Man Of The Woods

Justin Timberlake

Pop - Released February 2, 2018 | RCA Records Label

Hi-Res
Memphis, Tennessee. It’s there that Justin Timberlake was born, on January 31, 1981. A city that you cannot separate from numerous musical revelations, as is often the case in the rest of the South of the United States. This Southern DNA, the former leader of NSYNC claims it partly on Man Of Woods. For example by inviting Chris Stappleton, THE country songwriter of the moment, on Say Something, Justin Timberlake seems to want to take the urban R&B into the dirt and the wide-open spaces. It’s a two-headed approach symbolized by the album cover. Assisted by his old accomplices Timbaland and the tandem Pharrell Williams/Chad Hugo aka the Neptunes, he tries here to merge his synthetic pop full of soul with Southern country. On FutureSex/LoveSounds and The 20/20 Experience, Timberlake had already taken some risks and proved he wasn’t an empty pop icon of the times. Once again here, he intrigues, even if this fifth album seems on the whole calibrated for the charts with titles like Midnight Summer Jam, a disco trip that’s likely to become a hit. The work is probably less ambitious than The 20/20 Experience, but proves once more that the man never rests on his laurels. © CM/Qobuz

Flyin' The Flannel

fIREHOSE

Pop/Rock - Released April 23, 1991 | Columbia

Hi-Res
It was a pretty big deal in the underground rock community when fIREHOSE made the jump from an independent record label to a major one (Columbia) with their fourth full-length record, 1991's Flyin' the Flannel. But fans shouldn't have worried; the trio didn't change its sound to fit its new label, although the songwriting did become more succinct, which only improved the album's outstanding 16 tracks (resulting in fIREHOSE's finest album). The album-opening anthem, "Down With the Bass," is a Mike Watt tribute to his beloved four-string, while the band rocks out throughout the album: "Up Finnegan's Ladder," "Can't Believe," the title track, "O'er the Town of Pedro," "The First Cuss," "Anti-Misogyny Maneuver," and "Town' the Line" are all standouts. Like all fIREHOSE albums, Flyin' the Flannel includes its share of soothing moments, such as "Toolin'," "Walking the Cow," the downtrodden album closer "Losers, Boozers, and Heroes," and perhaps the best song on the album, the swirling jazz of "Epoxy, for Example." Flyin' the Flannel is one of the great lost rock gems of the '90s. Super highly recommended.© Greg Prato /TiVo

XL

Blue Flannel

Rock - Released January 1, 1998 | Universal Records

The liner notes to Blue Flannel's debut album, XL, asserted, "WE ARE NOT ALTERNATIVE." Whether the Columbus, GA foursome should or shouldn't be called alternative could be debated; that term means ten different things to ten different people. What we can say for sure is that Flannel's power pop, pop-rock and punk rock is as quirky as it is hook-laden. Bratty, humorous offerings like "You Bore Me," "Sleepy Boy" and the single "Havin' a Bad Day" make it clear that Flannel isn't a band that takes itself too seriously. When lead singer Derek Coile sings about how much he hates life on "Kill Me," it's obvious that he's doing a parody of the dark, angst-ridden lyrics that often defined grunge and alternative rock in the 1990s. (In fact, the name Blue Flannel was meant to parody Seattle's grunge scene.) Meanwhile, old-time country music is parodied on the goofy "Animal Song." Listeners can decide for themselves whether or not Flannel is an alternative band; the main thing is that XL is a lot of fun.© Alex Henderson /TiVo
