Les marquises

Jacques Brel

French Music - Released November 17, 1977 | Universal Music Division Barclay

Hi-Res
Everyone knows the tragic context surrounding the making of this album. It is almost more famous than the content of the album itself. Having lived in the Marquesas Islands for years, Brel was already very sick when he started thinking of an opus, which will be conceived as “the last”. Once the text had been written, he took off to Paris where he entrusts the arrangements to his lifetime accomplice, François Rauber. As for rehearsals, they took place on rue de Verneuil at Juliette, Gréco’s home. The singer who wrote Ne me quitte pas knows he’s doomed when he creates Les Marquises, so it’s not really surprising to hear him talk about death and old age, like in the magnificent La Ville s’endormait and Vieillir, an overexcited tango where he hammers that “la mort, cela n’est rien” (Death is nothing). Jojo also reaches new heights of emotion, as a love letter to a deceased friend, in which Brel is only accompanied by a solo guitar. But this morbid context doesn’t make this album a formulaic spiritual quest, or even a succession of bleak tunes. Therefore, Brel puts Man above God in Le bon dieu, a humanist waltz that isn’t 1000-count but, on the contrary, serenely slow and benevolent. Marcel Azzola’s accordion works wonders here. The same serenity is displayed in Les Marquises and in Voir un ami pleurer (which owes a lot to Gérard Jouannest’s sensitive piano). The poet wishes to get away from the morbid fatality that gnaws at him, which can also be felt in the politically engaged texts, such as this hagiography of Jaurès, or Les Flamingants, a violent charge against Flemish nationalism. The testimonial aspect of this album is thus relative, and in that probably lies all of its strength. And of course, Jacques Brel’s biting and legendary humor couldn’t be missing. Let’s cite Les Remparts de Varsovie, an incredibly potent satirical sketch. Despite being sick, Brel hadn’t lost an ounce of his energy or irony, as evidenced by Le Lion, a mad fable which doesn’t know if it’s samba or circus music. Let’s note that the present release contains five bonus titles, among which La Cathédrale, one of the most radiant waltzes composed by Jacques Brel. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz

Le métèque

Georges Moustaki

French Music - Released January 1, 1969 | Universal Music Division Label Panthéon

This compilation serves as a good showcase for the work of singer/songwriter Georges Moustaki. Though Moustaki spent a decade composing for such French notables as Edith Piaf, Yves Montand, and Barbara, his solo career didn't take off until the huge success of "Le Métèque" in 1969. Like his mentor Georges Brassens, Moustaki performs mostly to the accompaniment of an acoustic guitar, occasionally adding simple string arrangements. He is very much a touring artist who has a great rapport with the audience and who finds his inspiration in different cultures from around the world. This collection features some of his greatest hits, including "Le Métèque," "Ma Liberté," "Ma Solitude," and "Joseph." Moustaki's Brazilian influences are evident in the compositions "Danse" and "Eaux de Mars"; the latter is a reworking of "Aguas de Março" by Antonio Carlos Jobim.© Yuri German /TiVo

Jacques Arcadelt : Motetti - Madrigali - Chansons

Leonardo García Alarcón

Vocal Music (Secular and Sacred) - Released August 17, 2018 | Ricercar

Hi-Res Booklet
Brought up in the French-Flamish tradition but fed with the milk of Renaissance Italian madrigalism since he was about eighteen years old, Jacques Arcadelt (1507-1568) left behind him many gems whose importance has been realized only recently. Let’s acclaim this magnificent album gathering the Chœur de Chambre de Namur, the ensemble Doulce Mémoire and the Cappella Mediterranea, to give us not the complete marigals, songs and motets by Arcadelt, of course, but a large selection of his most stupefying pieces. These are thus madrigals from his First and Fourth Books released during his Italian years around 1540, songs from the various Livres de Chansons (Books of Songs) released between 1550 and 1565 when he was living in Paris, and motets from various eras in his career—mostly Italian, a bit French too since he moved from court to court depending on the jobs, the political assassinations, the change in alliances and, generally, the implausible chaos between the various power players at the time. As a nod, we also hear an Ave Maria “according to Arcadelt”, in truth an imitation by Louis Dietsch, a composer from the 19th Century, and the comical Ave Maria d’Arcadelt … by Liszt, inspired by the Dietsch imitation, for solo organ, an exercise in returning to your ancient roots like people loved to imagine them during the Romantic era. We could even wonder if Saint-Saëns didn’t use the head of the main theme to recycle it into his ”Organ” Symphony, incidentally. © SM/Qobuz

Lamoninary: 6 Trio Sonatas, Op. 1

Jacques-Philippe Lamoninary

Chamber Music - Released April 14, 2023 | Passacaille

Hi-Res Booklet
The four musicians that make up the Hemiolia ensemble certainly made a substantial impact at the première of their Six Sonatas for 2 violins and basso continuo by Sieur Jacques-Philippe Lamoninary, born in 1707 in…Maroilles. This goes some way to explaining the humorous appearance of the eponymous cheese on the cover, inviting listeners to a gourmet and odourless tasting.Far from any arts centre, this virtuoso violinist of the 18th century had a successful provincial career which was nothing out-of-the-ordinary for the time. However, this did not prevent him from understanding and perfectly mastering the writing of this "Italian" sonata. Extremely active in Valenciennes, which enjoyed a remarkable amount of artistic activity under the Ancien Régime, Lamoninary became the first violinist at the Chapelle Saint-Pierre, one of the city’s main musical centres. His life would end on a somewhat sad note at the ripe old age of 95, in Boulogne-sur-Mer, where he made his living giving singing and violin lessons.Staying within the confines of his region, Jacques-Philippe Lamoninary certainly didn’t go down in history and his work, printed by royal privilege but little distributed, remained where he left it. The Six Sonates en trio presented here, form his opus 1, and three books would follow. They fit perfectly with the prevailing language in France at the time, with a gallant style inspired by Italian violinists, in particular that of Giuseppe Tartini. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Entre gris clair et gris foncé

Jean-Jacques Goldman

French Music - Released November 4, 1987 | Columbia

After leaving Tai Phong, Jean-Jacques Goldman's solo career gradually took off between 1981 and the release of Non Homologué, the best-selling French recording of 1986. He followed it with Entre Gris Clair et Gris Foncé in 1987, which sold even better. Part of this has to do with the ubiquitous presence of Goldman on French radio and MTV, but the rest is the sound on the recording, which balances rock dynamics with very stylized '80s production: glossy keyboards, heavily treated guitars, drum machines and programs, etc. And then there are the hooks, as evidenced in the first single "La Bas."© Thom Jurek /TiVo
