Water Bearer

Sally Oldfield

Folk/Americana - Released October 25, 2004 | Castle Communications

The sister of the TUBULAR BELLS composer Mike Oldfield, Sally Oldfield had contributed to many of her brother's recordings before releasing this solo debut in 1978. With her mellifluous vocals and a similar multi-instrumental ability to her brother, Oldfield spins a series of Tolkien-esque tales that set her firmly in the vanguard of 1970s prog rock.© TiVo

COPLAND: The Tender Land Suite / Piano Concerto / Old American Songs (arr. for chorus)

Elgin Symphony Orchestra

Choral Music (Choirs) - Released May 27, 2008 | Naxos

Booklet Distinctions 4 étoiles du Monde de la Musique
No matter how definitive some recordings of certain works may be, it is absolutely necessary for new recordings of those works to be added to the catalog in order for music to stay alive in the hearts and minds of listeners. In the case of this Naxos disc with Robert Hanson leading the Elgin Symphony Orchestra in works by American composer Aaron Copland, the definitive recordings come from the composer himself, who taped all the works included here either for RCA or Columbia. And though in every case Copland's own recordings are superior, this disc still ought to be heard by anyone who loves the music. Copland's recording of the orchestral suite from his opera The Tender Land with the Boston Symphony is both warmer and richer in tone than this one, but Hanson and the Illinois musicians clearly love the music and their affection shows in their big-hearted performance. Similarly, though Copland's recording of the Piano Concerto with the composer as soloist and Leonard Bernstein leading the New York Philharmonic is bolder and more rhythmically driven than this one, pianist Benjamin Pasternack is a powerful soloist who brings enough energy and virtuosity to the work to make it sound bright, shiny, and new, particularly in the closing Allegro assai. The final pair of works here are the two books of Old American Songs in the version for chorus, soloists, and orchestra; however, the earlier recordings with heroic baritone William Warfield and Copland leading the Columbia Symphony far outrank these with blustery baritone Nathaniel Stampley. Despite his manifest enthusiasm, Stampley adds nothing to these familiar pieces and the St. Charles Singers, though obviously a fine chorus, lack the weight and strength to make these straightforward songs succeed. Still, all these pieces need these performances if they are to continue to be part of the living repertoire, and as additions to the Copland catalog, Hanson, Pasternack, and the Elgin Symphony's performances will be welcome by fans of the American composer. Naxos' sound is clean and cool.© TiVo

Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé (Complete Ballet)

Sinfonia of London Chorus

Symphonies - Released November 3, 2023 | Chandos

Hi-Res Booklet
Although it hasn't been publicized as much as it should, the turn of conductor John Wilson and his Sinfonia of London toward concert repertory, as opposed to film music and crossover sounds, is one of the most welcome developments on the recording scene over the last decade. There could hardly be a better example than this recording of Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé in its complete version. Ravel buffs will be interested in this 2023 release because Wilson, during COVID-19 lockdowns, made a fresh edition of the work, basing it on original rehearsal markings. For general listeners, there is likely to be a sensation that something is different but that it is hard to pin down. It is not even enough to distract from the performance itself, which is superb. Daphnis et Chloé has been proposed as an instrumental counterpart to the piano work Gaspard de la nuit in terms of sheer technical difficulty. The textures are almost impossibly subtle. To gauge the depth of Wilson's accomplishment, sample the "Danse légère et gracieuse de Daphnis" from the first part, with its incredible wind filigree at the beginning. Wilson's control over the Sinfonia of London Chorus, here and elsewhere, is extraordinary; it seems to enter imperceptibly as a quiet wash but then to have been a critical part of the texture all along. This album made classical best-seller lists in the autumn of 2023, and it was being heard by far more people than simply Ravel enthusiasts.© James Manheim /TiVo

Charpentier & Desmarest: Te Deum

Ensemble Les Surprises

Classical - Released January 5, 2024 | Alpha Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Choc de Classica
The Te Deum was one of the major cultural emblems of the French court in the late 17th and early 18th centuries; in the apt phrasing of annotator Bénédicte Hertz on this 2024 Alpha release, it "exploited two key driving forces of kingly politics: glorification and fear." The splendid trumpet-and-drum sound has made the Charpentier Te Deum heard here into one of the enduring hits of the Baroque era; it even turned up as a theme song for the Eurovision Song Contest a few years back. Ensemble Les Surprises and its imposingly named director, Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas, deliver a strong version with crack playing; it can stand with any others among the many on the market, and Alpha backs up the performances with a spacious but never muddy acoustic at the Metz Arsenal that retains detail and doesn't let the fine soloists get lost. However, what really makes this release a standout is the presence of another Te Deum; Charpentier's is the only one that is commonly heard. The Te Deum "de Lyon" of Henry Desmarest here receives its world premiere. It was also written for the French court; the "de Lyon" moniker seems to come from the fact that a copy of the manuscript is housed there. The work is entirely satisfying. It is later than Charpentier's work and breaks up the Te Deum text differently, allowing more room for the Italianate arias that were beginning to creep into French music, but the imposing quality of the genre is not lost, and this makes for interesting tensions. Lovers of the French Baroque will find that the music here enriches their understanding of the court and its mighty musical apparatus, and really, this is pleasing music for anyone, even Eurovision fans. This release landed on classical best-seller charts in early 2024.© James Manheim /TiVo
