Eclipse

Amadou & Mariam

World - Released December 9, 2022 | Because Music

Hi-Res
Eclipse is the experimental new album by Amadou & Mariam, the power couple of West African music. This album comprises a series of concerts, launched ten years ago and recorded in total darkness. This wasn’t done to save electricity but rather to share the performers’ experience of blindness. The spectators no longer focused on what they saw on the stage, just on what they could hear and feel; their ears wide open, sensitive to the atmosphere and the nuance of the music and the stories it tells. This very personal project is also conceived as an autobiographical tale, with a narrator who introduces the songs by recounting the important stages of Amadou & Mariam’s story. They met in 1975, at the Institute for Young Blind People in Bamako. They soon released their first songs in Mali but would eventually reach international fame and begin collaborating with rock stars. French rapper Oxmo Puccino has the honour of recounting Amadou & Mariam’s story in a sonic atmosphere which encapsulates the streets of Bamako. The songs performed by Amadou & Mariam follow the same chronology: from the acoustic modesty of the early days to their more recent danceable hits. The show itself featured admirable performances from producers, musicians and technicians who were obviously not accustomed to working in the dark. For the audience, both of that time and today, it’s a whole new sensory experience, immersed in the love and passions of Amadou & Mariam. Definitely worth listening to this one with your eyes closed, too. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz

L'essentiel / 1977 - 2007

Francis Cabrel

French Music - Released April 4, 2007 | Columbia

Not including compilations or live recordings, French singer/songwriter Francis Cabrel has released only 11 studio albums in his three-plus-decade career. This double-disc, 37-track best-of that covers his first three decades is not only representative of his finest work, but an essential showcase for it. The music, from his first hit single "Petite Marie" to the haunting "Je l'Aime à Mourir" and through to his slicker productions in the '80s such as "Said et Mohammed" and the funky blues of "Sarbacane," offers a portrait of the artist as restless and full of experimentation and attitude. The recordings from the '90s and the 21st century, far from reflecting the voice of a more settled songwriter, are more lyrically adventurous and musically precise, as Cabrel pared production back to reflect the organic nature of his writing. Selections such as "La Corrida," "Elle Dort," and "Vingo a Ofrecer Mi Corazón," a duet with Mercedes Sosa, reflect this shift. There are three live cuts included here, as well as a couple of soundtrack selections. In all, Essentiel 1977-2007 is a fitting representation of some of Cabrel's best work as well as an excellent introduction for those just encountering it.© Thom Jurek /TiVo

French Soul

Axelle Red

French Music - Released October 25, 2004 | Music & Roses

Released just a year after 2003's three-disc Longbox, French Soul is the second, more slimmed down retrospective from Belgian singer/songwriter Axelle Red. Its two-disc, 28-track collection covers her five studio albums, from 1993's Sans Plus Attendre ("Sensualite") to 2002's Face A/Face B ("Toujours"). While the first disc includes original versions of "Ma Priere," "Le Monde Tourne Mal," and "Bimbo a Moi," the second disc features ten soul reworkings of classic hits such as "Elle Danse Seule," "Faire des Mamours," and "Rester Femme." The album also includes a duet with French vocalist Renaud and one English-speaking track, "People Get Ready." © Jon O'Brien /TiVo
