Debussy: C'est l'extase - La mer

Vannina Santoni

Classical - Released June 9, 2023 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet
Casual buyers and browsers should note that the vocal works on this album, accompanied by orchestra, are not the original works of Debussy. They were made in 2012 by composer Robin Holloway at the request of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. They were performed at that time by Renée Fleming but have not been recorded until now. The settings are unorthodox and never boring, and they will probably strike different listeners in different ways. Holloway reorders the songs, believing that they were not intended as a sequenced set (probably debatable), inserts some of the composer's Verlaine settings in the new ordering, adds transitions between most of them, and tacks on a high-powered epilogue of his own. The end result, perhaps, is Debussy for the 21st century, amped up and intense, with hidden psychological themes and ideas wrung out and brought to the fore by the orchestration. There will be little disagreement, however, about two of the main attractions: soprano Vannina Santoni is a talented newcomer from whom one wants to hear more, and Mikko Franck, heard at the end in La Mer, is an excellent Debussy conductor; his rendition of this well-trodden work is full of detail and entirely absorbing. Santoni has a big voice that stands up to these orchestrations, and Alpha's sound from the Radio France auditorium keeps everything in balance. Nothing if not an intriguing Debussy release. © James Manheim /TiVo

Debussy : Préludes - Satie: Gymnopédies, Gnossiennes

Fazil Say

Solo Piano - Released August 31, 2018 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason - 5 étoiles de Classica
The remarkable Turkish pianist Fazıl Say (born 1970) here offers us a suitably remarkable album, recorded in 2016 in the Great Hall of the Salzburg Mozarteum and given over to the Premier Livre of Debussy's Préludes – 1910 – which he sets up in against the six Gnossiennes by Satie (1890 for the first three, 1897 for the latter three) and to the pieces which made him famous, the Gymnopédies of 1888. It's quite stunning to hear these works and to reflect on the fact that Satie's works actually come before Debussy's Préludes – by almost two decades, in fact. It is hardly surprising the Satie has been thought a real avant-gardist both in his day and by minimalists today. Considering how different these two were, it was natural that they should have been friends, especially given Debussy's tendency towards jealousy of his contemporaries... But it is impossible to be jealous of a kind, bubbly soul like Satie. Say brings immense tenderness to these two opposite poles – poles so far removed that they almost join back up. © SM/Qobuz

Beneath the Eyrie

Pixies

Alternative & Indie - Released September 13, 2019 | Infectious Music

For once-epic bands that restart their careers, recording new music is always fraught with peril, namely being trapped into an unwinnable comparison with their former selves. The Pixies’ first four albums remain utterly timeless, still gleaming with an otherworldliness unlike anything else before or since. Not surprisingly the band was unable to recapture that edge or atmosphere in either of their post-reformation albums, Indie Cindy (2014) or Head Carrier (2016). Pixies purists will argue that the problem with the new records was the reduced role of Kim Deal, whose fractious relationship with Black Francis was the band's creative heart; the hair trigger tensions was what made the band so special before her final departure in 2013. Paz Lenchantin, who was a new addition for Head Carrier , has now settled in as a permanent contributing member, a change that may have inspired Francis to come up with the best collection of original tunes since 1991's Trompe le Monde. With its steady beat, single note guitar signature and opening lines "I set my broken bone/with a twist and a crack," "Bird of Prey" has more than a whiff of earlier, more conventional songs like "Here Comes Your Man," and is easily one of the album's finest classic Pixies-like numbers. In tunes like "Los Surfers Muertos" and "St. Nazaire" where Francis shrieks the album's best couplet, "Her daddy's dead and her eyes are black/Smells like spliff and Armagnac," Beneath the Eyrie is a conventional four piece rock record. It’s gothy, reminiscent of Nick Cave in spots and vividly obsessed with darkness via lyrics that revel in terms like "venom wine" and "poisonous forest" and Black Francis opining that he's "succeeding as a failure" and yet is "ready for love." Recorded with too much compression and a crushing drum sound, the band has nevertheless finally made a worthy new record, one that both gives them a future and honors their towering past. © Robert Baird/Qobuz

Debussy: Préludes du 2e Livre, La Mer (transc. Debussy)

Alexander Melnikov

Classical - Released June 29, 2018 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
Released as one of nine new albums dedicated to Debussy by harmonia mundi to mark the centenary of the French composer's birth, this volume offers the Second Book of the Preludes played by Alexander Melnikov on an Erard piano. The world of Debussyan piano relied so heavily on timbre that pianists and editors alike often prefer one or another make so as to get a grip on the specificities of the music. Alexander Melnikov is one of those rare Russian artists to take an interest in ancient instruments. This student of Sviatoslav Richter was quickly captivated by this kind of work, working with Andreas Staier and Alexey Lubimov and playing with specialised ensembles like the Concerto Köln or the Berlin Akademie für Alte Musik. His performance of the Preludes by Debussy at London's Wigmore Hall was particularly well received by critics who described the Russian pianist as a "sorcerer" who is highlighting "ravishing", "violent", "terrifying" music. An iridescent orchestral masterpiece, La Mer is difficult to boil down to a four-handed piano piece, and Debussy disowned his transcription, leaving it to André Caplet to prepare another one for two four-handed pianos. Alexandre Melnikov and Olga Pashchenko have taken up the challenge to prove that the auteur's transcription is not at all "unplayable". © François Hudry/Qobuz

Debussy : Préludes du 1er Livre - Estampes

Javier Perianes

Solo Piano - Released November 30, 2018 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions 5 de Diapason
On the dawn of his fortieth birthday, the Spanish pianist Javier Perianes should be more than proud of his dazzling career. Among the places that regularly welcome him we find Carnegie Hall, the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Philharmonie de Paris, Gewandhaus in Leipzig and La Roque d'Anthéron. Barenboim and Larrocha were his masters. He is particularly fond of the great French repertoire of Debussy and Ravel, though he never focuses solely on them - his previous recordings have taken him to Beethoven, Mompou, Schubert or Granados. Here, he remains in the French world with Debussy's Book I from Preludes and his three Estampes, the composer’s piano masterpiece, which Perianes distils with immense instrumental colour, breathing, contrasts and a magnificent violence that counterbalances a crystal clearness at every moment, as requested by the score. © SM/Qobuz
