Conversation

Twinz

Pop - Released January 1, 1995 | Def Jam Recordings

Although they were immortalized in Warren G's Top Ten hit "This DJ," Twinz were an overlooked branch of the G Funk family tree who made good use of their connections to create the steady Conversation in 1995. Twin brothers Deon and DeWayne Williams wisely allow Warren G to dominate their album, and he skillfully wears the hats of producer, songwriter, additional percussionist, and background vocalist. Yet it's the female vocal support by Nanci Fletcher and Tracey Nelson which adds a shimmer to tracks like "Round and Round" and "Good Times." The enjoyably clichéd "Eastside LB" incorporates Deniece Williams' "Free" as deftly as Warren G "regulated" Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)." But unlike the latter, the Twinz' clever interpretation did not become a huge hit. In parallel fashion, Conversation makes good use of proven post-Chronic elements (funky '70s synthesizer samples, arresting diva vocals, loc'ed lyrics), but the Twinz were unable to catch the Dr. Dre wave, which swept many of their Long Beach peers to success. Lack of a distinctive identity contributed to their obscurity, since the brothers' party raps are overshadowed by the dominant female vocalists and striking production elements. Those familiar sounds and themes give Conversation a pleasantly familiar consistency which should appeal to Snoop and Nate Dogg fans who might have missed the Twinz during the '90s G Funk explosion.© Vince Ripol /TiVo

The Dead Has Arisen

Lil' 1/2 Dead

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released January 1, 1994 | Priority Records

Lil 1/2 Dead had been a member of the Dogg Pound (Snoop Doggy Dogg's outfit) when, in 1994, the L.A. rapper came out with his first solo album, The Dead Has Arisen. The most obvious comparison on this CD is D.J. Quik -- like Quik, 1/2 Dead is a gangsta rapper who has a relaxed, laid-back type of flow and tells it like it is without going out of his way to inundate the listener with violent lyrics. The Dead Has Arisen isn't nearly as violent or as graphic as N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton or Ice Cube's AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted -- essentially, this is an R-rated party album along the lines of Dr. Dre's The Chronic, Warren G's Regulate...G Funk Era or Quik's Quik Is the Name. A big part of this album's appeal is the smooth and melodic producing of Tracy Kendrick, Courtney "Tha Commander" Branch and others; though their Dre-influenced tracks aren't as imaginative as Dre's, they see to it that this is a nice-sounding CD. Rapping about sex, marijuana and life as a "playa," 1/2 Dead doesn't bring any groundbreaking or earth-shattering insights to his album. But he manages to come up with his share of catchy rhymes and hooks, and when you combine them with the appealing production, you've got a party album that's decent, if conventional.© Alex Henderson /TiVo

E3 AF

Dizzee Rascal

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released October 9, 2020 | Universal-Island Records Ltd.

Hi-Res
2020 has been a good year for British grime heavyweights. We’ve had Wiley with The Godfather III, the collaborative project Insomnia led by Skepta, Chip and Young Adz and now Dizzee Rascal with his seventh album: E3 AF. It holds ten frenetic tracks, all recorded in London over three years, and provides a panorama of London’s sound. Grime is, of course, the main genre here. Though while he went back to his roots on his previous album Raskit in 2017, this record takes grime in new directions. Dizzee marries it with other influences, being the pioneer that he is. On Body Loose he raps “I live the high life, I am not a liar / If you're looking for a vibe, I am the supplier.” And whatever vibe you’re looking for, he’s got it. He takes a dip into UK drill on Act Like You Know before swerving towards 2-step garage on You Don’t Know. The rhythms multiply and mix and even though he respects the rules of the genres, they’re reappropriated enough for you to feel his thirst for innovation. The songs L.L.L. Love Life Live Large with Chip and the last track Be Incredible with its pop-like chorus from Rob Jones TV are proof of this, sitting on the border of at least three different genres. Dizzee Rascal is one of grime’s bosses, so of course he’s allowed to choose what direction to take it. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz

Delinquent Habits

Hip-Hop/Rap - Released May 27, 1996 | RCA Records Label

"The DELINQUENT HABITS of this hip-hop trio include their release dates...this disc--while featuring solid rhyming and spare, funky tracks--sounds a little dated....this likable group's Latin-influenced shills are...at least grumpy enough to create some promising tracks..."© TiVo
