Beatles For Sale

The Beatles

Rock - Released December 4, 1964 | EMI Catalogue

Just in time for Christmas, Beatles For Sale arrived in record stores on December 4, 1964, with the Fab Four already international icons. The pace imposed on them is also totally inhuman. Contractually obliged to record two albums a year, perform consecutive marathon tours and appear on TV shows, it's clear that Beatlemania is at its peak. The consequences of this madness sees the Beatles include six guest appearances for this fourth studio album (Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Lieber & Stoller ...) and eight original songs. John, Paul, George and Ringo offer up rather gloomy faces on the album cover, and with titles as explicit that I'm A Loser, Baby's In Black, I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party or No Reply, they show (with grace) a darker, melancholic side than the public was perhaps accustomed to. The Beatles pass (almost) into adulthood... ©MZ/Qobuz, Translation/BM

Zappa In New York

Frank Zappa

Rock - Released October 29, 1977 | Frank Zappa Catalog

Hi-Res Booklet
Zappa in New York was recorded in December 1976 at the Palladium and originally intended for release in 1977. It was held up due to arguments between Frank Zappa and his then-record label, Warner Bros. When the two-LP set finally appeared in March 1978, Warner had deleted "Punky's Whips," a song about drummer Terry Bozzio's attraction to Punky Meadows of Angel. The Zappa band, which includes bassist Patrick O'Hearn, percussionist Ruth Underwood, and keyboard player Eddie Jobson, along with a horn section including the two Brecker brothers, was one of the bandleader's most accomplished, which it had to be to play songs like "Black Page," even in the "easy" version presented here. Zappa also was at the height of his comic stagecraft, notably on songs like "Titties & Beer," which is essentially a comedy routine between Zappa and Bozzio, and "The Illinois Enema Bandit," which features TV announcer Don Pardo.© William Ruhlmann /TiVo

A New Day Now

Joe Bonamassa

Blues - Released August 7, 2020 | J&R Adventures

Hi-Res
With A New Day Now, Joe Bonamassa revisits his debut album A New Day Yesterday. The American bluesman has even rerecorded his vocal parts. According to him, the reason behind this project relates to the lack of experience and rigour that can be heard on the original record. The first release by the young man, then aged 22, came ten years after his noteable performance as the support act for B.B. King and marked the beginning of his artistic blossoming. For Bonamassa, this retrospective album is also an homage to producer Tom Dowd, his former mentor whose demanding approach, both technically and musically, helped him to progress from a child prodigy to the best bluesman of his generation. © IF/Qobuz

Junior

Röyksopp

Dance - Released March 18, 2009 | Parlophone (France)

Makers of sophisticated dance-pop with more than enough production finesse to intrigue electronica listeners, Röyksopp complete their transition from trip-hop maestros to electronic popsters on their third album, Junior. As on 2005's The Understanding, the melodies here are unmissable, whether there's a star vocal feature or not -- and, to signal their rising status, there are several here. Karin Dreijer of the Knife returns for two songs (including the dizzyingly Moroder-like "This Must Be It"), while Robyn makes her Röyksopp debut on "The Girl and the Robot" (which may or may not be an inter-life form torch song), and Lykke Li also makes a first appearance with "Miss It So Much" (also curiously robotic, with the lyric "My mechanical heart, how it tears me apart"). Besides the stars, Anneli Drecker of Bel Canto does the heavy lifting, lending her heavenly voice to four songs. Overall, the Röyksopp duo remain stellar producers, with a good handle on the three things most important to dance-pop: bewitching melodies, intriguing effects, and enough character to find a fanbase among the non-chart-buying public. (Their old standby, back in force here, is a squelchy synth bassline that creaks and shudders as it cycles through arpeggio after arpeggio). As in the past too, many of the usual stylistic signposts are passed -- Giorgio Moroder, Daft Punk, Air. In the end, Röyksopp remain among the best at middlebrow dance-pop, crafting music that can and will rule the supermarket aisles while still having a shelf-life longer than the canned ham you'll find there.© John Bush /TiVo
