Sketches for My Sweetheart The Drunk (Expanded Edition)

Jeff Buckley

Rock - Released May 26, 1998 | Columbia - Legacy

Jeff Buckley was a mess of contradictions: a perfectionist who believed in spontaneity, a man who was at once humble and vain, a musician who shunned his father's tumultuous legacy while creating one of his own. These are some of the reasons why he took his time writing and recording the material for his second album, laboring over many songs for months at a time. Given such painstaking methods, it shouldn't have been a surprise that recording was an equally fastidious process. Buckley recorded enough material for an album with producer Tom Verlaine, but deciding that the results weren't quite right, he scrapped them and moved to Memphis to record the album again. He reworked a few songs as home demos as he prepared to cut the album, but it was never made -- Buckley died in a tragic drowning accident before entering the studio. As a way to enlarge his legacy, his mother and record label rounded up the majority of the existing unreleased recordings, releasing them as the double-disc set Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk. Excepting a few awkward moments and middle-eights, it's hard to see why Buckley rejected the Verlaine productions that make up disc one. The material isn't necessarily a progression from Grace; it's more like a stripped-down, edgier take on the sweeping, jazz-tinged goth folk-rock that made the first album so distinctive. Neither the nearly finished first disc nor the homemade demos and re-recordings on the second disc offer any revelations, but that's not necessarily a disappointment. Sketches adds several wonderful songs to his catalog, offering further proof of his immense talent. And that, of course, is what makes the album as sad as it is exciting.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

2012 - 2017

Against All Logic

Electronic - Released February 17, 2018 | Other People

Few people, even among Nicolas Jaar’s fans, know that it’s actually the American-Chilean who is behind the alias A.A.L. (Against All Logic). This project, the “club” alter ego of one of the most acclaimed electronic artists of the last few years, is reminiscent of the deep house and four-on-the-floor style of his beginnings on the label Wolf + Lamb – before his experimental faze –, in which he released in 2010 one of his classics, the hit Time for Us / Mi Mujer. Good news for his nostalgic fans! 2012 - 2017 is a compilation of previously unreleased titles and is to this day the largest track collection released by Nicolas Jaar under this A.A.L. alias. And as it is often the case with the fiercely independent artist, the result is both a total surprise and a great success. Between two genuflections, kicks, synthesiser filters and old gospel samples, it will undoubtedly remind connoisseurs of the mysterious tracks Jaar has been performing in his live shows for years that have become an unavoidable topic of discussion, with the remaining question: how can we get them? © Sylvain Di Cristo / Qobuz

Buddy Holly

Buddy Holly

Rock - Released February 20, 1958 | Geffen

When Buddy Holly & the Crickets broke through nationally in 1957, they were marketed by Decca Records as two different acts whose records were released on two different Decca subsidiaries -- Brunswick for Crickets records, Coral for Holly records. But there was no real musical distinction between the two, except perhaps that the "Crickets" sides had more prominent backup vocals. Nevertheless, coming three months after The "Chirping" Crickets, this was the debut album credited to Buddy Holly. It featured Holly's Top Ten single "Peggy Sue" plus several songs that have turned out to be standards: "I'm Gonna Love You Too," "Listen to Me," "Everyday," "Words of Love," and "Rave On." The rest of the 12 tracks weren't as distinctive, though Holly's takes on such rock & roll hits as "Ready Teddy" and "You're So Square (Baby I Don't Care)" provide an interesting contrast with the more familiar versions by Elvis Presley. This was the final new album featuring Holly to be released during his lifetime. Every subsequent album was an archival or posthumous collection.© William Ruhlmann /TiVo

For You

I. Jordan

Dance - Released May 20, 2020 | Local Action

After releasing several of 2019's giddiest, most ecstatic club tracks, including "DNT STP MY LV" and "WARPER," India Jordan made a personal breakthrough with 2020's For You EP. Released shortly after the artist came out as non-binary, the EP's title is a self-dedication, and the six tracks are a celebration of their life's progression up to this point. The EP is led by "I'm Waiting (Just 4 U)," a glorious, glittery disco-house gem that places an unforgettable sample front and center, and sounds just as exuberant as any late-'90s French touch anthem. "For You" begins with thumb pianos and Orbital-esque melodies, then slides in a filtered vocal sample stating "this song's for you," blending sunny '80s electro-funk with hyped-up house. With the obvious floor-fillers placed at the front, the EP ventures into different styles for its remainder. "Emotional Melodical" has a cascading flow of lush, vibrant melodies over syncopated IDM-garage beats. The final three tracks channel some of Jordan's formative influences into something fresh and unique, particularly drawing from the energy of rave and happy hardcore but without the cheesy melodies or cartoonish vocals, as well as the subtle complexities of atmospheric drum'n'bass. "Dear Nan King" is the clearest example of this, with insistent kicks and claps, choppy breakbeats, and uplifting chords joined by the spirited sample "she's just everything to me." The music unmistakably sounds like it was born from a deep personal connection with club culture, making the EP a testament to the undying power of a lifelong engagement with dance music. © Paul Simpson /TiVo
