Combustication

Medeski, Martin & Wood

Jazz - Released January 1, 1998 | Blue Note Records

As the only jazz band to be accepted by the neo-hippies of the HORDE '90s, Medeski, Martin & Wood pulled off the strange coup of being embraced by rock and jazz audiences, who both loved their endless improvisations. They managed to walk the fine line dividing between the two camps, as their funkified soul-jazz was self-referential and cerebral, not earthy and instinctual. That's part of the reason why some soul-jazz diehards didn't embrace MMW -- the ingredients may be there, but it just didn't taste like a real Jimmy Smith record. Perhaps conscious of this, MMW make no excuses about their heritage on their fifth album, Combustication. Perhaps because it is their first effort for a real jazz label (Blue Note), Combustication happens to be their most adventurous effort yet. Ironically, it's because the group embraces alt-rock and hip-hop conventions like turntable scratching. That ultimately turns out to be just window-dressing, however -- beneath it all, MMW's music remains essentially the same, but the handful of curve balls makes Combustication worth close listening for those already on their side.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Holy Smoke

Gin Wigmore

Pop - Released January 1, 2009 | Universal Music Australia Pty. Ltd.

Already a star in her native New Zealand, Gin Wigmore makes her global debut with the release of Holy Smoke, an album that shoots to bridge the gap between neo-soul and rock & roll. On paper, Wigmore certainly has the makings of a popular artist; she’s blonde, brazen, and named after a liquor, even if her raspy alto sounds more whiskey-soaked than gin-splashed. She also surrounds herself with some of the industry’s most competent characters, from former Ryan Adams cohorts the Cardinals (who perform every track here) to veteran producer Mike Elizondo. The combination should work -- and on rootsy barnburners like “One Last Look,” it does -- but Holy Smoke isn’t the tour de force that its cast list suggests. The problem isn’t a lack of talent; it’s an issue of incompatibility. Wigmore is a neo-soul vocalist in the tradition of Duffy and Amy Winehouse, and the Cardinals are a country-rock outfit, far more indebted to the Band than the Dap-Kings. Both sides end up playing tug of war, resulting in an album that plays to neither of their strengths. Holy Smoke could’ve benefitted from venturing into either extreme, but it forsakes the country and soul camps for a sense of neutral territory, resulting in an album that includes some sassy highlights -- Wigmore sings “Hey Ho” like she’s been smoking menthols for a decade, chastising a former lover with barbed lines like “Don’t you touch me there!” -- but doesn’t reach the heights that are surely within her reach.© Andrew Leahey /TiVo

Rogues Gallery

Slade

Pop - Released April 1, 1985 | BMG Rights Management (UK) Limited

Thanks to a pair of Quiet Riot cover versions of early Slade songs, Slade was brought to the attention of a new generation of hard rock fans, who turned around and made their first album in ten years a fair-sized hit. Aiming to capitalize on their resurgence, the boys went back into the studio to record the follow-up, Rogues Gallery, even going so far as to give opening track, "Hey Ho Wish You Well," the same galloping beat and Celtic string work that made "Run Runaway" such a great comeback. Unfortunately for everyone (most notably the band), the decision was made to lay on a whole pile of keyboards this time out, perhaps trying to tap into the success Van Halen had achieved with breakthrough album 1984; the end result was an album that was far less endearing than Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply. In fact, some of the songs are downright embarrassing, like "Walking on Water Running on Alcohol," which marries a "Be My Baby"-style big beat to Van Halen keyboards and then adds a melodramatic but ultimately sad-sack set of lyrics. Far worse is first single, "7 Year Bitch," which could have been a thoughtful look at someone who's attracted to younger women, but which kills off any chance of moral high ground with the question "...can you control the bitch?" (whether the question was asked in persona or not). Given the title of the album, perhaps such sentiments shouldn't be all that surprising, but it has to be said that the rogues' gallery concept probably would have been a lot more convincing if the music had been stripped of the keyboards and overly slick production and given more of a rock & roll edge. That edge doesn't really emerge until the track "Lock Up Your Daughters," tellingly a track that the band pulled out of the vaults.© Sean Carruthers /TiVo
