Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded

Rihanna

Pop - Released June 5, 2007 | Def Jam Recordings

Distinctions The Qobuz Ideal Discography
When you've released a pair of albums containing a few monster singles and a considerable amount of unsteady, unassured material, why mess around the third time out? From beginning to end, Good Girl Gone Bad is as pop as pop gets in 2007, each one of its 12 songs a potential hit in some territory. Unlike Music of the Sun or A Girl Like Me, neither Caribbean flavorings nor ballad ODs are part of the script, and there isn't an attempt to make something as theatrical as "Unfaithful." There is, however, another '80s hit involved: just as "SOS" appropriated Soft Cell's version of "Tainted Love," "Shut Up and Drive" turns New Order's "Blue Monday" into a sleek, forthcoming proposition, one that is as undeniable and rocking as Sugababes' 2002 U.K. smash "Freak Like Me" (a cover of Adina Howard's 1995 hit that swiped from another '80s single, Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?"). "Shut Up and Drive" is part of an all-upbeat opening sequence that carries through five songs. Rihanna knows exactly what she wants and is in total control at all times, even when she's throwing things and proclaiming "I'm a fight a man" amid marching percussion and synthesizers set on "scare" during "Breakin' Dishes." The album's lead song and lead single, "Umbrella," is her best to date, delivering mammoth if spacious drums, a towering backdrop during the chorus, and vocals that are somehow totally convincing without sounding all that impassioned -- an ideal spot between trying too hard and boredom, like she might've been on her 20th take, which only adds to the song's charm. The album's second half is relatively varied and a little heavier on acoustic guitar use, but it's not lacking additional standouts. Three consecutive Timbaland productions, including one suited for a black college marching band and another that effectively pulls the romantically codependent heartstrings, enhance the album rather than make it more scattered.© Andy Kellman /TiVo

Crazy Nights

Kiss

Rock - Released January 1, 1987 | UMe Direct 2

Hi-Res
Since Kiss' 1987 album, Crazy Nights, was their most pop-accessible album until then, a total of three video clips were issued, which are all featured on the home video of the same name. While the videos aren't exactly the best the band has ever produced, they were very popular with MTV viewers: all appeared regularly on the network's viewer request program at the time. The first video, "Crazy, Crazy Nights," is a no-frills clip of the quartet lip-syncing the anthemic song to an auditorium full of excited fans, while the second one, "Reason to Live," is a ballad that features clips of an attractive blonde seeking revenge on her unfaithful lover, Mr. Paul Stanley (!), while the band plays the song. The final clip, "Turn on the Night," is one of the album's most keyboard-heavy tracks, and follows the set-up of the second video for the most part -- a female fan is shown enjoying a concert by the band while Kiss plays away. Besides the three clips, no other footage is featured, which makes the Crazy Nights video of interest to Kiss completists only.© Greg Prato /TiVo

Contagious

Tarrus Riley

Reggae - Released August 3, 2009 | VP Records

It's a minor problem, but if there's a complaint to be made about Tarrus Riley's 2009 effort Contagious, it's that his previous effort, Parables, has a much better layout. The crowding together of redundant numbers and uneven flow experienced here makes Contagious feel more like a collection of songs than a fully thought-out album, but they are great songs for the most part, performed in that dignified, warm, Rasta manner that has made Riley a favorite of the new roots set. "Living the Life of a Gun" is a wonderfully smooth alternative to Anthony B. or Sizzla's social commentary, and when a children's choir enhances the moving prayer "Let Peace Reign," Riley skillfully moves into Wyclef's territory with elaborate arrangements hung on grand statements. The lovers' numbers are just as good, if not better this time out with the sensual take on Michael Jackson's hit "Human Nature" and the yearning "Love's Contagious" -- based on Marley's "Coming In From the Cold" riddim -- competing for the top spot. The latter features a quick fade that comes way too early for the slow-grooving song, and when you add a track list 18 songs long which doesn't seem properly sorted, the quality control is a step lower than last time out. Parables remains a better introduction, but taken on a track-by-track level, Riley delivers his high-grade material with such grace and passion that Contagious is well worth the bit of patience it requires.© David Jeffries /TiVo
