme un boomerang

Serge Gainsbourg

French Music - Released January 1, 2011 | Universal Music Division Mercury Records

Released to coincide with the 20th anniversary of his death in 1991, Best of Gainsbourg: Comme un Boomerang is a two-CD retrospective featuring 47 tracks plucked from the extensive back catalog of France's most notorious musical enfant terrible, Serge Gainsbourg. One of hundreds of compilations that have attempted to summarize the unashamed provocateur's 40-year recording career, this Wrasse Records release is perhaps the most comprehensive since 2006's Anthologie, taking in material from his 1958 debut album, Du Chant a la Une!... ("Le Poinconneur des Lilas") right up to his 1987 swan song, You're Under Arrest (his cover version of Edith Piaf's "Mon Legionnaire"). With a track list helpfully compiled in chronological order, Comme un Boomerang showcases his ability to effortlessly shift musical direction, from the Boris Vian-inspired traditional French chanson "La Recette de l'Amour Fou," to the bohemian jazz of "Black Trombone," to the psychedelic guitar pop of "L'Hotel Particulier," to the Sly & Robbie-produced reggae of "Aux Armes et Cetera" (his controversial interpretation of the French national anthem), and to the sultry electronica of "Sorry Angel." Alongside his signature tune, the sensual and scandalous U.K. chart-topping duet with Jane Birkin, "Je T'aime...Moi Non Plus," there are also his famous collaborations with actresses Brigitte Bardot ("Bonnie and Clyde," "Comic Strip") and Catherine Deneuve ("Dieu Fumeur de Havanes"), contributions from his series of controversial '70s concept albums, the Lolita-influenced Histoire de Melody Nelson ("Ballade de Melody Nelson") and the Nazism-based Rock Around the Bunker (the title track), and his own recording of the innuendo-laden hit he penned for Parisian yé-yé singer France Gall ("Les Sucettes"). Casual fans who might be overwhelmed by its generous track list would be better off with the more streamlined Initials S.G. (2003) or The Originals (2006), but if you want to further investigate one of pop music's most eccentric figures, Comme un Boomerang is perhaps all you'll ever need.© Jon O'Brien /TiVo
