Fénix

Nicky Jam

Latin - Released January 11, 2017 | Sony Music Latin

Hi-Res
Released in early 2017, Fénix is reggaeton veteran Nicky Jam's first studio album in ten years, following 2007's The Black Carpet. Since then, he relocated from Puerto Rico to Colombia, restarted his career, signed to Sony, and became more successful than ever. He scored several international hit singles and won numerous awards for "El Perdón," his enormously successful collaboration with Enrique Iglesias. Both the Spanish and English ("Forgiveness") versions of the song appear on Fénix, as well as additional hits "Hasta el Amanecer" (which also appears in both languages, with additional remixes of both, featuring Daddy Yankee and Kid Ink) and "El Amante." Many other collaborations make up the album's lengthy track list, including songs with J Balvin, Arcángel, and dancehall reggae stars Sean Paul and Konshens. Mixing harder-edged club jams with more vulnerable pop tunes, Fénix brings listeners up to date on what Jam has been up to since his creative rebirth. The album was his most successful full-length to date, hitting number one on the Billboard Latin Albums chart and reaching the Top 30 of the Billboard 200.© Paul Simpson /TiVo

Antonio Draghi & Leonardo García Alarcón: El Prometeo

Leonardo García Alarcón

Classical - Released March 6, 2020 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
The multitude of incomplete manuscripts of so many baroque operas and oratorios offers a very tempting playground for today's performers and musicologists. However, it is quite rare for a 21st century artist to compose an entire act from scratch. This was what has happened with El Prometeo by Italian composer Antonio Draghi, who was active at the Habsburg court in Vienna. Composed in 1669, it is one of the few operas from that time written in Castilian, which gives this discovery a vital historical importance. Draghi is a direct heir to Monteverdi and Cavalli, whose works he sang in his youth and whose style he carried forward. As was the style in his day, his music is made up of a deft mixture of comic scenes. This was a tradition that would stretch all the way down to Mozart, via the Jommelli operas that the young composer so admired. Convinced that what he had discovered was the complete manuscript, Leonardo García Alarcón had found himself trapped when he realised his mistake just as the work was due to open at the Dijon Opera. So he was obliged to either cancel the production, or to assemble other works into a "pasticcio" of the style of the 18th century. The conductor wasn't paralysed by the fear of a blank page: he put himself into Draghi's shoes to compose a whole third act: the densest, most dramatic part of the artwork, the original of which was irretrievably lost. Going beyond mere plagiarism, García Alarcón had some fun, paying tribute to Austrian opera, borrowing from Draghi of course, but also from Cesti, Caldara, and all the way up to Mozart. The result of this tour de force is a perfect illusion: his assimilation of different styles allows him to create music that's inspired by and in perfect harmony with the rest of the score. The Namur Chamber Choir, the many soloists and the bewitching colours of the Cappella Mediterranea all contribute greatly to a production whose success you can feel on this new album. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Prestige

Daddy Yankee

World - Released January 1, 2012 | Capitol Latin

Building on the well-rounded effort that was 2010's Mundial, Daddy Yankee's sixth studio album is a whirlwind mix of reggaeton and Latin music flavors, but this time, the overall flow of the album is effortless, with no tolerance of filler. Prestige actually feels more important from the beginning, kicking off with the rock-solid "Perros Salvajes," which comes off as "Gasonlina" pitched down a touch, making that winding snake of reggaeton's Den Bow beat sound all the more sinister. Traditional reggaeton rules the album until J. Alvarez and Yankee take a swim in Auto-Tune for the sweet R&B of "El Amante," and when it comes to getting the pop party started, both "Pasarela" and "Limbo" bounce like Pitbull on a three-day weekend. "Switchea" gleefully messes with dubstep while ultra-gloss, fun dance numbers (the will.i.am-like "La Noche de Los 2" with Natalia Jimenez) sit right next to purist reggaeton posse tracks (the seven-minute-plus "Llegamos a la Disco" with its epic guest list) and yet all these transitions come off as natural. Prestige would be cumbersome at 17 tracks if an overflow of flash, swagger, and talent didn't make that number right-sized, and with the kinetic and bright Prince Royce feature "Ven Comigo," the highlight-filled album ends with one of its best. Another career high point for the one they rightfully call "The Big Boss."© David Jeffries /TiVo
