Beethoven: Complete Works for Cello & Piano

François-Frédéric Guy

Chamber Music - Released October 16, 2015 | Evidence (LTR)

Booklet
This is the third instalment in François-Frédéric Guy’s traversal of Beethoven and the first to delve into the chamber music. He is well matched in intellect, musicianship and temperament by cellist Xavier Phillips as they journey from the ridiculous (the Variations on ‘See the Conqu’ring Hero Comes’, in which Guy dispatches the virtuoso piano part with complete aplomb, to delectable effect) to the sublime (the Op 102 Sonatas). The two sets of variations on themes from Mozart’s Magic Flute are a very different proposition from the ‘Conqu’ring Hero’ but just as persuasive, with the Op 66 set given a particularly sparkling reading. Competition is of course thick on the ground, not least from Isserlis and Levin (playing a tremendously characterful McNulty fortepiano), which was an obvious choice for Record of the Month in February 2014. But Phillips and Guy deserve that accolade just as richly and their utterly different sound world is equally riveting.

Debussy & Murail: Révolutions

François-Frédéric Guy

Classical - Released February 18, 2022 | La Dolce Volta

Hi-Res Booklet
"To link Debussy with the compositions of Tristan Murail is to place musical evolution in a historical logic of sonic upheavals", says the pianist François-Frédéric Guy. Fascinated by idioms that revolutionise music, today he takes us on a journey between two immensely creative figures. At a distance of more than a century, Claude Debussy and Tristan Murail reveal the same concern for precision in writing and preservation of freedom of thought. The works assembled in this album metamorphose colours and spaces: they offer unprecedented poetic imagination, constantly expanding dreamlike worlds. The impression that remains on the listener's memory is above all one of astonishing and intense emotion. © La Dolce Volta

Secret Garden

François-Frédéric Guy

Solo Piano - Released January 20, 2023 | La Dolce Volta

Hi-Res Booklet
With this double album, François-Frédéric Guy opens the gate to his secret garden. This is his first discographic foray into the world of Chopin - a composer whose music soundtracked this French pianist’s childhood, and was played daily on the family piano by his father (who was incidentally a good amateur pianist). A particular favourite of his was Fantaisie-impromptu in C# minor, which Guy has selected to close this programme.Although he was introduced to Chopin’s music at a very young age, the French pianist had never dared to record the pieces within this programme. A few months of lockdown eventually encouraged him to bring this project to fruition. Such a programme needed to be played on the perfect instrument: one that would perfectly capture Chopin’s legato and long lyrical phrases. François-Frédéric Guy set his sights on a beautiful Pleyel – Chopin’s favourite piano. Built in 1905, this instrument seems to be the culmination of the Parisian manufacturer’s latest research. This programme lasts almost two hours and alternates Nocturnes, Études, Ballades and Waltzes with the incredible Fantaisie in F minor (which showcases Chopin’s full range of artistic skill and creativity), Sonata No.3 in B minor, the Polonaise-Fantaisie (whose contradictory title has long fascinated François-Frédéric Guy) and Fantaisie-impromptu. The latter was supposedly disliked by the original composer, but it serves as a moving finale here. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Chopin: 19 Valses

François Chaplin

Classical - Released January 7, 2022 | Aparté

Hi-Res Booklet
Very popular during Chopin’s lifetime, the waltzes have long been a favorite with professionals and amateurs alike. Highly virtuosic – most of them were clearly not intended to be danced – and sometimes melancholy, they nevertheless retain the distinctive lightness and grace that we associate with the genre. These pieces have accompanied François Chaplin since his early days as a pianist. After so many years spent playing them, looking beyond their apparent simplicity and fathoming the depths of their poetry, this lifelong admirer of Chopin brings together here, on this magnificent recording – ten years after his complete Nocturnes – the composer’s 19 Waltzes. This complete and continuous reading enables us to perceive them as a whole, stunningly beautiful and full of verve. © Aparté

Chopin: Piano Works

Samson François

Classical - Released January 1, 2001 | Warner Classics

When it came to complete recordings of the solo piano works of Chopin in the middle years of the 20th century, there was a time Samson François represented the French school and Artur Rubinstein represented the Polish school, and then there was everybody else. But François' was the only truly complete set, since he recorded all the published and some of the unpublished works, while Rubinstein conspicuously left out the etudes. Beyond completeness, François represented the French school in more than name; he was an individualist who did things his own way. In practice, this works out spectacularly well in some cases and less well in others. Much of it depends on the difficulty of the piece or the passage. Some of the etudes are sensitively played, and parts of the G minor Ballade are very beautifully phrased. The more difficult etudes and the conclusion of the Ballade are hit or miss, with more misses than hits. And so it goes, with the easy preludes like the E minor and the A minor coming off as fresh and spontaneous, while all of the Scherzos seem at any moment ready to go spinning out of control. Anyone interested in studying the evolution of Chopin playing in the 20th century should have an interest in these recordings, but it seems unlikely that François' style of playing will experience a revival because of the reissue of this 10-disc set.© TiVo

Liszt : Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, Sonate en si mineur

François-Frédéric Guy

Classical - Released March 17, 2011 | Zig-Zag Territoires

For the 200th anniversary of the birth of Franz Liszt, pianist François-Frédéric Guy has recorded an impressive album of the Harmonies poétiques et religieuses and the Sonata in B minor, a presentation that covers two CDs and demonstrates both the composer's inexhaustible imagination and the performer's commitment to the music. Because Harmonies poétiques et religieuses is predominantly defined by its meditative quality and serene moods, it contains some of Liszt's most sustained and shimmering music, and the expressive control required to play at a soft level for most of the work is fully evident in Guy's rapt and gentle performance. The sonata, on the other hand, is a dramatic counterweight to the soothing lyricism of Harmonies, and it's dynamic energy is compressed in its half-hour duration, in contrast to the nearly 100 minutes it takes to play the first work. After hearing Guy's quiet interpretation of Harmonies, his performance of the sonata is almost startling in its power and passion. Guy unleashes the kinetic energy that had been held in reserve and rises to the demands of this tempestuous work. The reproduction is clear and quite resonant, which is fine in the sonata, but tends toward blurred textures in Harmonies without some careful volume adjustment.© TiVo
