Happy Birthday Tour

Nana Mouskouri

French Music - Released March 24, 2014 | Universal Music Division Mercury Records

Whether one agrees or one has even heard of her, Nana Mouskouri is still the queen of elegant pop. This document is testament to that. Mouskouri, who has sold well over 200 million recordings internationally, was also a member of European Parliament and has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 1993. This compilation of her original Decca hits has been beautifully remastered for release to commemorate her yearlong international tour, which began on October 14, 2013 and celebrates 50 years in music internationally (though she had recorded as early as 1961, her first global hit record was in 1963). This document has songs from all of her periods with Universal-affiliated labels. The material ranges from Greek songs such as "Tora Pou Pas Stin Xenitia," composed by the great Manos Hadjidakis, to international pop songs, anthems, and standards in French, German, Italian, Spanish, and English, including Alain Goraguer's "L'Histoire de Nous," Ernesto Lecuona's "Siboney," Jerome Kern's "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," and the Harold Arlen/Yip Harburg evergreen "Over the Rainbow" (the latter two arranged by Quincy Jones), as well as her stirring version of "Amazing Grace." While this is by no means a comprehensive introduction to the singer, it is certainly a fitting one.© Thom Jurek /TiVo

Live in London

Mavis Staples

Soul - Released February 8, 2019 | Anti - Epitaph

Hi-Res
"It's kind of unbelievable to me that I’m still recording. I never thought I would still be singing at my age, and people seem to really want to hear me, they know me, they give me love - I'm just overwhelmed, really. I thank God every night before I go to bed and then again every morning for waking up." Few people would have imagined that at 79 years old Mavis Staples would still be reaching a wide audience and recording albums. Her inner strength is fully intact and this live performance at the Union Chapel in London just goes to prove it. Trump's America acts as a good source of inspiration and a powerful fuel for this voice that sings about God, love, and all the injustices and evils that surround us. She’s just as politically engaged as she was during The Staple Singers’ heyday (who were led by Pops Staples, her illustrious father) when the band released several protest songs for the Civil Rights Movement. Here, the gospel queen essentially sings songs from albums that she has released on the label ANTI since 2007. From Love and Trust by Ben Harper to Funkadelic's Can You Get to That and What You Gonna Do (which she sang during the sixties with The Staple Singers), from Let's Do It Again by Curtis Mayfield to Slippery People by Talking Heads, Mavis Staples’ voice turns everything it touches into gold. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

I Thought I Was an Alien

Soko

Alternative & Indie - Released February 17, 2012 | Babycat Records

Following a five-year hiatus in which she picked up a César Award nomination for her role in A l'Origine and declared that her musical career was "dead," 26-year-old Bordeaux chanteuse Stephanie Sokolinski, aka Soko, emerged "reborn" in 2012 with this debut full-length album, I Thought I Was an Alien. Produced by Fritz Michaud (Elliott Smith), the belated follow-up to her 2007 Not Sokute EP features 15 woozy lo-fi alt-pop songs inspired by the likes of Daniel Johnston and Leonard Cohen, including the singles "No More Home, No More Love," "First Love Never Die," and the title track, best known for its Spike Jonze-directed video.© Jon O'Brien /TiVo
