Dreams and Daggers

Cécile McLorin Salvant

Vocal Jazz - Released September 29, 2017 | Mack Avenue Records

Hi-Res Distinctions 4F de Télérama - Indispensable JAZZ NEWS
One album after another, Cecile McLorin Salvant reminds us she’s anything but the stereotypical “jazz singer”. Revealed to the public in 2013 with her gorgeous WomanChild, she stepped it up a gear two years later with For One To Love, an even more masterful and complete record, on which her voice worked wonders. Born on August 28th, 1989 in Miami, Florida, she studied French law, baroque and vocal jazz in Aix-en-Provence before winning the Thelonious Monk International Competition in 2010 (at only 20, in front of a jury composed of Al Jarreau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Patti Austin, Dianne Reeves and Kurt Elling!). She went on to display impressive qualities as a composer as well with five original songs on her 2015 album. With Dreams And Dagger the French-American, who now lives in Harlem, is releasing a third album recorded live at Village Vanguard, the New York Mecca of jazz, and at the DiMenna Center, supported by her faithful trio (pianist Aaron Diehl, bass player Paul Sikivie and drummer Lawrence Leathers) and some guests on a few tracks, such as Quatuor Catalyst and pianist Sullivan Fortner. A real choice for the artist, who wishes she could only record live albums, the context in which her band’s sound is most faithfully presented. More classic in its form than her two previous works, Dreams And Dagger is proof of her fluency no matter the repertoire. For a classic like My Man’s Gone Now, for which thousands of versions already exist, she embarks with her voice on unique paths, to astounding effect! Furthermore, Cecile McLorin Salvant fully bonds with her trio, which isn’t just a simple stooge for her amazing voice, but an essential part of her musical world. Once again, she blazes an even deeper trail, far from the Billie/Sarah/Ella Holy Trinity, because as Wynton Marsalis put it: “You only get a singer like this once in a generation or two…”. © MD/Qobuz

Love, Damini

Burna Boy

World - Released July 1, 2022 | Spaceship - Bad Habit - Atlantic Records

Hi-Res
Burna Boy has helped define today’s Afropop with his long list of acclaimed hits and featurings, so it’s no wonder that he’s enjoying global success. On Love, Damini, his fourth album, the Nigerian star continues doing what he does best. There are some incredible tracks on this release, such as Different Size, a duet with his compatriot Victony (whose over-produced vocals contrast with the very raw tracks that precede it), as well as the behemoth For My Hand with Ed Sheeran, and Rollercoaster (produced by the French beatmaker Skread and featuring the king of reggaeton, J Balvin). Love, Damini makes no secret of Burna Boy’s intentions to advance his way to the top of the charts, and his audacious efforts really shine. Science, Jagele and the fantastic single Kilometre prove that his music is a force to be reckoned with whilst still maintaining his signature effortless, suave sound. When he ventures into R&B territory—notably with Kehlani and Blxst on Solid—Burna Boy is at the top of his game. This album, which is definitely more innovative than his previous release, Twice As Tall, doesn’t play it safe. It’s wide-ranging with incredible depth and Burna Boy hasn’t held back when it comes to taking a few risks. It’s undoubtedly one of his best releases yet. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz

Sonic Soul Surfer

Seasick Steve

Blues - Released March 24, 2015 | There's A Dead Skunk Records

John Lee Hooker built a long, rich career out of writing the same song over and over again for close to 50 years. That's not to say Hooker wasn't a great songwriter, as he most certainly was, but for him the most important thing wasn't the melody or the lyrics, but the boogie, the ceaseless forward rhythm that drove his music with an unholy force and was the foundation of nearly all his great songs. Seasick Steve is no John Lee Hooker, but he does share Hooker's true devotion to the deep and sinewy groove, an element that's run strong through Steve's music since he belatedly launched his recording career in 2006, and his albums have been cut from similar musical cloth, with the Seasick One wailing hard on a buzzy slide guitar while his rhythm section stomps behind him like the beat owes them money. 2015's Sonic Soul Surfer doesn't break a lot of new ground for Seasick Steve (the artist formerly known as Steve Wold); it's dominated by butt-shaking groovers like "Roy's Gang," "Sonic Soul Boogie," and "Barracuda '68," where Steve cranks his amp and the band turns up the heat, while smoky late-night numbers like "We Be Moving" and "Your Name," and atmospheric acoustic tunes such as "In Peaceful Dreams" and "Heart Full of Scars" give the album variety and texture. When Steve hits fourth gear and picks up a good head of steam, his indefatigable stomp is a joy to behold, and he rocks blissfully hard for a man eligible for Social Security. However, Sonic Soul Surfer is an album that doesn't need to be 57-minutes long, and the final third features more than one moment where the record feels like it should coast to a close, only for another slow number to jump up and keep the show rolling. When Seasick Steve is laying out a fiery groove, Sonic Soul Surfer more than delivers the goods, but he should remember than John Lee Hooker didn't cut too many double albums in his day for a good reason -- you can only boogie for so long in one go, and when you run low on gas, it's not entertaining for anyone involved.© Mark Deming /TiVo
