Les Paladins

Valentin Tournet

Classical - Released January 14, 2022 | Château de Versailles Spectacles

Hi-Res Booklet
The paladins, as video game aficionados know, were knights of Charlemagne's court, French counterparts to the Knights of the Round Table. In Rameau's opera, they are the basis for a broad medieval spoof that came down in bits and pieces from Ariosto through various hands, some of them unknown. Here, it receives a valuable new recording from rising young Baroque opera conductor Valentin Tournet and his vocal-orchestral group La Chapelle Harmonique. The opera, which Rameau called a tragédie lyrique, isn't quite in Monty Python territory, but at times, for instance, with the unmotivated entrance of a troupe of Chinese entertainers during a magical episode in the third act, things approach that. This was Rameau's last publicly performed opera, premiered when he was in his late 70s, and it was an uncharacteristic flop. Perhaps it was the overloaded nature of the whole thing, or perhaps the new stylistic breezes blowing in from Italy. It is, however, highly entertaining and loaded with good dance tunes and colorful orchestration. There are few recitatives, and those that do exist are tightly intertwined with the action and keep things moving. There are just a few recordings of this opera, and this one, with a sumptuous booklet and an appendix of material cut by Rameau, may emerge as the standard. It is beautifully recorded at the Palace of Versailles and conveys the scope an 18th century opera production would have had. Tournet has a strong cast, led by Sandrine Piau as the romantic lead Argie, in love with one of the Paladins but pursued as well by her guardian. (She moves over from the role of Argie's friend Nérine in one of the few earlier recordings of the work by conductor William Christie.) The various comic and dance elements come through vividly. This is a strong recording that will fill a lot of holes in Rameau collections. © TiVo

J'écoute de la musique saoûle

Françoise Hardy

French Music - Released October 16, 1978 | Parlophone (France)

Little of what Françoise Hardy recorded after the early '70s succeeded in dating well, and this LP from 1978 was one of the first of a desultory string of recordings. Produced by Gabriel Yared, J'Écoute de la Musique Saoûle places Hardy in the context of a mawkish balladeer, a position she's only rarely able to transcend with more subtle vocals. The slick, catchy title track featured Hardy purring over a variety of period effects, and "Brouillard Dans la Rue Corvisart" -- her duet with Jacques Dutronc -- is a notable lost opportunity, the song taken at a relaxed tempo that allows little of real emotion to seep through. Very occasionally, glimpses of the old, artistic Hardy can be heard; "Si Je le Retrouve un Jour" is yet another weepy ballad, though a bit of acoustic guitar allows her to sound as evocative as she did during her late-'60s peak.© John Bush /TiVo

Dumesny, haute-contre de Lully

Reinoud Van Mechelen

Classical - Released October 4, 2019 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
Reinoud van Mechelen excels in the baroque repertoire, to which he has dedicated several records from his ensemble A Nocte Temporis, also with Alpha. In this new album, the first of a trilogy which will cover Lully, Rameau and Gluck, he doesn't play the role of a fictional character, but rather of a real-life tragedian and singer who was very famous in his day: Dumesny. The latter was working in the kitchens when Lully heard his fine counter-tenor voice. As he couldn't read music, he had to learn his arias by ear. His frequently-imperfect intonation was – happily – compensated by a great talent for acting. His rare tessitura – a high tenor's voice – opened him the door into the world of French musical tragedy in the Grand Siècle. In the first segment of this three-part project, undertaken with the support of the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles, Reinoud van Mechelen sings Lully and his contemporaries (Marais, Charpentier, Desmarest, Collasse, Gervais and Destouches) with impeccable accuracy, articulation and feeling. Conceived as a tragedy for a singer, the programme contains a rich collection of arias: "cruels tourments" and "amoureuse inquiétude" form a "charmant concert" and the musicians of A Nocte Temporis lend the soloist a dramatic backing that befits the dramas weaved by his voice. This will thrill fans of the music of the Grand Siècle and baroque-lovers alike. © Elsa Siffert/Qobuz
