Four pianos, Four Pieces

Alexander Melnikov

Classical - Released February 9, 2018 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Gramophone Editor's Choice
"Four oeuvres, four pianos" might be a better way of looking at the cover of this album by Alexander Melnikov: Schubert is played on a (simply stunning) Viennese Graf fortepiano from around 1835, Chopin on an Érard grand piano from 1837, Liszt on a Bösendorfer from 1875 and Stravinsky on a modern-day Steinway - the only work which is not played on an instrument contemporary to its composition, as Petrushka dates from 1911, and most certainly not from 2014 like the Steinway in question! The differences between the four instruments are not immediately obvious, but Melnikov's project is to demonstrate just how closely art and instrument follow one another: the Wanderer Fantasy benefits from the clarity of the Graf fortepiano which, while it lacks powerful volume, offers a startling palette of different sounds for the artist to explore. Chopin's twelve Études Op. 10 on the Érard – still within a few years of the Graf – increased the power of the sound in particular, but at the cost of reducing the range of colours in the palette. With the Réminiscences de Don Juan by Liszt, the Bösendorfer unleashes real pianistic thunderbolts, which almost overshadows the content! Finally, Petrushka on the Steinway takes us back into a rather more familiar territory. This is a concept of pairing from Melnikov, whose fondness for historical instruments is well-known. © SM/Qobuz

Caprice

Nathanaël Gouin

Classical - Released October 13, 2023 | Mirare

Hi-Res Booklet
Pianist Nathanaël Gouin explores the caprice as it has evolved, with works that fall squarely into that form and some that, as Gouin discusses in the booklet interview, fit the mold. Gouin's phrasing and style seem best suited to the Romantic and Post-Romantic periods, and that is where he excels here, especially in the Valse-Caprice No. 2, Op. 38, of Fauré and Alkan's Le festin d'Ésope, Op. 39/12. Another draw is the premiere of Reynaldo Hahn's Mignouminek from 1943, an unpublished work that was dedicated to and later found in the library of François Lang, a pianist and collector who died in Auschwitz in 1944. There are countless recordings of Rachmaninov's Rhapsodie sur theme de Paganini, Op. 43, and this one is worth considering. The freedom associated with the caprice form is necessarily reined in owing to the presence of the orchestra here. The Sinfonia Varsovia under conductor Aleksandar Markovic is a good stylistic match with Gouin. The juxtaposition of the Rachmaninov variations with those of Brahms' first book of his Variations sur un theme de Paganini, Op. 35, for solo piano, allows listeners to hear the extra freedom given to the pianist in the Brahms. The inclusion of Bach's Caprice sur le depart de son frère bien-aimé, BWV 992, makes sense given the title and the overarching theme of the album. Gouin is less convincing in this Baroque master's work as his playing is sometimes uneven and loses a bit of momentum in the slower movements, but the quicker, lighter movements are better matched to his playing style.© Keith Finke /TiVo

Moyreau: Complete Harpsichord Music

Fernando De Luca

Miscellaneous - Released March 25, 2022 | Brilliant Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
The first-ever survey on record of the complete surviving output by a significant contemporary of Rameau: a missing piece in the jigsaw of the French Baroque. Christophe Moyreau (1700-1774) was born and died in the city of Orleans, and perhaps one reason why he never attained the fame of contemporaries such as Couperin and Rameau was that he never occupied posts in the French capital. Too much of his career is still shrouded in mystery, but he listed his occupation as "organist" in the marriage register of his home church in 1726 – becoming father to 11 children over the next 18 years – and at some point he became titular organist at the important Church of Saint-Aignan before taking up the post as organist of the cathedral in 1737. It seems to have been the lengthy restoration of the cathedral’s organ which prompted Moyreau in 1753 to gather together much of his previously composed music into six books of Pièces de clavecin. He published them in two volumes during a lengthy period of what would otherwise have been enforced inactivity; he also wrote and issued a small but influential teaching manual in the same year. The 126 separate pieces in the six books are remarkably varied in style but consistent in quality of invention. There are dances and character-pieces, organised into long suites, but also standalone overtures, sonatas and a solo concerto. The last of the suites concludes with a grand evocation of the bells of Orleans which has become his best-known work. The second volume includes six "simphonies" for harpsichord, also recorded here by Fernando de Luca, making this set by far the most comprehensive collection of Moyreau’s music ever released. © Brilliant Classics

Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov & Prokofiev

Tianxu An

Classical - Released January 28, 2022 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
At just 22 years old, Chinese pianist Tianxu An is one of his country's most promising virtuosos. In 2019, he gained international attention by winning the fourth prize at the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow - presided over by Denis Matsuev, who hailed his performance as "sensational at this stage of maturity" - and a special prize for "courage and restraint" (following a score error by a member of the organization). Tianxu An has already performed with the Mariinsky Orchestra under the direction of Valery Gergiev and with the China Philharmonic Orchestra under Xiaotang Xia at the Mariinsky Far East Festival; he has given recitals in Russia and China, where he toured nineteen major cities in 2021, with two of his favorite composers on the program: Rachmaninov and Prokofiev. Fittingly it is to the Russian repertoire that he dedicates his first recording. He says he is particularly attracted by the "expressiveness, emotional power and melodic freedom" of the music of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Prokofiev. © Alpha Classics

Bells

Anthony Romaniuk

Classical - Released August 28, 2020 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
An Australian pianist who studied early music, harpsichord and fortepiano in New York and Amsterdam, Anthony Romaniuk also has a passion for improvisation, independent rock and electronic music. This musical polyglot collaborates regularly with the violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja (Take Two), the vocal ensemble Vox Luminis, the tenor Reinoud Van Mechelen and the cellist Pieter Wispelwey. For his first solo album, he has spent ten years exploring almost ten centuries of music, which he has decided to play on four different keyboards: harpsichord, fortepiano, piano and Fender Rhodes. Fascinated by low sustained notes (known as ‘pedal points’, the descendants of drones) – hence the title "Bells" – Anthony Romaniuk exceeds the boundaries of classical orthodoxy, ranging from Mozart to Crumb. An incredible compendium of music and emotions that enables us to discover Rameau, Byrd, Beethoven, Debussy, Purcell in a new light. We go from Bartók’s Mikrokosmos to a fascinating medieval melody that he has harmonised like a jazzman. Thanks to the delicate timbre of the Fender Rhodes, we hear Bach quite differently, alongside Chick Corea’s magical Children’s Songs. © Alpha Classics
