Field : Nocturnes

Florent Albrecht

Solo Piano - Released September 17, 2021 | HORTUS

Hi-Res Booklet
“Unprecedented” is the right word to sum up this album entirely devoted to John Field's Nocturnes. Unprecedented because it is the first recording by Florent Albrecht, an extra-terrestrial of the pianoforte, who trained late in life after a first career in the luxury goods industry. After graduating from the Conservatoire of Geneva in 2018 and laureate of the Royaumont Foundation the same year, the French pianist has already performed at the Paris Opera and the Juilliard School, among others. An unprecedented album, as it features the world premiere of Nocturne in B flat major, posthumous Op.142, a score exhumed from the shelves of the St Petersburg library by Florent Albrecht. For the occasion, Qobuz presents this original and enchanting album exclusively for five weeks. The nocturne, a form made popular by Chopin, emerged at a time in the history of music when technical improvements in keyboard instruments enabled them to rival the expressiveness of the human voice. We do not know if it is John Field's writing talent or Florent Albrecht's fluid and airy playing—it is probably a subtle mixture of the two—but we come away from listening being convinced that the piano is the sole instrument capable of expressing the emotions of the romantic soul. The musician opts for a phrasing that is both clear and supple, perfectly suited to his instrument (a Carlo Meglio from 1826), whose rounded and slightly trembling timbre, sometimes close to a cimbalom, acts like a soothing balm for the soul. A truly calming interlude. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz

Fauré: Intégrale de l'œuvre pour piano, Vol. 1 (Ballade, Mazurka op.62, Quatre Valses-Caprices, Préludes Op.103

Jean-Claude Pennetier

Classical - Released May 12, 2009 | Mirare

Booklet
Though Fauré was assuredly his own man as a composer, in these performances of his piano music by Jean-Claude Pennetier, he is also surely the rightful heir of Chopin. The formal matter here is clearly Chopin's -- a ballade, a mazurka, four waltzes, and nine preludes -- and the stylistic manner is Chopin's as well -- the filigree and melody in the right hand and the left hand divided between counter-melody, chordal accompaniment and bass. This is meant as no slight to either Fauré or Pennetier. This is luscious music with toothsome melodies, succulent sonorities, and mouthwatering forms, and if these can be faulted for being too beautiful, it's a fault they should bear proudly. The performances are likewise exquisite. Pennetier has a fluent technique, a pearly tone, and an elegant way of phrasing a melody and shaping a form. But more than that, Pennetier has a real sympathy for Fauré's music and his interpretations are honest and heartfelt. Though the classic performances of these works are certainly worthy of admiration and love, Pennetier's are no less admirable and loveable and any listener interested in the composer or the period is urged to try this disc. Mirare's digital sound is clear, deep, and immediate. © TiVo

Bacchanale: Saint-Saëns et la Méditerranée

Orchestre Divertimento

Classical - Released March 24, 2023 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res
The Orchestre Divertimento and its conductor, Zahia Ziouani, often juxtapose European repertory with music from other parts of the world. Ziouani, who is of Algerian background, has a particular interest in the music of that country. She could not have found a composer whose works were more congenial to such a project than Camille Saint-Saëns, who visited Algeria no fewer than 18 times and composed a Suite algérienne, Op. 60, that is heard here, broken up and interspersed with Arabic music. What makes Ziouani's project unique is that there are not two types of music here but three. Many of the Saint-Saëns works are preceded by improvisations in the classical Arabic idiom, on oud, qanun, a traditional viol, derbouka, and the riqq drum. These are quite a musical distance from Saint-Saëns, but Ziouani introduces contemporary Arabic songs, of a semi-popular nature, as an intermediate step. The sets are mostly in related tonalities. This is an ingenious idea that sheds light on both Saint-Saëns, on what he heard when he heard Algerian music, and on the nature of contemporary popular traditions that are rooted in the classical music of the world. The Saint-Saëns performances themselves are entirely creditable, and the album is well recorded at a couple of different locations. A unique release that makes one want to hear more from this distinctive ensemble. © James Manheim /TiVo

Sibelius: Tapiola, En saga & Songs

Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra

Classical - Released October 13, 2017 | Ondine

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Gramophone Editor's Choice - 5 Sterne Fono Forum Klassik
The star artist on this Finnish release is mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, and the orchestrations of the eight Sibelius voice-and-piano songs here by Aulis Sallinen were done with her voice specifically in mind. You can sample one of these (perhaps Sippan, "The Anemone") to see how you like the idea: von Otter sounds terrific, and Sallinen accomplishes the feat of staying out of her way. The side effect is that the songs don't sound much like Sibelius in terms of the orchestra. There will be less doubt about the two orchestral tone poems at the beginning, with Hannu Lintu leading a crack Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The two works come from the end and the beginning, respectively, of Sibelius' career. Tapiola, Op. 112, from 1926, is given an extraordinary performance, with forest sounds etched clearly out of the moody orchestral background and little explosions of noise popping out startlingly. The early En Saga, Op. 9, perhaps the piece in which Sibelius' Finnish voice began to appear most clearly, likewise gets a powerful rendition of its blood-and-guts final pages. And there will be no doubt at all about Ondine's engineering work, accomplished at the Helsinki Music Centre and catching every orchestral detail. A recommended Sibelius disc/hard drive segment. © TiVo
