Head Above Water

Avril Lavigne

Pop - Released February 15, 2019 | BMG Rights Management (US) LLC

Hi-Res
Roughly a year after Avril Lavigne released her eponymous fifth album in 2013, she was diagnosed with Lyme disease. Her illness informs Head Above Water, which arrives six long years after Avril Lavigne -- the longest time separating Lavigne albums by far. Considering that half-decade gap and all the personal turmoil the singer endured, it scans that Head Above Water unveils a different Avril Lavigne, one who proudly bears her scars and is eager to share her journey. Head Above Water has its moments of darkness, but they're not sad, they're stirring. The album is designed to offer solace while also being a rallying call. Inspirational music, in other words, so it's not entirely surprising that its title track was serviced to Christian radio in advance of its release -- a gambit that proved successful, since "Head Above Water" went to number five on the Christian radio chart. Despite this, Head Above Water can't be called Christian music by any measure -- no album with "Dumb Blonde," a cherry bomb stomp of defiance featuring a Nicki Minaj verse could -- but its quieter, contemplative moments, of which there are many, do veer toward the aspirational pop of Rachel Platten, a sign Lavigne is no longer the mall punk of lore. Although the album is weighed heavily by ballads suited for adult contemporary radio, Lavigne fortunately peppers it with moments of levity: "Tell Me It's Over" sways with echoes of a '50s slow dance, "Crush" is so light it floats into the stratosphere, and "Bigger Wow" swells with strings reminiscent of vintage Vanessa Carlton. Such moments provide a needed contrast to the motivational ones while also connecting to Lavigne's bubblegum roots, a move that makes the overall maturation of the album feel earned.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Handel: L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato

Les Arts Florissants

Classical - Released June 23, 2023 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
Handel's L'allegro, il penseroso, ed il moderato, HWV 55, is an underrated work. Composed in 1740 as he was beginning to turn decisively toward English-language music, it was based on a pair of contrasting pastoral poems by Milton. Handel mixed these together and had his librettist, Charles Jennens (soon to write the text of Messiah, HWV 56), add a third part, Il Moderato, as a kind of synthesis at the end. It sounds thrown together, but the music is brilliant and has much in common with that of Messiah; the chorus has a lot to do, great care is taken with the accompanied recitatives, and the solos are full of tunes that are, given the chance, just as memorable as that of the famed later oratorio. The durable William Christie, 78 years old when this album appeared in 2023 and vaulted onto classical best-seller lists, generally specializes in French music with his group Les Arts Florissants, but he has been performing this ode in concert, and it is wonderful to find that he has gotten around to recording it. It is a wonderful reading that captures and highlights the dramatic contrasts in the work, which really plays to Christie's strengths in handling a complex score, selecting the right soloists who may not be at the top of the charts, and finding the excitement in unfamiliar Baroque scores. He excels across the board here. Among the soloists are a couple of standouts, soprano Rachel Redmond and boy soprano Leo Jemison. Christie takes brisk tempos, grabbing the listener's attention right at the top with the quick introduction to the recitativo accompagnato "Hence with vain deluding joys." The proportions in everything are just right, with a choir of 20 and an orchestra of 28 deployed so as to reflect vividly the contrasts in the text. Listeners unfamiliar with this work could not ask for a better introduction to it. Harmonia Mundi's sound at the Paris Philharmonie keeps the texts clear, even in densely polyphonic music. © James Manheim /TiVo

Sun Goddess

Ramsey Lewis

Jazz Fusion & Jazz Rock - Released January 1, 1974 | Columbia

Hi-Res Distinctions The Qobuz Ideal Discography
Pianist Ramsey Lewis first came to fame as the purveyor of swinging soul-jazz in the mid-'60s, but like a lot of musicians he underwent some major changes by the end of that decade. Sun Goddess (1974), Lewis' biggest success of the decade, is miles away from the finger-snapping supper club sounds of "The In Crowd." By this time, Lewis had transformed himself into a jazz fusion funkateer, riffing on electric piano and synthesizer amid arrangements that meld jazz with funk, R&B, and yes, even touches of progressive rock. Sun Goddess is also something of a stealth Earth, Wind & Fire album, as it features most of the key players from that band, and bears echoes of EW&F's jazzier, more atmospheric side.© Rovi Staff /TiVo

Övergivenheten

Soilwork

Metal - Released August 19, 2022 | Nuclear Blast

Hi-Res
The more the years go by, the more surprising Soilwork’s releases become. Whereas their 2020 EP, A Whisp of the Atlantic, seemed to suggest the band were embarking on a (successful) progressive/aggressive path, Övergivenheten opens with two rather destabilising tracks. The title track and ‘Nous Sommes la Guerre’ together sound like a slightly more metal-oriented version of The Night Flight Orchestra (the rock-based side project of singer Björn Strid and guitarist David Andersson). With a lot of choirs and epic melodies, the sound here is very AOR oriented; it’s hard to imagine that this is the same band that once created the massacre that was The Chainheart Machine (2000). No sooner did ‘Electric Again’ pour some thrash energy back into the mix than ‘Valleys of Gloam’ took things back to ultra-melodic territory with its clear vocals and radio edited choruses. The album continues in the same way for over an hour. The tracks are, on average, one spoon tabasco for every three spoons of honey. It’s far from unpleasant, and the result is actually quite surprising: you’ve got to love a bit of sweet and sour (especially with a bit of extra sweet). There’s no doubt about it: Soilwork have talent in abundance, mastering every aspect of their music. Strid, for example, is an incredible melodic singer but can still blow your mind with a single scream. However, the band constantly feels like it’s keeping its options open. Each track is great in its own right, but the whole seems to lack any real guideline. It’s as if Soilwork are still looking for the right path even after 26 years. Perhaps Övergivenheten should be considered a “grower”—the kind of album that only reveals its true genius after a fair few listens? It’s quite possible. For the time being, and despite several studious listens, astonishment is the overriding response to this album: a bit like a chicken that’s just discovered an iPad. © Charlélie Arnaud/Qobuz

ARTEMIS

Artemis

Jazz - Released September 11, 2020 | Blue Note Records

Hi-Res Distinctions Qobuzissime
Super groups are often over marketed and rather dull. However, this appears to be the complete opposite with Artemis’s debut album, released on Blue Note Records. Behind the Artemis name, Greek Goddess of nature, the hunt and childbirth, are seven internationally acclaimed female musicians, each masters of their craft. At the head of this multi generational roundup, the Canadian pianist and musical director of the project, Renee Rosnes has brought together the Israeli clarinetist Anat Cohen, the Chilean tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana, the Canadian trompettiste Ingrid Jensen, the Japanese double bassist Noriko Ueda, the American drummer Allison Miller, and on two tracks, the Franco-American vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant. ‘Each member of Artemis is a unique individual, and this is what music needs, artistic versatility!’, explains Cohen. ‘It’s the people that make life interesting and that make music captivating’. The group’s identity has flourished organically thanks to the seven musicians, each expressing their own vison and perspective yet maintaining a strong homogeneity throughout the record. For Jensen, ‘the character of the Greek Goddess Artemis reveals the energy and the broad musical horizons that our band brings on stage’. This is where the success of the record, focused on natural unification, shines. This vast album, comprised mainly of original compositions also features eclectic covers of The Fool On The Hill by the Beatles, Cry Buttercup, Cry, popularised by Maxine Sullivan, The Sidewinder by Lee Morgan and If It’s Magic by Stevie Wonder. Expert in her field, Renee Rosnes’ musical arrangements capture and cement the artistic creativity of each member. This super group, entirely female in its line-up, sends a strong message to the male dominated jazz world. Artemis’ music is beautiful, intelligent, and challenges the preconceived ideas of the jazz genre. ©️ Marc Zisman/Qobuz
