On Sunset

Paul Weller

Pop - Released July 3, 2020 | Polydor Records

Hi-Res
Finding a balance between his musical obsessions from the ‘60s – pop and soul – and his avant-garde ambitions has always been somewhat of a dilemma for Paul Weller, from his earlier punk years as the lead singer of The Jam to his shift to soul music with Style Council and his complete 360° turnaround in 1992 when he embarked on his solo career. For his 15th opus, On Sunset, the Modfather slaloms through more genres than ever, showing off a jamboree of styles from pop, psychedelic and rock to folk, easy listening and predominantly, soul. As a proper mod worthy of his title, Weller, of course, knows all of its various forms and is a fan of all of them, from Northern soul to Motown and blue-eyed-soul. But in On Sunset, the songs are mostly of the pop genre, polished, diverse, well arranged and reminiscent of the sounds of other great musicians, such as Equanimity which sounds like an unlikely fusion between The Kinks and Bowie. The Modfather arms himself with acoustic and electronic instruments, vintage synths, funky brass and full orchestra, switching from intimate to grandiose (Rockets), and from mainstream to experimental at the drop of a hat. Even when it comes to the guests that feature on the album, Weller has cast his net wide, with appearances from Steve Cradock, from the former band Ocean Colour Scene whom he has worked with for years, his old pal Mick Talbot from Style Council who returns with his Hammond organ on three of the tracks and Julie Gros from the band Le SuperHomard who sings in French on More. Also featured on the album are guitarist Josh McClorey from The Strypes, folk trio The Staves as well as R&B singer Col3trane. For those who know him well, this album will make total sense as the genius behind The Jam is simply up to his usual antics. For those who don't, this album may leave them feeling a little disorientated… © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Serenity

Culture Beat

Dance - Released January 1, 1993 | Abfahrt Media

Culture Beat (vocalist Tania Evans, rapper Jay Supreme, and German musicians Torsten Fenslau and Peter Zweler) achieved massive club success in 1993 with the single "Mr. Vain," an engaging house tune that also hit the Top 20 on the pop chart. "Mr. Vain" utilized the same technique as Snap's club classic "Rhythm Is a Dancer" and Real McCoy's Top Ten hit "Another Night": generic female vocals punctuated by the occasional light rap interlude, accompanied by a throbbing bassline and an instantly memorable keyboard hook. The group's 1994 album, Serenity, predictably surrounds "Mr. Vain" with similar sounding club anthems, but none of the tunes are as instantly memorable as the hit. Still, Serenity is an okay listen, albeit a repetitious one. "Got to Get It" is a virtual rewrite of "Mr. Vain," and the beat-heavy tracks "World in Your Hands" and "The Other Side of Me" are unremarkable but competent and entertaining. Serenity may lack substance, but the album should please fans of pleasant, non-threatening dance music. © William Cooper /TiVo

Marshall Allen presents Sun Ra And His Arkestra: In The Orbit Of Ra

Sun Ra

Free Jazz & Avant-Garde - Released September 22, 2014 | Strut

Distinctions Sélection JAZZ NEWS - Pitchfork: Best New Reissue
As the longest-tenured member of the Arkestra (55-plus years and counting as of 2014), there is no one with a deeper understanding of the music of Sun Ra than Marshall Allen, and that's part of what makes In the Orbit of Ra such a special collection. The Arkestra's long history is often divided into musical/geographic periods or spoken of as a progression from inside to outside playing. This set spans from the late '50s to the late '70s but the non-chronological sequencing shows how artificial those stylistic boundaries are. The tracks chosen show how many of the elements of their more outside material were present even back in the late '50s and there was quite clearly a strong, coherent musical vision in place from the beginning (but most audiences probably weren't ready for it yet). There are a few signature tunes here, but this isn't really a greatest-hits collection. Instead, it's a guided tour from Marshall Allen deep into Sun Ra's music. Each track leads the listener a bit further so by the time Art Jenkins' space voice enters at the end of disc one, it makes perfect sense instead of just being "weird" in a different context. "Solar Differentials" is the perfect setup for the second disc (starting with the hypnotic "Astro Black," replete with industrial drill sounds), which continues the journey with more of a focus on vocal pieces over the years, ultimately leading us back full circle to the beginning in Chicago. In addition to the unreleased tracks "Reflects Motion, Pt. 1" and "Trying to Put the Blame on Me" (a wonderful solo piano piece), there's an unedited "Islands in the Sun" and a bunch of great photos by Val Wilmer. Then there's the remastering: this is easily the best sound most of these tracks have ever had before, on CD or LP. There are any number of great performances here, but Ronnie Boykins' work on bass really stands out with the new remastering. Despite the fact that most of this material was already available, In the Orbit of Ra is close to essential for fans and a pretty good place to start for the curious Sun Ra novice. He really was writing music for the 21st century. © Sean Westergaard /TiVo
