If You Have Ghost

Ghost

Rock - Released January 1, 2013 | Loma Vista

After simultaneously elevating and skewering the black metal scene with their riveting yet almost cartoonishly evil 2013 major-label debut, Infestissumam, Ghost B.C. (the B.C. is silent everywhere else but the United States) turned their greasepaint and pontiff hat-adorned heads to less Lovecraftian fare with If You Have Ghost, a five-track EP that should lay to rest any notion that the Swedish occult rockers are goat blood-drinking Burzum disciples. Consisting of one live cut ("Secular Haze") and four Dave Grohl-produced covers, a fittingly opulent goth pop take on Roky Erickson's "If You Have Ghosts," a surprisingly robust and muscular rendition of ABBA's "I'm a Marionette," a forgettable electro-industrial reading of Army of Lovers' "Crucified," and an even less effective, flat, and forcibly forlorn rendering of Depeche Mode's "Waiting for the Night," it's a serviceable bit of self-generated fan fiction that's as slight as it is artistically obstinate.© James Christopher Monger /TiVo

13 Commandments

Ghost

Rock - Released December 1, 2023 | UME - Global Clearing House

Download not available
Taking 2022's short EP [Message from the Clergy] one step further, Ghost released the expertly curated compilation 13 Commandments to close out their whirlwind 2023, a year that included an international tour, multiple Grammy nominations, and much more. In addition to catalog standards such as Infestissumam's "Year Zero," Meliora's "Cirice," and Prequelle's "Rats," this collection goes beyond the official LPs, providing a wider view of the band's thematic scope and melodic power. "Square Hammer," "If You Have Ghosts," and the Grammy-nominated cover of Iron Maiden's "Phantom of the Opera" show that the group's EPs are just as vital as their full-lengths, while the platinum-certified surprise viral smash "Mary on a Cross" proves that Tobias Forge and company can even score a hit with just a B-side. While these 13 tracks had been racking up hundreds of millions of streams before the compilation even came out, 13 Commandments was notable upon release for including the piano-kissed epic "Zenith," a Meliora-era rarity that had previously only been available on physical deluxe releases. Longtime fans will surely have a list of personal favorites that weren't included here, but as a document of "Ghost circa 2023," 13 Commandments is an excellent introduction to the band's catalog -- 13 lucky years into their existence -- that barely scratches the surface of what devious delights lurk in the rest of their expansive arsenal.© Neil Z. Sax A La Carter

Benny Carter

Jazz - Released January 1, 1960 | Blue Note Records

Sax ala Carter! was originally released in 1960, and as the liner notes point out, was meant for a general audience. That means that the songs are popular standards and the renditions offered here are fairly short (none reach the four-minute mark). Having said all this, one might expect Sax ala Carter! to resemble cocktail jazz, but it doesn't. Instead, the listener is treated to an intimate set made up of fine ensemble work by Carter, pianist Jimmy Rowles, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Mel Lewis on favorites like "Far Away Places," "I Should Care," and "Everything I Have Is Yours." The solos by Carter and Rowles are compact, with both players sticking close to the melody line. Nonetheless, their solos are tastefully energetic and achieve an air of grace. Standouts include a bouncy take on "All or Nothing at All" and a soulful version of "I'll Never Smile Again." The walking bass of Vinnegar also adds buoyancy to the performances on Sax ala Carter!, guaranteeing that the music is always flowing freely. The 2004 release of the album adds three bonus cuts, "Ennui" and two takes of "Friendly Islands." Incredibly, this entire album was recorded in one day on February 5, 1960. A fun treat.© Ronnie D. The Evil One

Roky Erickson

Rock - Released September 6, 2013 | Light In The Attic

Roky Erickson was very much a changed man when he re-emerged on the music scene in the late '70s after a deeply troubling stay in a mental institution following an arrest for drugs in 1969. The graceful but energetic proto-psychedelia of Erickson's music with the 13th Floor Elevators was replaced by a hot-wired straight-ahead rock sound which suggested an updated version of the teenaged garage pounders Roky recorded with his early group the Spades, and the charming psychobabble of Tommy Hall's lyrics with the Elevators gave way to twisted narratives documenting Roky's obsessive enthusiasm for cheezoid horror movies of the 1950s. It wasn't until 1980 that Erickson released his first solo album, and that disc has had a rather eventful history. Stu Cook (ex-Creedence Clearwater Revival) produced the sessions over a period of two years, and the album appeared in Europe as Roky Erickson & the Aliens (released by CBS in England, making it Roky's only major-label release to date), while in America it came out as The Evil One on the San Francisco indie 415 Records. The British and American releases featured different track lineups, and each version featured songs which didn't show up on the other; to complicate matters all the more, early versions of three of the songs were released on a small-label EP in France. His band, the Aliens, are in sharp, precise form; Erickson's vocals confirm he's a blues-rock belter of the first order (even when he's raving about creatures with atom brains, two-headed dogs, or the Evil One himself), and if the songs are a bit odd lyrically (which you would expect from the titles), the tunes are clever and punchy and rock on out. While the serene and evocative folk-rock of All That May Do My Rhyme represents Roky Erickson's strongest solo work, The Evil One shows just how strong a rocker he could be -- and how good a band he could put together. Great stuff, and certainly the best representation of Roky's "latter-day punk" period.© Mark Deming /TiVo
