Scenes From My Life

Richard Bona

Jazz Fusion & Jazz Rock - Released July 20, 1999 | Columbia

Richard Bona's debut solo album Scenes from My Life is an unexpected delight, a first effort of such assurance that it's nearly irresistable. Bona blends a smooth production with fusions of contemporary jazz and music from his native country, Cameroon, West Africa. He has a warm, fluid style on bass and his voice is pure, high and lovely. To some undiscriminating ears, it may sound a little too smooth, but there is no calculation behind this music, only joy, and that is what makes Scenes from My Life a first-class debut.© Stephen Thomas Erlewine /TiVo

Actual Life 3 (January 1 - September 9 2022)

Fred again..

Dance - Released October 28, 2022 | Atlantic Records UK

Hi-Res Distinctions Grammy Awards Best Dance/Electronic Music Album
Although Fred Gibson’s whirlwind rise to fame has largely occurred over the last two years, his talents were championed throughout the 2010s by the cream of the industry: Brian Eno, Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, Eminem, Headie One, Rita Ora… a list as measureless as it is manifold. After being dubbed Producer of the Year at the Brit Awards in 2020, Gibson began work on the Actual Life project — his début solo venture — the first instalment of which would be released the following year, under the Fred again.. moniker. To borrow the words of good friend Marea Stamper, what came next was indeed ‘marvelous’: a string of wildly successful live shows the world over, a sophomore album, collaborations with such superstars as Swedish House Mafia, Skrillex and Four Tet—and one particularly iconic set from a recent Boiler Room party in London. The music conceived over this period forms the basis for Actual Life 3 – a celebration of freedom, and emancipation from the collective trauma of these past years. There’s always an inherent familiarity in his selection of source material: voice memos recorded on prolonged train journeys and aimless coffee mornings in North West London; tender outpourings from acapella singers and spoken word poets ripped off the internet. Amid a collage of vague-yet-hopeful musings about life, love and loss is an arresting human quality — one which confronts a myriad of complex emotions all at once, and whose essence extends far beyond its creator. It’s this universal approach which seems to inspire adoration among fans, all of whom can find a piece of themselves within his productions. Where other similar artists submit to pastiche, Fred’s music displays genuine emotional commitment, dissolving any hint of cliché sometimes associated with this sort of creative process. A songwriter’s spirit lies at the heart of every track, but poppy tendencies are enriched by a web of genre-spanning influences and intricate, club-ready production fresh from the underground. It’s enough to make a believer out of the most fervent skeptics (if ever there were any). © Finn Kverndal/Qobuz

Califone

Alternative & Indie - Released May 19, 2023 | Jealous Butcher Records

Hi-Res Distinctions Uncut: Album of the Month
No one would have expected Tim Rutili to embrace yacht rock as an influence, and that hasn't happened yet, but his tenth album under the Califone rubric, 2023's Villagers, does suggest he's been listening to a lot of 1970s soft rock and letting the influence soak in. Of course, when Rutili was drawing on the blues in his earlier work, Califone still sounded like he'd filtered the structures through his fertile imagination, and Villagers is soft rock bent into new forms informed by his angular sonic experimentalism. "McMansions" is languid on the surface, but the occasional off-kilter bursts of guitar skronk and fiddle screech add a compelling grit. The late-night piano ballad "Comedy," punctuated with a polished horn arrangement, is married to a lyric full of violence and regret. The acoustic guitar and Latin percussion backing to "Sweetly" sounds as easy as Sunday morning, but the story is a pitiless remembrance of a relationship broken beyond repair, and the darker it gets, the more the music bends to the mood. The push and pull of form and content is something Rutili has always done well, and the skillful instrumental execution on Villagers extends even to the many sonic left turns; they may seem unexpected but make perfect sense in context, like a gunshot that happens just when it's most dramatically effective. The opening track, "The Habsburg Jaw," shows he hasn't forgotten how to put his more eccentric leanings up front once in a while, even if they're (just barely) held in place by a melody that could have been a great pop tune if he'd wanted. Under Rutili's leadership, Califone has been one of the most satisfying acts in Chicago's post-rock community for over two decades, and with Villagers he's shown he's not out of interesting ideas and intriguing places to take them, even when he's letting the surfaces seem more engaging.© Mark Deming /TiVo

La Captive du Sérail

Florie Valiquette

Classical - Released March 11, 2022 | Château de Versailles Spectacles

Hi-Res Booklet
In the 18th century, it was common for theatre audiences around Europe to shudder in their seats. Performances at the time would often put an exotic twist on the not-so-distant past, forcing viewers to once again confront the terror of the Battle of Vienna, which ended the Turk’s second siege of the Austrian city. The Ottoman threat had now receded: people could now enjoy a coffee and croissant in a café, and the much-loved Viennese pastries were born. Tales of harems, Christian slaves and the orient, such as One Thousand and One Nights, frightened, intrigued and amazed the population. Not to be outdone, composers made sure to put their mark on this growing craze. “Turqueries” were fashionable in both operas and instrumental music, and orientalism allowed for all kinds of fantasies. This wave of exoticism became especially popular in Paris, particularly in its Opéra-Comique, one of the oldest theatres in France.Soprano Florie Valiquette, from Quebec, offers us a brilliant, moving and light take on this repertoire. Her grace, coupled with her skilful versatility, means she successfully tackles a diverse range of works. Created in 2019 for the Fantômes de Versailles, the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal regularly plays in the pit of the recently restored theatre at Versailles. This building is also used for recordings performed under the label Château de Versailles Spectacles, now almost exclusively available on Qobuz, and there’s so many great projects in the pipeline!Built around excerpts from Grétry’s La Caravane du Caire, which enjoyed great success following its premiere in 1783, the programme also includes excerpts from Gluck’s Pèlerins de la Mecque and Mozart’s L’Enlèvement au sérail, sung in French. Complemented by works by Philidor, Monsigny and Gibert, the “gallant turqueries” presented here paint a fairly accurate picture of the type of performances enjoyed by French society in the second half of the Age of Enlightenment, just a few years before the great upheaval of the French Revolution. © François Hudry/Qobuz
