Good Night !

Bertrand Chamayou

Classical - Released October 9, 2020 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or
Pianist Bertrand Chamayou's Good Night! takes its title from one of the numbers of Leoš Janáček's From an Overgrown Path, which opens the program. It's appropriate, for the entire program consists of works capturing the moment when sleep comes. They go by the names of lullaby, berceuse, wiegenlied, and more, but they have are consistent in tone, and listeners in search of an album with which to unwind and even to fall asleep to will be satisfied here. The program is very artfully constructed so as to deepen the mood with each piece. (That is, until Helmut Lachenmann's Wiegenmusik, a modernist work that may wake one right up again.) There are some familiar examples of the genre from Liszt, Brahms (the "Brahms Lullaby," in an arrangement by Max Reger), and Chopin, but also lesser-known works by Sergei Lyapunov, the worth-knowing female composer Mel Bonis, and Bryce Dessner, whose entrancing Song for Octave confirms that he has moved definitively beyond being included on programs simply to draw in rock music fans. However, it's Chamayou's playing that ties the whole thing together; he keeps the music at a low but constant intensity and has remarkable control throughout. This is an ideal gift for those with a new baby, or really for anyone else.© TiVo

Sviatoslav Richter plays Liszt & Chopin

Sviatoslav Richter

Classical - Released August 17, 2018 | Profil

Booklet
Here is a new touchstone piece in the discography of the great Soviet pianist, after several albums already released by the same label. Recorded in concert in Moscow, Leningrad (now St Petersburg) and London between 1948 and 1963, this new, important corpus of recordings contains 29 never-before-heard pieces of the hundred-odd pieces presented here. Just two composers, Liszt and Chopin, received invitations to this musical party, with several works in several versions, the fruit of numerous recordings. Not a single crumb is neglected: this is an opportunity to enjoy the thousand and one facets that set apart an exceptional musical talent with all the fantasies and variations that one would expect of a great pianist. First of all, we have two different versions of two concertos (with Kondrashin and Ančerl), the Années de pèlerinage, and a selection of Études including the mind-bending Feux follets. Next up, a substantial selection of fourteen Études, the four Ballads, the Barcarolle and compilations of Waltzes, Nocturnes, Mazurkas, Polonaises and Scherzos which provides an overview of this artist with a volcanic temperament, often lofty, and inspired by a great breath of romanticism. As a bonus, we have the complex 2e Sonata by Szymanowski, a composer for whom Sviatoslav Richter spent his life as a prominent advocate, most of all here in this monumental sonata, which he brought to his many audiences over fifty years. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Chopin: Ballades & Berceuse & Barcarolle & Scherzo No. 4

Evgeny Kissin

Classical - Released March 1, 1999 | RCA Red Seal

Evgeny Kissin has been accused of being a bland interpreter in recent years. True, his Prokofiev First and Third (DG) was guilty of a rather smooth perfectionism, the kind of deft pianism you admire--while you're reading the paper. But at least his last two releases on RCA, this Chopin disc and a brilliant Schumann one earlier this year, are anything but bland. Here, Kissin plays Chopin with dynamics and accenting more than vaguely reminiscent of Horowitz at his best. He displays far better control, in fact, of forte markings and of rubato than the often self-possessed Horowitz usually did.The Four Ballades have drawn the attention of so many great pianists in so many truly great performances; it's difficult to compile a list of favorites: Rubinstein (RCA), Ashkenazy (London), and Zimerman (DG) are just a few. Kissin's account must now be ranked among the best. In fact, if I had to select one set of the four Ballades, it would be this one. His renditions of the First and Third are hands-down winners. Where Zimerman can be so moving yet so frustrating in his sometimes quirky interpretive mannerisms (try the Third Ballade, beginning at 4:40, where he plays the climactic emotional outpouring with a curiously deadening softness at the outset), Kissin doesn't disappoint, owing to his innate sense for drama and flow, and to his intelligent phrasing. In fact, he not only never misses the interpretive boat in these four works, but rarely is he ever less than utterly convincing throughout. His tempos, for instance, always seem so right, so perfect, yet without ever sounding middle-of-the-road, and nothing in any performance ever even hints at the neutralizing air of calculation or nonchalance. In the other pieces here, Kissin displays the same high artistry: the Barcarolle brims with passion and beauty, the Scherzo effervesces with wit and grace, and the Berceuse charms and mesmerizes in its delicacies. Of course, dozens of pianists have traveled these highways as well, but Kissin's versions are distinguished and competitive with the best. RCA provides excellent sound. This is a classic recital disc!© TiVo
