The Sickness

Disturbed

Hard Rock - Released February 25, 2000 | Reprise

Hi-Res
Alternative metal exploded during the late '90s thanks to groundwork laid by groups like Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie, and Rage Against the Machine, and as record companies scrambled to find the next Korn or Limp Bizkit, the genre became clogged with legions of similar-sounding bands, all trying to find just the right blend of low, heavy guitar riffs, rap-metal, industrial, and intense aggression. Often, those attempts could result in sounds that seemed too calculated and self-consciously cobbled together to feel natural; plus, inventive production was frequently employed to disguise many songs' lack of memorable hooks. The Sickness, the first entry by Chicago's Disturbed in the alt-metal sweepstakes, thankfully avoids those common pitfalls, turning in a mixture of raw, gut-level metal and industrial/electronic backing that feels logical and integrated. Although the music has its fair share of pummeling aggression and accompanying shouted vocals, Disturbed also isn't afraid to employ melody, and they're actually quite good at it when they choose that direction. Occasional forays into rap-metal aren't really the group's strong suit and can feel a bit awkward, although they do have a certain rhythmic acuity missing from some similar bands' attempts. But even if it has a few less-than-compelling moments, The Sickness overall comes off as the work of a band who really doesn't have far to go to achieve total control of its sound and compositional skills, and that makes it a terrific debut album.© Steve Huey /TiVo

Laugh Tracks

Knocked Loose

Metal - Released September 16, 2016 | Pure Noise Records

Oldham County, Kentucky quintet Knocked Loose blows the mosh pit open with their debut LP, Laugh Tracks (Pure Noise). The band -- vocalist Bryan Garris, guitarists Isaac Hale and Cole Crutchfield, bassist Kevin Otten, and drummer Dylan Isaacs -- follows a pair of head-splitting hardcore EPs with this 11-track collection, an assault of aggression with some metalcore flourish. Laugh Tracks features the singles "Deadringer" and "Oblivion's Peak." It debuted in September 2016 on the Billboard 200 and in the Top 50 on six separate side charts.© Neil Z. Yeung /TiVo

Live in Paris

Pierre Bensusan

World - Released January 1, 1997 | Dadgad Music

Booklet
This interesting CD has a full set of duets by guitarist Pierre Bensusan, whose singing voice is sometimes heard, and Didier Malherbe, who switches between flute, soprano, alto and clarinet. The music occasionally borders on jazz and has improvisation but not much blues feeling, being closer to world music, Indian folk songs and what is sometimes called new acoustic music than to jazz. Malherbe is a particularly strong flutist, and Bensusan's guitar is self-sufficient enough to fill in for any "missing" instruments. Overall, the original music is fine, if not overly memorable. A sometimes-intriguing collaboration. © Scott Yanow /TiVo

Fetish

Joan Jett & The Blackhearts

Rock - Released June 8, 1999 | Legacy Recordings

By 1999, riot grrrl pioneer Joan Jett was all but reduced to being a nostalgia act. The unfortunate thing was, she still had plenty of good songs left in her, even if her days of hitting the charts were long gone. In fact, she had more aggressiveness in her than ever, as Fetish proves. Placed on the compilation album of the same name, "Fetish" features Jett screaming lyrics that -- for the first time in her recorded career -- truly touch on the obscene. "You look good in latex, get it off, we're having rough sex," Jett rasps, increasingly bordering on dominatrix imagery with such come-ons as "relax while I pound your ass" and "restrain while I f*ck your head." Though Jett was never one to shy away from testing boundaries, this is easily her most blatantly controversial material to date. Sonically, Fetish is just as striking -- it's an unpolished, industrial metal affair that sounds amazingly comfortable, given the fact that it is being played by a middle-aged-'80s rocker. Perhaps that's what makes a song such as "Fetish" so intriguing -- while this is certainly not the Joan Jett of yesteryear, she sounds comfortable enough to make the music and lyrics work. It's a killer track, proving that Jett not only has plenty of life left in her tank, but she's still got an abundance of creativity and surprises in store.© Barry Weber /TiVo
