N'espérez plus mes yeux... Airs sérieux et à boire, Vol. 3

William Christie

Art Songs, Mélodies & Lieder - Released April 30, 2021 | harmonia mundi

Hi-Res Booklet
With this third volume of "Airs sérieux et à boire", the ensemble Les Arts Florissants return to this genre whose refinement had marked the French musical landscape for over a hundred years. By turns gallant, earthy, or spiritual, these vocal miniatures, prized at the French court, ushered in a ground-breaking style which opened the door to an endless variety of interpretations. "One can hardly find enough praise for the individuality of these inspired performers, for their skill to make the music animate the words ( . . . ) as they display a joyful unity of purpose. A unique event!" (Opéra Magazine). © harmonia mundi

Stabat Mater

Karl Jenkins

Classical - Released March 3, 2008 | Decca (UMO) (Classics)

Karl Jenkins' setting of the Stabat Mater includes several additional texts, in English, Latin, Greek, and Aramaic, including a poem by Rumi and newly written poetry, and the entire work lasts over an hour. The listener's response to this piece will depend on his or her appreciation of Jenkins' other works in a classical vein targeting a crossover audience. The Stabat Mater is recognizably "classical," using traditional chorus, orchestra, and soloist with conventional harmonic progressions, often related to Baroque practices, but the whole has a distinctly pop feeling, particularly in its heavy deployment of percussion. Jenkins also uses a number of non-western instruments (as well as an "ethnic" vocalist), and the influence of world music is never far away. Jenkins' aesthetic may lack sophistication or stylistic integrity, but the slick professionalism of his facile mix of genres can't be denied. The work receives a top-notch performance, with Jenkins leading the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus and the EMO Ensemble, playing and singing with passion and conviction. Mezzo-soprano Jurgita Adamonyte sings with warmth and deep expressiveness, and elevates the material through the dignity of her performance. The same could be said of vocalist Belinda Sykes, who brings a Middle Eastern sensibility to her solos. EMI's sound is clean, warm, and vibrant.© TiVo

Cantate Domino - La Cappella Sistina e la musica dei Papi

Sistine Chapel Choir

Classical - Released September 25, 2015 | Deutsche Grammophon (DG)

Hi-Res Booklet
Cantate Domino, a 2015 release on Deutsche Grammophon, is the first commercial studio recording of the Sistine Chapel Choir, led by Massimo Palombella, which has until now been heard only in live recordings of varying quality. The program is a mix of Gregorian chants and motets that have long been a part of the Sistine Chapel's liturgical music, including works by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Orlande de Lassus, Felice Anerio, Tomás Luis de Victoria, and perhaps most famously, Gregorio Allegri, whose Miserere was once exclusively performed by the choir. This recording features the original fauxbourdon version of the Miserere, found in the Sistine Codex of 1661, which differs from later arrangements and adaptations in its austere simplicity and lack of abbellimenti or ornamentation, such as the famous "top C" passage which many might expect. The sound of the antiphonally divided choir may seem lopsided in this recording, since the remote singers are rather soft and distant in the chapel's echoic acoustics, and the long reverberation time tends to blur their words, so following the enclosed text is helpful. © TiVo

Night Sessions

The Dowland Project

Classical - Released June 21, 2013 | ECM New Series

Hi-Res Booklet
Recorded in 2001 and 2008, Night Sessions is the fourth album of the Dowland Project on ECM, drawing on music of the late Medieval and Renaissance periods as raw source material for improvisation. Leader John Potter is joined by Stephen Stubbs, John Surman, Barry Guy, Maya Homburger, and Milos Valent, all experts on antique and modern instruments who create a mysterious dialog between the past and present by crossing boundaries of style and expression. Much of the music they have reworked is anonymous, derived from fragmentary pieces or ancient chants, though there are a few pieces by known composers, such as Joan Ambrosio Dalza, Bernart de Ventadorn, Solage, and Pierre Attaingnant, and their music is also subjected to the group's unpredictable adaptations. This album is not for early music purists or people who like to put their music in neat cubbyholes, because the blending of consort music with avant-garde jazz and experimental vocalizations does not allow for easy categorization. Yet the album works surprisingly well on its own terms, not only because of its compelling feeling of darkness and melancholy, but also because it provides many inventive transformations and surprises that keep the listener thinking. It may be called crossover music for the sake of convenience, but Night Sessions really is sui generis.© TiVo
