The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser

Rob Zombie

Rock - Released April 29, 2016 | Rob Zombie (PS)

The ringmaster of carnival metal makes a return to his classic sound on sixth outing The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser. Retaining typical hallmarks of the Rob Zombie brand, listeners can expect a bucketload of B-movie schlock, intergalactic acid-industrial, and a whole grave-full of sex and violence. Propulsive and exciting, it's also Zombie's tightest album since 2001's Sinister Urge. Aside from the bonkers imagination that spawned such song titles as "The Hideous Exhibitions of a Dedicated Gore Whore" and "Super-Doom-Hex-Gloom, Pt. 1," Electric Warlock is also packed with entertainingly inscrutable lyrics that thrill with their nastiness and attract morbid curiosity like a backwoods freak show. Zombie and his band -- Piggy D. and former Marilyn Manson bandmates John 5 and Ginger Fish -- bring power and muscle on each proper song (there are a few moments of calm courtesy of spooky, sample-laden atmosphere pieces), churning on the epic vertigo of "Satanic Cyanide! The Killer Rocks On!," and pummeling on the brutal Hellbilly-redux "In the Age of the Consecrated Vampire We All Get High." The melodic hooks and jagged riffs maintain the energy, while the brevity of each song (eleven of twelve tracks clock in at under three minutes) create a breathless experience. Highlights include the aforementioned "Get High" and "Gore Whore" (which contains a melodic wink to Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"); the Primus-esque rap-scat of the icky alien sex tale "Well, Everybody's Fucking in a U.F.O."; and the peppy glam stomper "Get Your Boots On! That's the End of Rock and Roll." Fans of Zombie's rockabilly occult schtick will appreciate this new volume -- not only for its respectful nod to his legacy -- but also because it's Zombie giving them what they want: freaky fun that entertains, shocks, and rocks.© Neil Z. Not Just A Girl (The Highlights)

Shania Twain

Country - Released July 26, 2022 | Mercury Nashville

Hi-Res
A companion album to the 2022 documentary Not Just a Girl, this is a tight, no-nonsense collection of Shania Twain songs that's heavy on the hits. Some of these hits, such as 1996's "You Win My Love," have been eclipsed by Twain's blockbusters, so it's notable that they're here and "That Don't Impress Me Much" isn't, but that platinum hit is the only titanic number missing in action: "You're Still the One," "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!," "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under," and "Any Man of Mine" are all here. That makes for a satisfying, if not quite definitive, listen.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

True Genius

Ray Charles

Soul - Released September 10, 2021 | Tangerine Records

Hi-Res
In the year of his 90th birthday (which he would have celebrated on the 23rd of September 2020 had he not died in 2004), Ray Charles is honoured with a new 90-track compilation box set. Just another compilation like all the rest? Yes and no. Ray Charles is undoubtedly one of the most-compiled artists in the history of music. Published by Tangerine, the label that the musician set up at the end of the 50s to keep the rights to his songs, this box set starts out like all the others: with the post-Atlantic hits, Georgia On My Mind, Hit The Road Jack, One Mint Julep, Busted... These are timeless treasures of proto-soul, but there doesn't seem to be much novelty here. The rest is much more interesting, and much rarer: tracks recorded between the second half of the 1960s and the 2000s, many of which were only released on vinyl, never reissued on CD and until now unavailable on digital. This is the first time that Ray Charles' lesser-known years have been given the compilation treatment in this way, and it is a revelation. In the 90s and 2000s, the production of his songs had a synthetic feel, and they did not age too well. These rarer songs are often hidden gems of southern soul, flavoured with country and wrapped in sumptuous symphonic orchestrations. Whether he is singing the Muppets (It's Ain't Easy Being Green) or Gershwin (Summertime, a duet with Cleo Laine), Ray Charles is always deeply moving. Now, the dream is to hear reissues of all these albums in their entirety. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz

Ocean

Lady A

Country - Released November 15, 2019 | BMLG Records

Hi-Res
Ocean represents something of a re-centering for Lady A. Arriving in November 2019, a few months after the conclusion of their brief Our Kind of Vegas residency, Ocean finds the trio recording with a new label, and a new producer, Dann Huff, who has been on a hot country streak since helming some of Taylor Swift's Red in 2012. The group may have departed Capitol Nashville for Big Machine, but Ocean sounds like the group returning to the kind of warm, soft-focus country-pop that established them as hitmakers ten years earlier. Lady A don't deny they're a decade older anywhere on Ocean. The album is filled with songs about enduring love, both romantic and familial. It's telling that "What I'm Leaving For" -- a ballad about the heartache of leaving a loving home -- was among the songs that teased the album: its unabashed sentiment is the keystone of Ocean, plus the trio's revival of their close-knit soft-rock harmonies. Compared to the subdued glitz of Heart Break, their modern-minded 2017 collaboration with busbee, Ocean feels reserved and cautious, but it also feels soothing and welcoming. The whole thing rolls so smoothly, it's easy not to realize that the lightly grooving "Pictures" is a song of heartbreak, but that's the intent of Lady A with their seventh album: They mean to offer comfort, and that's precisely what Ocean delivers.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Finest

Funkadelic

Soul - Released August 28, 1997 | Westbound Records

Hi-Res
Funkadelic's commercial peak occurred during the late '70s, when George Clinton and company issued several hit albums for the Warner Brothers label. And it's that era that serves as the basis for countless Funkadelic compilations, while the group's earlier, more hard rocking releases (for Westbound) receive not nearly the same attention. This is a shame, as this period is just as good (and arguably, even better) than Funkadelic's latter, more renowned work, as evidenced by the 16-track compilation Finest. It wasn't until a year or two after the death of legendary funk-rock trailblazer Jimi Hendrix that Funkadelic truly came into their own -- and deservingly, inherited Jimi's vacated funk-rock throne. Covering a five-year period (1970's Funkadelic through 1975's Let's Take It to the Stage), Finest may be the best-assembled Funkadelic collection from this period yet, as both renowned band standards share space with several oft-overlooked tracks, which make their debut on any compilation. The early tracks "I Got a Thing" and "I Wanna Know if It's Good to You" show the bandmembers still honing their eventual rich 'n' funky sound, before they hit their stride with selections from the classic Maggot Brain album. As a result, you get a healthy sampling of some of the best funk the '70s had to offer, including "Hit It and Quit It," "You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks," "Loose Booty," "Cosmic Slop," "Red Hot Mama," and "Get Off Your Ass and Jam." The only disappointment is that a truncated version of the guitar showcase "Maggot Brain" is included, rather than the ten-plus-minute original version. Regardless, Finest is an exceptional sampler for those discovering the wild and wacky universe of Funkadelic.© Greg Prato /TiVo
